Paulson Fontaine Press

Paulson Fontaine Press (formerly Paulson Bott Press) is a printmaking studio, gallery, and publisher of contemporary fine art prints in Berkeley, California. Many of their publications are etchings. More than half of their published editions have been produced with minority or female artists. [1] In a 2011 interview, Pam Paulson stated: "We plan projects with emerging, mid-career, and blue-chip artists. We keep a balance." [2]

History

In 1993, Pam Paulson, who had previously worked at Crown Point Press, began conducting workshops in intaglio printmaking and producing editions with local artists from an 800 square-foot studio in Emeryville, California. [2] In 1996, she and Renee Bott co-founded Paulson Press, moving to a larger studio space in Emeryville. Their first publications were Chris Brown's "Train Series" prints; these quickly sold out, providing capital for the business to begin extending invitations to artists from outside the Bay Area, starting with Radcliffe Bailey. [2] In 1999, the press relocated to 9th Street in Berkeley, where they produced and exhibited prints by artists such as Brown and Deborah Oropallo. In 2009, they moved to their current location on 4th Street in Berkeley. [3] In 2016, gallery director Rhea Fontaine became a partner and the press was renamed Paulson Fontaine Press. [4] Fontaine is one of the first African-American women in history to publish fine art prints by contemporary artists. [4]

In 2015, the press's entire archive was acquired by the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco; the archive, comprising nearly 500 prints by more than forty artists, is held at the Achenbach Foundation for Graphic Arts. [1]

In 2018, the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts (PAFA) announced that it would become the sole East Coast repository for prints by African American artists from Paulson Fontaine Press. [7]

Gee's Bend

In 1999, Mary Lee and Louisiana Bendolph, quilters from Gee's Bend, Alabama, were invited to the press where they printed and published editions of color aquatints with spit bite and softground etching. The press set up sewing machines so that the Bendolphs could compose their designs as quilts. The printers then made impressions of the quilts using softground to create etching plates which were used as matrices for prints on paper. A second project included two more Gee's Bend quilters. "Personal to Political" Exhibition

In 2018, curator Carrie Lederer organized the exhibition "Personal to Political: Celebrating the African-American Artists of Paulson Fontaine Press" at Bedford Gallery in Walnut Creek. The exhibition will travel through 2022 to venues across the United States including the Krasl Art Center in St Joseph, MI; Gallery 360 at Northeastern University, Boston, MA; Las Cruces Museum of Art in New Mexico; the Museum of Arts and Sciences, Daytona Beach, FL; the Charles H. Wright Museum of African-American History in Detroit, MI; the Montgomery Museum of Fine Arts, Montgomery, AL; the Art Museum of West Virginia University in Morgantown; the Robert and Frances Fullerton Museum of Art at CSU San Bernardino, CA; the Fort Wayne Museum of Art in Fort Wayne, IN; the DeVos Art Museum at North Michigan University; Mills College Art Museum in Oakland, CA; and the Bakersfield Museum of Art in Bakersfield, CA. The quilts of Gee's Bend are quilts created by a group of women and their ancestors who live or have lived in the isolated African-American hamlet of Gee's Bend, Alabama along the Alabama River. The quilts of Gee's Bend are among the most important African-American visual and cultural contributions to the history of art within the United States. Arlonzia Pettway, Annie Mae Young and Mary Lee Bendolph are among some of the most notable quilters from Gee's Bend. Many of the residents in the community can trace their ancestry back to enslaved people from the Pettway Plantation. Arlonzia Pettway can recall her grandmother's stories of her ancestors, specifically of Dinah Miller, who was brought to the United States by slave ship in 1859.

Friends, Institutional and Business members are admitted by fee. CSP is based in the San Francisco Bay Area, California.

Kathan Brown is an American master printmaker, writer, lecturer, and entrepreneur. In 1962, Brown founded Crown Point Press, a fine art print shop specializing in etching, and has owned and directed the shop since then. Crown Point Press is widely credited with sparking the revival of etching as a viable art medium. Some of the most important artists of our time, including John Cage, Chuck Close, Anish Kapoor, Ed Ruscha, Kiki Smith and Pat Steir, have worked there.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Vitreography</span> Glass art printmaking technique

Vitreography is a fine art printmaking technique that uses a 38-inch-thick (9.5 mm) float glass matrix instead of the traditional matrices of metal, wood or stone. A print created using the technique is called a vitreograph. Unlike a monotype, in which ink is painted onto a smooth glass plate and transferred to paper to produce a unique work, the vitreograph technique involves fixing the imagery in, or on, the glass plate. This allows the production of an edition of prints.

Warrington Wickham Colescott Jr. was an American artist, he is best known for his satirical etchings. He was a master printmaker and operated Mantegna Press in Hollandale, Wisconsin, with his wife and fellow artist Frances Myers. Colescott died on 10 September 2018, at the age of 97.

Riva Helfond was an American artist and printmaker best known for her social realist studies of working people's lives.

Louisiana Bendolph is an American visual artist and quilt maker. Bendolph is associated with The Quilts of Gee's Bend and her work has been considered more conceptual because of her use of vibrant color.

Mary Lee Bendolph is an American quilt maker of the Gee's Bend Collective from Gee's Bend (Boykin), Alabama. Her work has been influential on subsequent quilters and artists and her quilts have been exhibited in museums and galleries around the country. Bendolph uses fabric from used clothing for quilting in appreciation of the "love and spirit" with old cloth. Bendolph has spent her life in Gee's Bend and has had work featured in the Philadelphia Museum of Art as well as the Minneapolis Institute of Art in Minnesota.

Stephanie Elaine Pogue (1944–2002) was an American professor, printmaker, artist, and curator. Her artistic interests included the portrayal of women and the human figure.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Peter Matthews (printmaker)</span>

Peter Jeffrey Matthews is a British printmaker, former teacher at Royal College of Art (RCA) and senior lecturer at Wimbledon School of Art. Educated at Ealing School of Art, Matthews went on to assist at Editions Alecto and editioned most of David Hockney's early etchings. Matthews has also exhibited his own work extensively including at the Royal Academy of Arts (RA), Royal Watercolour Society (RWS) Gallery, and with the Royal Society of Painter-Printmakers, being elected a Fellow and later Council Member 1984–98. Carole Marie Shepheard is a New Zealand artist. She specialises in printmaking and her work is held in national and international collections including the Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa and the Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tāmaki.

Augusta Payne Briggs Rathbone was an American painter, etcher and printmaker. She studied at the University of California, Berkeley and in Paris.
