Parva is a 2002 Indian Kannada-language musical drama film directed and written by Sunil Kumar Desai and produced by H. C. Srinivas. The film stars Vishnuvardhan [1] along with Prema, Roja and Yakshagana exponent 'Keremane' Shambhu Hegde in prominent roles. [2] The music was written, scored and produced by Hamsalekha.

The film released on 18 January 2002 to generally positive reviews from critics.

Plot

This is one of the rare movies in Kannada cinema history. The movie starts with a song and also ends with a song and dance. This is probably the first time in Kannada cinema where the director uses a song to complete the climax for the movie.

Sagar (Vishnuvardhan) is a good singer and dancer. He starts searching for Suma (Prema) in a huge crowd. When the crowd starts wondering why is he looking for her commences the first flashback, which is one among the seven or so flashbacks in the movie.

Sagar is a nice guy who has taken up drinking due to failure in his love life. Suma lands at Sagar's place to learn bharathanatyam from his father, who is an expert. She tries to find out why Sagar has stopped singing. This leads to another flashback where Sagar explains as to how he was ditched by Sudha (Roja) and also narrates how he lost his mother. This forced him to stop singing and take up drinking. Sagar finally takes up singing after much persuasion from Suma and returns to the singing family. He also agrees to give a comeback show, but insists on Suma's presence in that show. Suma never turns up for the show. Here begins the search for her. He sets a deadline through a TV performance to Suma.

Suma turns up to Sagar's place and this leads to another flashback where she narrates as to why she couldn't attend the performance a year back. Bhattacharya is a very good singer. He and Suma's father (Dattatreya) have an argument because Bhattacharya's father insisted on his daughter winning the competition and forces him to go for a particular raga. This irritates Suma's father and he leaves the huge hall in a rage. He meets with an accident and dies. Bhattacharya insists on Suma not attending Sagar's performance as that will harm the growth of his daughter's image and that's the reason Suma doesn't turn up to Sagar's show (all this was a flashback). The rest of the movie is about the clash between Sagar and Bhattacharya. This leads to the climax song which is of 11–13 minutes duration and how he defeats Bhattacharya in a competition. [3]

Soundtrack

The music of the film was composed and the lyrics written by Hamsalekha. [4] It was earlier rumored that singer Lata Mangeshkar would sing a song in the film. However, it turned out to be a mere gossip. [5] The Music Magazine wrote "Compared to Sandhyaraga, Hamsageete or even Upasane, the songs here do not make a huge impression. Hamsalekha is best at wit and street language, and while Parva has some intersting patches, a classical dance and music-oriented film like this perhaps calls for a different set of skills". [6]

Reception

Indiainfo wrote "Sunil Kumar Desai has put his best efforts but fails, as the story is the same tried and tested formula. A musical movie, which lacks melody throughout. A neat performance by Vishnuvardhan. Diligent efforts by Prema and Roja. Full scores to Kare mane Shambhu Hegde for his excellent performance. Technically speaking Parva is a good film. Venu's photography is also one plus point of the film". [7] Sify wrote "Parva is a non-stop dance party, which becomes tedious and boring. Director Sunilkumar Desai, had made action thrillers in the past but following the success of his love story Nammoora Mandara Hoove he has now changed track to love stories. But Desai fails in his attempt to portray various dimensions of love. He ends up borrowing bits and shards of films like Hum Kissise Kum Nahi, Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam, Taal and other Bollywood musicals". [8]

A remake of the 1993 Hindi film Baazigar, it shocked its Karnataka audience with an unexpected violation of the standard Kannada film industry formula, with a morally ambiguous hero. An above-average success at the box office, this was Upendra's second film portraying a negative role after his earlier blockbuster Preethse, a remake of the 1993 Hindi film Darr. In both remakes, Upendra played Shah Rukh Khan's roles. It was Jyothika's debut in Kannada film industry. For his work in the film, Upendra won the Udaya Film Award for Best Male Actor along with Jyothika for her Best Female Actor Award.

