Paperbark is an Australian point-and-click exploration video game by Paper House, released June 2018. [1] [2]
The game was originally created as the final year project of RMIT game design students Ryan Boulton (programmer), Nina Bennett (artist) and Terry Burdak, who founded the indie development studio Paper House. [3] [4] They wanted the game to look like a storybook, and used Boulton's work as he had already been developing watercolour-inspired rendering techniques. [3] Burdak suggested the inspiration of children's books. [3] The trio grew up in regional Victoria, and aimed to make a game that looked like the places they knew. [4] The watercolour art style is reminiscent of nature-centric Australian children's books like Blinky Bill , Diary of a Wombat and Possum Magic. [4] Reflecting on their time at RMIT, Burdak explained: "“It has a supportive community, which allowed us to experiment and create a game that explores our personal ideas about Australia and story-telling in a digital format." [5]
After graduating from university, they showed an early prototype to different gaming conferences, and discovered the government organization Film Victoria, which offers funding to game development, among other creative projects. [3] After securing a Film Victoria grant in 2015, the team could quit their day jobs, form a company, and devote their time to finishing the game. [3] They brought on various freelancers, including an ecologist who checked if the various plants and animals were native to the bush. The team also hired a children's book author (whose identity is currently kept secret) in order to elevate the narrative elements of the game. [3]
The plot centres around a sleepy wombat exploring Australian bushland, encountering various flora and fauna along the way.
Players tap the screen to move the character, and as they do more pieces of the path are made visible. According to Gamasutra, "information unfolds on screen in curt but elegantly simple sentences". [6]
Mashable felt the game offers a "more detailed representation of the Australian bush than we've seen in other games", comparing it to Forza Horizon 3 which showcased the deserts, rainforests and coastlines that are more commonly portrayed. [4] Finder deemed its art style as both "striking" and "impressive". [7] The ABC noted that while Australian developers have often struggled to create games that are "quintessentially Australian", Paperbark offers an exception to the rule. [8] Pixel Pop Network likened the game's storytelling through visuals to children's books like Animalia, Bamboozled, and Where's Wally. [9] Kotaku singled out the game when discussing a video game project that is unconcerned with money, instead having a sole goal to present honest representation of an Australian landscape. [10] Speaking of the game's educational potential, Gamasutra suggested its application as a teaching aid in a kindergarten or early primary school biology class. [6]
The game was a student entrant in the 2016 Independent Games Festival. [11] Paperbark won the award for "Best Open-Genre Game" at Intel Level Up 2017. [12] It was also nominated for "Australian Developed Game of the Year" at the Australian Games Awards 2018. [13]

An escape room video game, also known as escape the room, room escape, or escape game, is a subgenre of point-and-click adventure game which requires a player to escape from imprisonment by exploiting their surroundings. The room usually consists of a locked door, objects to manipulate, and hidden clues or secret compartments. The player must use the objects to interact with other items in the room to reveal a way to escape. Escape the room games were born out of freeware browser games created in Adobe Flash, but have since become most popular as mobile games for iOS and Android. Some examples include Crimson Room, Viridian Room, MOTAS, and Droom. The popularity of these online games has led to the development of real-life escape rooms all around the world.

2K Australia Pty Ltd was an Australian video game developer based in Canberra. The company was founded as Irrational Games Australia, a subsidiary of Irrational Games, in April 2000. Irrational Games Australia and its parent were acquired by Take-Two Interactive in January 2006, with Irrational Games being placed under the 2K label. The two Irrational Games studio were split apart in August 2007, wherefore Irrational Games Australia became 2K Australia. Furthermore, 2K Australia operated under the name of sister studio 2K Marin between April 2010 and November 2011, and was finally shut down in April 2015.
"The cake is a lie" is a catchphrase from the 2007 video game Portal. Initially left behind as graffiti by Doug Rattman to warn that GLaDOS, the game's main villain, was deceiving the player, it was intended to be a minor reference and esoteric joke by the game's development team that implied the player would never receive their promised reward. It became unexpectedly popular among Portal players, and has since become a widely distributed Internet meme where the phrase is co-opted and becomes associated with new meanings outside of the original context of the game.
2K Marin, Inc. was an American video game developer based in Novato, California. Founded in December 2007 as a spin-off from their parent, 2K, the company developed BioShock 2 (2010) and The Bureau: XCOM Declassified (2013) before laying off or relocating all staff in October 2013 and silently being closed.
The Maw is an action-adventure video game developed by Twisted Pixel Games and released for Xbox 360 and Microsoft Windows. The game centers on the extraterrestrial Frank and a purple, amorphous creature called The Maw, who have crash-landed their spacecraft on an alien planet. The player assumes the role of Frank and directs The Maw—which can take on the abilities of objects and fauna it consumes—via a leash.

Twisted Pixel Games, LLC is an American video game developer based in Austin, Texas. Originally a contractor, Twisted Pixel releases games based on its own intellectual properties such as The Maw and 'Splosion Man. The company uses its own proprietary engine, known as Beard, to power its games. On October 12, 2011, it was announced that Twisted Pixel had become part of Microsoft Studios. However, Twisted Pixel separated from Microsoft, and became an independent company again on September 30, 2015. In November 2021, the company became a subsidiary of Oculus Studios.
Isometric video game graphics are graphics employed in video games and pixel art that use a parallel projection, but which angle the viewpoint to reveal facets of the environment that would otherwise not be visible from a top-down perspective or side view, thereby producing a three-dimensional (3D) effect. Despite the name, isometric computer graphics are not necessarily truly isometric—i.e., the x, y, and z axes are not necessarily oriented 120° to each other. Instead, a variety of angles are used, with dimetric projection and a 2:1 pixel ratio being the most common.
