Peter Fook Meng Choong AO is an Australian doctor and professor who specializes in orthopaedics. He is the Director of Orthopaedics at St. Vincent's Hospital, Melbourne [1] and the Hugh Devine Chair of Surgery at the University of Melbourne. In 2014, he became the first surgeon to perform a 3D-printed heel transplant.

Early life and education

Choong was born in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. [2] He was a non-resident student of Trinity College from 1979 onwards while completing his undergraduate studies at the University of Melbourne, which he did in 1984, before continuing with his advanced surgical training at St. Vincent's Hospital, Melbourne. After earning his MD, he was appointed to orthopaedic fellowships at University Hospital in Lund, Sweden and the Mayo Clinic in the U.S. state of Minnesota. [3]

Career

Choong was named the Director of Orthopaedics at St. Vincent's Hospital, Melbourne in 1996. He also established the Sarcoma Service at the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre at that time. Between 2005 and 2008, he served as Chief Medical Officer at St. Vincent's. In 2009, he was named the Hugh Devine Chair of Surgery at the University of Melbourne. [3] In 2013, Choong was appointed President of the Australian Orthopaedic Association. [4] Together with Gordon Wallace of the ARC Centre of Excellence for Electromaterials Science, [5] Choong also began working with the BioPen, a handheld 3D printer used by surgeons to deliver cells and other materials to repair damaged tissue. [6] He helped develop concepts for use in clinical trials. Choong and Wallace's work with the BioPen appeared in a 2016 issue of the journal, Biofabrication . [5] [7]

In October 2014, Choong performed the first 3D-printed heel transplant using a titanium heel replica. [2] As of 2018, Choong is the head of the musculoskeletal research program at St. Vincent's Hospital, the Chair of the Bone and Soft Tissue Sarcoma Service at the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre, and has contributed to over 360 peer-reviewed articles. [8] He is also a leader in the National Health and Medical Research Council's Centre for Research Excellence. [9]

In June 2022, Choong was appointed Officer of the Order of Australia in the 2022 Queen's Birthday Honours for "distinguished service to orthopaedic medicine, to research and tertiary medical education, and to professional associations". [10]

Gregory Bruce Mann is a surgical oncologist and Director of Breast Cancer Services at the Royal Women's Hospital in Melbourne, Australia, the largest specialist women's care hospital in Australia. A former president of COSA, Dr. Mann served previously as Director of Cancer Services and Infectious Medicine for the Melbourne Health Cancer Service, as Director of the award-winning Melbourne Health Combined Breast Service and is Director of Advanced Surgical Training at the Royal Melbourne Hospital. Sir Herbert John Seddon was an English orthopaedic surgeon. He was Nuffield Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of Oxford, where his work and publications on peripheral nerve injuries gained him an international reputation. His classification of nerve injuries forms the basis of that in use into the 21st century. He went on to become director of the new Institute of Orthopaedics in London and subsequently the first Professor of Orthopaedics in the University of London. In this role he directed basic science research into orthopaedic conditions and developed postgraduate training in orthopaedic surgery. He was President of the British Orthopaedic Association, and was knighted in 1964 for services to orthopaedics.

Gopal Krishna Vishwakarma, more popularly known as G K Vishwakarma, was an eminent orthopedic surgeon, academician and public health administrator. He was the Director General of Health Services from October 1986 to his retirement in October 1992. He was awarded the Silver Jubilee Award (1983) and the Dr. B. C. Roy Award by Medical Council of India, The Government of India, in recognition of his contributions to the field of medicine and public health honored him with the Padma Shri (1985) one of India's highest civilian awards in India.

Raju Vaishya is an Indian researcher with contributions in the field of orthopaedics. He is former President and founder member of Indian Cartilage Society (2018–19) and Founder President of Arthritis Care Foundation. He has established a center for Autologous Chondrocyte Implantation (ACI) at Indraprastha Apollo Hospitals, New Delhi, India. Instrumental (PSI) in starting the first cartilage club in Delhi, to enhance the awareness about the cartilage science and regenerative treatments used in Orthopaedics. He has the credit of doing the first preplan patient specific instruments (PSI) total knee arthroplasty, in Northern India in May 2013.

Robert Bransby Zachary was an English paediatric surgeon who spent the majority of his career at Sheffield Children's Hospital. He was an expert on the treatment of spina bifida and hydrocephalus.

Hans-Christoph Pape is a German surgeon and trauma surgeon and was appointed full professor of traumatology at the Medical Faculty of the University of Zurich on 31 October 2016, effective 1 February 2017. He heads the Department of Traumatology at the University Hospital Zurich. In particular, his research on polytrauma, pelvic fractures and severe joint injuries (articular) helped him to achieve a high international profile. From 2005 to 2009, he was head of the trauma surgery department at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC), Pittsburgh, USA. From 2009 to 2016, he was head of the Department of Trauma and Reconstructive Surgery at the University Hospital RWTH Aachen. Since March 2018, he has also once again been an adjunct professor at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC), Pittsburgh.
