Major General Paul Bruce Symon, AO (born 1960) is a retired senior Australian Army officer and public servant. He served as Deputy Chief of Army from 2009 to 2011,Director of the Defence Intelligence Organisation from 2011 to 2014 and, [1] following his retirement from the army,was Director-General of the Australian Secret Intelligence Service from 18 December 2017 to 20 February 2023. Symon was educated at Scotch College,Melbourne, [4] and entered the Royal Military College,Duntroon,as an Australian Army officer cadet in 1979,and was allotted to Kokoda Company. In his final year at Duntroon in 1982 he was the senior cadet –Battalion Sergeant Major –and graduated as the recipient of the Sword of Honour. Symon was allotted to the Royal Regiment of Australian Artillery (RAA) and over his career saw service with the gunners in many postings,culminating in command of the 1st Field Regiment,Royal Australian Artillery in 1998 to 1999.
Symon served on four operational deployments. His most important joint command was in late 2005 until mid-2006 when appointed Commander Middle East (Joint Task Force 633). This appointment gave him national command responsibility for all Australian soldiers,sailors and airmen/women in Iraq and Afghanistan. His command coincided with Australia's only death in Iraq,that of Private Jake Kovco.
Symon advised the United Nations Special Representative in East Timor in the four months prior to the deployment of International Force for East Timor,known as INTERFET. This entailed close liaison with the Indonesian military,Falintil and militia leaders prior to,during,and after the vote for independence in 1999. For his leadership in East Timor and in command,he was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia in the 2000 Birthday Honours. [5]
In 1997 he served with the United Nations Truce Supervision Organization in a period of great tension between Hezbollah and the Israeli Defence Force. And in 2003,he was appointed as the senior military adviser for the Regional Assistance Mission to Solomon Islands It was in this period that a significant number of militia leaders were jailed and a very successful gun amnesty organised.
Symon has taught at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst in the UK,and has served as Army's Director-General of Personnel,Director-General of Preparedness and Plans and Deputy Chief of Army. He has also served as Director-General Pacific in International Policy Division and Chief of Staff of Army's 1st Division in Brisbane.
Academically,Symon holds two Master's degrees:from Deakin University and from the University of New South Wales. He is a graduate of Australian Command and Staff College and of the Centre for Defence and Strategic Studies in Canberra.
Symon was appointed an Officer of the Order of Australia in the 2007 Australia Day Honours in recognition of his operational service in the Middle East. [6]
Symon is married to Kate and they have two children. He enjoys running half marathons and sharing the company of his family and friends.

Lieutenant General John Murray Sanderson,is a retired senior Australian Army officer and vice-regal representative. He served as Force Commander of the United Nations Transitional Authority in Cambodia from 1992 to 1993,Chief of Army from 1995 to 1998,and was the 29th Governor of Western Australia from 2000 to 2005.

Major General Timothy Joseph McOwan,is a retired senior officer of the Australian Army. He served as Special Operations Commander Australia from February 2008 until January 2011,and the Australian Defence Attachéand Head Australian Defence Staff in Washington,D.C. He retired from the army in 2014.
Major General Mark Andrew Kelly,is a former senior officer in the Australian Army. He served as Commander Joint Task Force 633 commanding all Australian Forces in the Middle East Area of Operations and Afghanistan from 12 January 2009 until 14 January 2010,and as Land Commander Australia from July 2005 to December 2008. He was appointed as the Repatriation Commissioner on 1 July 2010 and served in that role until 30 June 2019.
Major General Richard Gary Wilson,AO is a retired senior officer of the Australian Army. He served as Director of the Defence Intelligence Organisation from 2009 to 2011,and Chairman of the Queensland Reconstruction Authority in the wake of the 2010–11 Queensland floods.
Lieutenant General John Graham Caligari,is a retired senior officer of the Australian Army. He served as Chief Capability Development Group from October 2014 until his retirement in August 2015.
Rear Admiral Trevor Norman Jones,is a retired senior officer in the Royal Australian Navy (RAN). He served as Deputy Chief of Navy from 2011 to 2013,Head Military Strategic Commitments from April 2013 to December 2014,and the Commander Joint Task Force 633 from December 2014 to January 2016.
Major General Peter Warwick "Gus" Gilmore,is a retired senior officer of the Australian Army. A graduate of the Royal Military College,Duntroon,he was commissioned into the Royal Australian Infantry Corps in 1983 and spent much of his career in special forces. He commanded the Special Air Service Regiment (2001–02),led the first contingent of the Australian Special Operations Task Group in Afghanistan (2001–02),was responsible for the Coalition Advisory Support Team in Iraq (2005–06),and commanded International Security Assistance Force Special Operations Forces (2009–10). Following promotion to major general he held a succession of senior appointments,including Special Operations Commander Australia (2011–13),Deputy Chief of Army (2013–15),and Commander Forces Command (2015–16). His final appointment was as Head Military Strategic Commitments Division from 2016 to 2019.
Lieutenant General Richard Maxwell "Rick" Burr,is a retired senior officer of the Australian Army,who served as Chief of Army from 2 July 2018 to 1 July 2022. He was previously Commander 1st Division from 2011 to 2012,Deputy Commanding General –Operations,United States Army Pacific from January 2013 to November 2014,and Deputy Chief of Army from 2015 to 2018.
Major General Stuart Lyle Smith,is a retired senior officer of the Australian Army. He commanded the 1st Division from October 2012 until November 2015,when he was appointed Deputy Chief of Joint Operations.
Major General Simone Louise Wilkie,is a retired Australian Army officer who was the Australian Deputy National Commander in the War in Afghanistan in 2011 and 2012. She was Assistant Chief of Staff to General David Petraeus during the Iraq War troop surge of 2007,and was the first female Commanding Officer of the Royal Military College,Duntroon and Commandant at the Army Recruit Training Centre at Kapooka. In March 2013 the Minister for Defence,Stephen Smith,announced her promotion to major general to take over as Commander of the Australian Defence College in July 2013.
General Angus John Campbell,is a retired senior officer in the Australian Army,who served as the Chief of the Defence Force from 6 July 2018 until 10 July 2024. He was previously posted as Commander Operation Sovereign Borders from September 2013 until he was appointed Chief of Army in May 2015.
Vice Admiral Michael Joseph Noonan,is a retired senior officer of the Royal Australian Navy,who served as Chief of Navy from 6 July 2018 to 6 July 2022. He previously served as Commander Border Protection Command from 2013 to 2015 and Deputy Chief of Navy from 2016 to 2018.

