Doug Gillard American rock guitarist

Doug Gillard is an American guitarist and songwriter. He has been a member of major indie pop and punk bands, most notably Guided by Voices, Nada Surf, Death of Samantha and Cobra Verde.

Indie pop is a music genre and subculture that combines guitar pop with DIY ethic in opposition to the style and tone of mainstream pop music. It originated from British post-punk in the late 1970s and subsequently generated a thriving fanzine, label, and club and gig circuit. Compared to its counterpart, indie rock, the genre is more melodic, less abrasive, and relatively angst-free. In later years, the definition of indie pop has bifurcated to also mean bands from unrelated DIY scenes/movements with pop leanings. Subgenres include chamber pop and twee pop.

Guided by Voices band

Guided by Voices (GBV) is an American indie rock band formed in 1983 in Dayton, Ohio. It has made frequent personnel changes but always maintained the presence of principal songwriter Robert Pollard, who founded the group with guitarists Mitch Mitchell, Tobin Sprout, Jim Pollard, and drummer Kevin Fennell. The "classic" lineup included these musicians along with bassist Greg Demos, who also has some song co-writing credits.

Background

Gillard is a New York City-based guitarist and songwriter, originally from Ohio. He has been a member of numerous indie pop and punk bands, most notably including Guided by Voices, Nada Surf, Death of Samantha, Bambi Kino, Cobra Verde, and Gem. [2]

Nada Surf band

Nada Surf is an American alternative rock band which currently consists of Matthew Caws, Ira Elliot (drums), Doug Gillard (guitar) and Daniel Lorca. Based in New York City and formed in the 1990s, Nada Surf continues to tour. Their eighth album, You Know Who You Are, was a featured release on NPR in February 2016.

Death of Samantha

Death of Samantha is an underground post-punk band from Cleveland, Ohio. Founded in 1983, the quartet made its infamous debut at a Ground Round family restaurant in Parma Heights, Ohio, a show that became part of rock legend and set the tenor for the band's live stage show. Death of Samantha played a farewell show on December 15, 1990, but later reformed on December 23, 2012 with its original four-piece lineup: vocalist/guitarist John Petkovic (vocals/guitar), lead guitarist Doug Gillard, bassist David James and drummer Steven "Steve-O" Eierdam.

Bambi Kino is a band formed in 2009 by four members of notable American indie rock groups, including Doug Gillard and Ira Elliot, to play music of the early 1960s for a celebration of the fiftieth anniversary of the first Beatles concerts in Hamburg, Germany. The group debuted in Hamburg in 2010 and continues to perform.

The 2014 album is Gillard's third full-length solo release. [2] Assessing his limited name recognition as a solo artist, the music magazine Blurt quoted Death of Samantha's John Petkovic: "Doug deserves more attention, no doubt. But it's a larger thing — people are able to evaluate the name on the painting more than the painting. Doug has always been pretty dedicated to the painting, and that's a good thing." [4] Petkovic praised Gillard as one "who comes at music and art through imagination ... attracted to sounds and parts. As a result, he's able to synthesize disparate pieces that other people wouldn't imagine fitting together until they saw the completed puzzle." [4]

The magazine was originally known as Harp Magazine for over 10 years, also based in Silver Spring, and was considered one of the best music magazines of the decade in the early 2000s. After Harp folded in March 2008, Blurt was founded by Harp owner Scott Crawford. Some of the main writers and editors for Harp also started Blurt with Crawford, including managing editor Fred Mills, senior editor Randy Harward, and senior editor Andy Tennille.

Critical reception

Blurt wrote that Parade On blends hooks with layers of guitars in a display of diverse examples of "steady, riff-based rock," [4] and the British music magazine Bearded wrote that Gillard's "cup brims over with subtle gems," making Parade On a record "worthy of its own ecstatic praise." [3]

Bearded is a British bi-monthly music magazine, covering the independent music industry, reviewing artists who are either unsigned or signed to independent record labels.

AllMusic's Mark Deming called Parade On an eclectic and superbly crafted album of "guitar-fueled rock & roll with an extra portion of pop hooks" and lyrics in "various degrees of bittersweet snark." [1] Deming praised Gillard as a gifted songwriter, guitarist, producer, and arranger, whose multi-instrumental performances included layers of strong lead and rhythm guitar work melding with "tough yet flexible" bass, in the service of songs ranging from "sparkly jangle" to "sweet but aggressive" hard-rocking power pop.
