Patty Rivard Schachtner (born April 1,1960) is an American Democratic politician and first responder from Somerset,Wisconsin. She was a member of the Wisconsin Senate,representing Wisconsin's 10th Senate district from 2018 until 2021.
Schachtner was born in Somerset,Wisconsin,in April 1960. During her childhood she was raised on a family farm and attended Somerset High School,graduating in 1978. After attending Somerset,she went on to attend Wisconsin Indianhead Technical College (WITC,now Northwood Technical College) to become a first responder,working as an EMT and EMS adult educator. [1] She also served as a member of the Somerset School Board,Star Prairie,Wisconsin,town supervisor,and as an EMT educator at WITC. [2]
In 2017,after accepting a position within the Scott Walker administration,Sheila Harsdorf resigned her seat in the Wisconsin Senate to become Wisconsin's Secretary of Agriculture. Due to the opening,Schachtner and two other Democrats filed to succeed her,with Schachtner defeating John Calabrese by a 46 point margin. Going into the general election she was considered an underdog,but on January 16,2018,she defeated Republican nominee Adam M. Jarchow,a state legislator,by a large margin,in a district that Donald Trump had won in 2016 by over 17 points in an election mired by very low turnout. [3] She became the first Democrat to represent the 10th district since Alice Clausing left office in 2001.
Alongside her service as state senator,Schachtner also serves on various local boards and organizations within Somerset and engages in advocacy for victims of sexual and domestic violence.
In the 2020 election,Schachtner lost her bid for election to a full term to representative Rob Stafsholt by a twenty-point margin. [4]
After her defeat,Schachtner served as one of Wisconsin's 10 electors in the Electoral College,voting for Democratic Joe Biden. [5]
In 2022,Schachtner ran for the 28th Assembly district against Gae Magnafici.

She previously served ten years in the Wisconsin State Assembly and 17 years in the State Senate. Her brother,James Harsdorf,also served in the state Legislature,and was also secretary of the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture,Trade and Consumer Protection.

A special election was held to fill the remainder of the term in the United States House of Representatives for Wisconsin's 7th congressional district in the 116th United States Congress. Sean Duffy,the incumbent representative,announced his resignation effective September 23,2019,as his wife was about to give birth to a child with a heart condition. Governor Tony Evers chose January 27,2020,as the date for the special election,with the primaries scheduled for December 30,2019. However,the Department of Justice said that this schedule would be in violation of federal law,since it would provide insufficient time for overseas and military voters to receive ballots. Evers then rescheduled the primaries for February 18,2020,and the general election for May 12,2020.

The 2022 Wisconsin Senate elections were held on Tuesday,November 8,2022. 17 of the 33 seats in the Wisconsin State Senate were up for election—the odd-numbered districts. This was the first election to take place after redistricting following the 2020 United States census. This was the only election to take place under the redistricting plan set out in 2022. Before the election,21 Senate seats were held by Republicans,and 12 seats were held by Democrats. 11 Republican seats and six Democratic seats were up in this election. The primary election took place on August 9,2022.
The 2024 Wisconsin State Assembly election was held on Tuesday,November 5,2024. All 99 seats in the Wisconsin State Assembly were up for election. Prior to the election 64 Assembly seats were held by Republicans,34 seats were held by Democrats,with one seat,formerly held by a Democrat,vacant. In part due to new state legislative districts,Democrats gained 10 seats.