His final appointment was as Chief of Joint Operations,from July 2019 to July 2024.

He was Chief of Joint Capabilities from September 2021 to July 2024.
Lieutenant General Susan May Coyle,is a senior officer in the Australian Army. She joined the army as a reservist in 1987 and,following training at the Australian Defence Force Academy,was commissioned into the Royal Australian Corps of Signals in 1992. She has commanded the 104th Signal Squadron (2003–04),17th Signal Regiment (2009–10),Task Group Afghanistan (2015) and the 6th Combat Support Brigade (2017–19),and has deployed on operations to East Timor,the Solomon Islands and Afghanistan. She was appointed Commander Joint Task Force 633,with responsibility for all Australian operations in the Middle East,from January to November 2020. She was the first woman to command the task force,which had oversight for 1,200 personnel under Operation Accordion. Coyle was Head Information Warfare from January 2021 to November 2022,Commander Forces Command from November 2022 to June 2024,and assumed the role of Chief of Joint Capabilities in July 2024.
Lieutenant General Simon Andrew Stuart,is a senior officer of the Australian Army who has served as the Chief of Army since July 2022. He was commissioned into the Royal Australian Infantry Corps from the Royal Military College,Duntroon in 1990. He has commanded the 8th/9th Battalion,Royal Australian Regiment (2008–10),Joint Task Force 631 (2010) and Combined Team Uruzgan (2012–13),and deployed to East Timor as part of Operations Warden,Tanager and Astute and to Afghanistan and the Sinai Peninsula. He was Force Commander,Multinational Force and Observers in the Sinai from 2017 to 2019,and Head Land Capability from 2020 to 2022. He succeeded Lieutenant General Rick Burr as Chief of Army on 2 July 2022.
Lieutenant General Gavan John Reynolds,is a retired senior officer in the Australian Army who is the Commissioner of the Australian Border Force since 2024. He joined the army via the Royal Military College,Duntroon in 1985 and has spent much of his career in military intelligence. He has commanded the 1st Intelligence Battalion (2004–05) and the 6th Combat Support Brigade (2013–15),and deployed on operations to the Persian Gulf,Lebanon and Syria,Iraq,and Afghanistan. He served as Head Military Strategic Plans from 2019 to 2020,before being appointed as the inaugural Chief of Defence Intelligence in July 2020.
Major General Brian Robert Dawson,is an Australian museum administrator and a retired senior officer of the Australian Army. He joined the army via the Royal Military College,Duntroon in 1973 and was commissioned into the Royal Australian Infantry Corps. He commanded the Base Administrative Support Centre (1995–96),Australian Defence Force Academy (2006–07) and Australian Defence College (2007),deployed on operations to Somalia and the Solomon Islands,and was Deputy Commander Joint Task Force 633 –Iraq from 2007 to 2008. He also served as Director General of Defence Public Affairs (2008–10) and,from 2010 to 2013,was Australia's first Military Representative to NATO and the European Union. Following his retirement from the army,Dawson joined the Australian War Memorial where he has served as Assistant Director,National Collection since December 2017.