Marma (transl. Secret) is a 2002 Indian Kannada-language psychological thriller film directed by Sunil Kumar Desai. It stars Prema and Anand in the lead roles. Hiriannaiah, Kishori Ballal, Arun Sagar, Yashwant Sardeshpande feature in supporting roles. The film presents the story of a woman who suffers from a split personality and post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Desai had revealed that the plot of the movie had been culled out from an English novel which he had read years before he conceptualized the film - from a short story he had read in 1982.

Nammoora Mandara Hoove is a 1996 Indian Kannada-language film directed by Sunil Kumar Desai starring Shiva Rajkumar, Ramesh Aravind and Prema in lead roles. It's considered one of the all-time blockbuster romantic movies in Kannada Film Industry. The film received two awards at the 1996–97, Karnataka State Film Awards including Best Child Actor – Male for Master Vinayak Joshi and Best Female Playback Singer for K. S. Chithra.

Sri Idagunji Mahaganapati Yakshagana Mandali, Keremane (R)(Kannada: ಇಡಗುಂಜಿ ಮಹಾಗಣಪತಿ ಯಕ್ಷಗಾನ ಮಂಡಳಿ)or simply the Keremane Yakshagana Troupe is a Yakshagana troupe based in the Uttara Kannada district of Karnataka, India. It was started by Keremane Shivarama Hegde in 1934. He is an exponent of this art form and is the first Yakshagana artist to win the Rashtrapati Award, an award handed out by the President of India to people who excel in various fields. The troupe has survived three generations, with his children Shambu Hegde, Mahabala Hegde and Gajanana Hegde and his grand son Shivananda Hegde also being exponents of Yakshagana. Keremane Shivananda Hegde is the current director of the troupe and the institution.

Amulya is a former Indian actress who appears in Kannada films. She made her debut as a child artist in the early 2000s and appeared in a lead role in 2007 with Cheluvina Chittara. She is best known for her roles in the commercially successful films Chaitrada Chandrama (2008), Naanu Nanna Kanasu (2010) and Shravani Subramanya (2013).

J Anoop Seelin is an Indian film music director and playback singer who works in the Kannada film industry. He has scored music for films including Gooli, Eddelu Manjunatha, I Am Sorry Mathe Banni Preethsona,Sidlingu, Parari, Madarangi, Naanu Avanalla...Avalu and Aatagara. He won the Karnataka State Film Award for Best Music Director for his Sidlingu work.

The film features an ensemble cast of Anant Nag, Bharathi Vishnuvardhan, Sudharani, Prakash Raj, Bhavana, Anu Prabhakar and Sunil Raoh. It was produced by "Indo - Hollywood" films, consisting of five producers, namely Mano Murthy, Ram Prasad, Dr. Renuka and Somashekar. The music was composed by Mano Murthy.

Habba (transl. Festival) is a 1999 Indian Kannada-language drama film written and directed by D. Rajendra Babu. The film has an ensemble cast including Vishnuvardhan, Ambareesh, Devaraj, Jayapradha, Urvashi, Shashikumar, Ramkumar, Vijayalakshmi, Kasthuri and Charulatha. The movie was produced by Bharathi Devi for Chinni Chitra productions. The movie became a blockbuster and ran for more than 25 weeks. The film was remade in Telugu in 2002 as Chandravamsam starring Krishna. The movie was loosely based on the Pandavas's exile episode in the Virata Parva of Mahabharata.

L. N. Shastri was an Indian playback singer and music composer who primarily worked in Kannada cinema. Starting his career as a playback singer in the film Ajagajantara (1991), Shastri went on to sing for more than 3000 songs. Upon his friends' suggestion, he renamed himself as Chaitanya and composed music for over 25 films starting with Kanasalu Neene Manasalu Neene (1998). However, he dropped the name due to the identity crisis for the film Bellary Naga (2009).
