Higurashi When They Cry, known simply as When They Cry for the North American release of the anime adaptation before 2020, is a Japanese murder mystery dōjin soft visual novel series produced by 07th Expansion that comprises the first two entries of the When They Cry franchise. The series focuses on a group of young friends living in the fictional rural village of Hinamizawa and the strange events that occur there in 1983.
07th Expansion is a Japanese dōjin circle specialized in the creation of visual novels and sound. They started out drawing for the trading card game Leaf Fight, but are known for creating the game series When They Cry. The remake games on additional consoles for Higurashi When They Cry were produced by Alchemist.

Umineko When They Cry is a Japanese dōjin soft visual novel series produced by 07th Expansion. Its first episode debuted at Comiket 72 for Windows on August 17, 2007. The story focuses on a group of eighteen people on a secluded island for a period of two days, and the mysterious murders that befall them. Readers are challenged to discern whether the murders were committed by a human or of some other supernatural source, as well as the method and motive behind them. The eight main Umineko games are split into two sets of four, which are considered the third and fourth titles in the When They Cry series, preceded by the two sets of Higurashi When They Cry games and followed by Ciconia When They Cry.
“Higurashi no Naku Koro Ni” is the first single of Eiko Shimamiya under I've Sound and Geneon Entertainment label. Released on May 24, 2006 and reached #18 in the Oricon weekly charts. It has sold an approximate total of 35,000 copies and stayed in the charts for 26 weeks making this Eiko's most selling and longest charting single to date. The title track was used as the opening theme for the first season of the anime series Higurashi When They Cry, and was also used as the ending theme of the first episode of Higurashi: When They Cry – Gou. Composition wise, it is written in the key of E Minor.

It was able to reach #12 in the Oricon weekly charts making this Eiko's most successful single. It has sold more than 34,000 copies and stayed in the charts for 15 weeks. The title track was used as the opening theme for the anime series, Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Kai, which is the sequel to the anime Higurashi no Naku Koro ni.
"Wheel of Fortune" is Eiko Shimamiya's third single produced by I've Sound and Geneon Entertainment label. It was released on April 16, 2008. The title track is used as the opening theme to the live-action movie for the anime series Higurashi no Naku Koro ni. The B-side "Diorama" is the ending theme to the series.

The single was scheduled to be released on July 29, 2009, a month after releasing her fifth single Super scription of data. It has to be noted that this is Shimamiya's first single which does not have an anime tie-in.
