Paul Gregory (born October 26, 1952) is an American lighting designer. He is the president and founder of Focus Lighting, a New York City-based architectural lighting design firm. [1]

Career

Gregory designed lighting for shows at regional theaters such as The Alley Theater in Houston, Texas and Stage West in Massachusetts. He was trained in theatrical lighting at the Goodman Theater School, part of the Art Institute of Chicago, and received an MFA from the Parsons School of Design. [2]

In 1975 Gregory, along with his partner Rick Spaulding, founded Litelab Corp in Buffalo, New York. Litelab specialized in nightclub design and eventually grew to have offices in New York, Chicago, Boston, Los Angeles, and a factory in Buffalo. Gregory left Litelab in 1985 and founded Focus Lighting. [3]

Since its establishment in 1987, Focus Lighting has garnered numerous awards for architectural lighting design. [1] Gregory's lighting designs earned him an induction into Architectural Lighting Magazine's Hall of Fame and Lighting Designer of the Year award. [4]

Speirs Major is a UK lighting design practice founded by Jonathan Speirs (1958-2012) and Mark Major in 1993. The practice is noted for its illumination of many prominent buildings, including Barajas International Airport, 30 St Mary Axe, the Millennium Dome and the interior of St. Pauls Cathedral. Hervé Descottes is a French lighting designer, business owner and author. He established the lighting design firm L'Observatoire International in New York City in 1993 after eight years of design practice in Paris, France. Descottes personally creates the lighting concepts for all projects designed by L'Observatoire International, and oversees project development through project completion. He is the author of Ultimate Lighting Design and co-authored Architectural Lighting, Designing with Light and Space with Cecilia E. Ramos. Mr. Descottes has been recognized numerous times by the lighting design and architectural community. GBH (Gregory Bonner Hale) is a London-based design and advertising agency founded in 1999 by Jason Gregory, Mark Bonner and Peter Hale. Studio V Architecture, styled as STUDIO V Architecture, founded in 2006, is a New York City-based architecture and planning firm led by Jay Valgora. The firm executes projects across New York and throughout the tri-state region. Studio V has been highlighted for its adaptive reuse design of important New York City sites, including the $400 million renovation of Macy's Herald Square, named by Architectural Record the largest retail project in North America in 2012 and 2013, and the Empire Stores on the Brooklyn waterfront.

Live Design is a monthly digital trade magazine, owned by Questex, that covers the latest projects and gear in live entertainment, including theatre, film, concerts, opera, ballet, architainment, and more. Columbia College Chicago's Theatre Department cites it for providing "comprehensive coverage for professionals in the fields of lighting, sound, staging, and projection." It originated as Lighting Dimensions, which combined with Theatre Crafts and Entertainment Design (1999-2005). Until December 2013, it was a print magazine, but has since converted to a free app with monthly issues for Apple and Android devices. Live Design is geared towards aspiring and established designers in the disciplines of lighting, audio, projection, and scenery. The magazine also manages its own website. Live Design is affiliated with the LDI trade show, and hosts the Live Design Master Classes and Envision Symposium. In his undergraduate textbook on stage management, Lawrence Stern recommends subscribing to the magazine and attending LDI as way for professional stage managers to keep current on theater technology. Live Design also presents awards and scholarships to younger designers, including the Pat MacKay Diversity In Design Scholarships for undergraduates and the Rising Star Award to early career professional designers.
