Sunil Kumar Desai is an Indian film director, writer and producer, known for his work in Kannada cinema. In most of his films, Desai blends art and commercial cinema. He has written and directed Thrillers and Romance films. He has won the Karnataka State Film Awards (4 times) in the Best Screenplay & Best Dialogues categories. He has also won the Filmfare awards 4 times. Desai worked with South Indian musicians like Illayaraja, Hamsalekha and Gunasingh.

Early life

Desai was born in 1955 in Bijapur, Karnataka. He had his primary education in Bijapur and higher education in Pune. He started his film-career as an assistant to Kashinath, and later Suresh Heblikar.

Career

Desai made film debut as a director with Tarka in 1989. [1] He subsequent films Nishkarsha , Beladingala Baale and Nammoora Mandara Hoove earned him a reputation as the most innovative and influential directors of the 1990s. [2] After three years of absence, Desai had announced that he have four films up his sleeve one of which is due at the end of 2019. [3]

Beladingala Baale is a 1995 Kannada romantic movie directed by Sunil Kumar Desai, starring Anant Nag and Suman Nagarkar. It is based on a Telugu novel titled Vennello Adapilla by Yandamoori Veerendranath which was translated into Kannada by Vamshi titled Beladingala Baale which was also serialised in Sudha, a Kannada weekly magazine. The Kannada and Telugu titles loosely translate to "lady in the moonlight". Vamshi, who translated the novel into Kannada, wrote dialogues for the movie or rather dialogues from the novel are adapted in the film without any modifications. The story revolves around Revanth, a chess grandmaster who is set to find out the identity of his fan, who calls him often and whom he refers to as "Beladingala Baale". Beladingala Baale gives Revanth the clues to find her out. How Revanth accomplishes his task forms the gist of the movie.

Utkarsha is a 1990 Indian Kannada psychological crime thriller film by Sunil Kumar Desai, starring Devraj, Ambareesh and Vanitha Vasu in the lead roles. The film was the second directorial venture of Sunil Kumar Desai after the 1989 film Tarka retaining much of the cast especially Devaraj and Vanitha Vasu. Just like Tarka, Utkarsha didn't have any songs and had a thriller theme. The background music of the film was scored by Guna Singh. The film received critical appraisal for Devaraj's portrayal of the psychopathic Rajesh.

J Anoop Seelin is an Indian film music director and playback singer who works in the Kannada film industry. Anubhava (transl. Experience) is a 1984 Indian Kannada-language drama film starring Kashinath, Abhinaya and Umashree. Actresses Abhinaya and Umashree made their debut with this film. The film is directed, co-produced and written by Kashinath and produced under Sri Gayatri Productions banner. It was remade in Hindi twice - first in 1986 as Anubhav starring Shekhar Suman, Richa Sharma and Padmini Kolhapure directed by Kashinath himself and second as Chadti Jawaani. The film was dubbed in Malayalam as Aadhyate Anubhavam and in Telugu as Anubhavam. Sunil Kumar Desai worked as an assistant to Kashinath on this movie.

<i>Taj Mahal</i> (2008 film) 2008 Indian film

Taj Mahal is a 2008 Indian Kannada-language romantic drama film directed and written by R. Chandru and starring Ajay Rao and Pooja Gandhi. Produced by T. Shivashankar Reddy, the film is Chandru's directoral debut. The film opened on 25 July 2008, and had a 200-day run in Karanataka. Music director Abhiman Roy was awarded the Best Music Director accolade at the Karnataka State Film Awards for his film score. Taj Mahal was one of the most successful Kannada-language films of 2008. It was remade in Telugu under the same title - Taj Mahal in 2010.

Nagappa Sunil Kumar, known professionally as Darling Krishna, is an Indian actor who primarily works in Kannada films. Krishna made his film debut with Jackie (2010). For his performance in the 2013 film Madarangi, he received SIIMA Award for Best Male Debut – Kannada nomination.

Udgharsha is a 2019 Kannada language action thriller film, written and directed by Sunil Kumar Desai. The film was also dubbed in Telugu and Malayalam with the same title and in Tamil language as Uchakattam. The film is produced by Devaraj under the banner D Creations and is touted to be a suspense thriller. The film features a multi-lingual ensemble cast of Thakur Anoop Singh, Sai Dhansika, Harsihka Poonacha, Kishore, Dr Kingmoohan, Tanya Hope, Kabir Duhan Singh, Prabhakar, and Shraddha Das in the lead roles.
