Eiko is a feminine Japanese given name. Eikō, also spelled Eikou or Eikoh, is a masculine Japanese given name. The meanings of these names depend on the kanji used to write them.
Eiko Shimamiya, also called Eiko or Peko, is a female J-pop singer-songwriter, and producer who is currently affiliated with Heart Company. She is best known for singing the opening themes of the anime series Higurashi When They Cry. Eiko also handles a school called Shimamiya Size (S-size) in Sapporo. Some of her former students are I've Sound singers Mami Kawada, Kotoko and Kaori Utatsuki. She announced on May 10, 2010, via Twitter that she was diagnosed with thyroid cancer. Her "Perfect World Live Tour", which was scheduled to begin in June, was subsequently canceled. She made an announcement of her full recovery from cancer on January 28, 2011.
O is the first full-length album from Eiko Shimamiya, it includes the hit single Higurashi no Naku Koro ni. A limited edition with a DVD including the music video of Higurashi no Naku Koro ni is available. The album charted for five weeks on the Oricon charts and sold 10,000 copies.
“Higurashi no Naku Koro Ni” is the first single of Eiko Shimamiya under I've Sound and Geneon Entertainment label. Released on May 24, 2006 and reached #18 in the Oricon weekly charts. It has sold an approximate total of 35,000 copies and stayed in the charts for 26 weeks making this Eiko's most selling and longest charting single to date. The title track was used as the opening theme for the first season of the anime series Higurashi: When They Cry, and was also used as the ending theme of the first episode of Higurashi: When They Cry – Gou. Composition wise, it is written in the key of E Minor.
"Naraku no Hana" [also read as Flower in Hell] is Eiko Shimamiya's second single produced by I've Sound and Geneon Entertainment. It was released on August 22, 2007. It was able to reach #12 in the Oricon weekly charts making this Eiko's most successful single. It has sold more than 34,000 copies and stayed in the charts for 15 weeks. The title track was used as the opening theme for the anime series, Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Kai, which is the sequel to the anime Higurashi no Naku Koro ni.
