Peter M. Harper (born in 1974) is an American sculptor, musician, and academic. He is best known for his vocals and tenor guitar, especially in France, where he has had made several concert tours.
Harper was born in 1974, the youngest child of a black father and a Jewish mother, multi-instrumentalist Ellen Harper (née Chase). [1] They divorced before Peter was two years old, and he and his elder brothers, Ben and Joel, were raised by their mother. [1] [2] Friday and Saturday nights she played in a band, working the rest of the time at her parents' music store, the Folk Music Center, in Claremont, California. [1] [3] The shop was a music hub. It sold and repaired instruments, gave music lessons, hosted performances, and in 1976 added a museum of rare and antique instruments and folk art. [4] Harper received no formal art instruction at school, but in the afternoons hung out at the store, [5] where he was exposed to all kinds of instruments, music, and musicians. [3] There he learned instrument repair and started crafting small ceramic sculptures. [5] In his late teens and early twenties, he dabbled with playing guitar, but was unsatisfied with it. [3]
Harper attended Pitzer College in Claremont, where he majored in political studies with an emphasis on the Third World. [5] [6] A semester studying abroad in Zimbabwe when he was 19 was extended after he was admitted to the Mzilikazi Arts and Crafts Centre in Bulawayo. [5] [7] There he received intensive formal training in figural sculpture. [5] The next year he returned to Pitzer, and completed his BA in 1996. [6] He went on to earn an MA in art at New York University (NYU). [3] After graduate school he returned to Pomona, California, where he learned mold making, and bronze became his favorite medium of sculpture. [5] Through 2006, he averaged about two exhibitions a year, in California and New York. [8]
Harper wasn't a surfer until his brother Ben tried it and rhapsodized about the experience. Peter got a friend who surfs to take him out, and was immediately hooked. [9] Not long thereafter, at the filming of the music video for Ben's 2003 song With My Own Two Hands , Peter met three brothers who allowed that they surfed "sometimes", and invited him to join them. When he did, it immediately became obvious that they were experts, although it wasn't until later that Harper learned the three, Chris, Dan, and Keith Malloy, are famous surfers. [10] It was partly through the Malloys that in 2005 Harper became involved with the Surfrider Foundation. Chris Malloy was helping coordinate a charity art auction for the environmental organization, and asked him to participate. Harper turned a surfboard into a work of art for the fundraiser. [11] It marked the beginning of his commitment to environmental awareness.
In August 2006 he joined California State University Channel Islands as a lecturer in art. [12]
In his mid-thirties he circled back to music, falling in love with the ukulele, and then the tenor guitar (a four-string relative of the guitar, banjo, and ukulele), and starting to write songs. [3] As he expresses it,
The message I wanted to transmit through my art could no longer take the form of a tangible three dimensional object. I needed to reach deeper into people's minds to make a more profound impact. [13]
He continued to sculpt and teach, but focused increasingly on his music. [14] In 2013, Harper released his self-titled debut album of eleven tracks. He made a solo tour of France in May 2016, playing 17 concerts in intimate venues, mostly in the southwest. [7] [15] A European edition of his first album followed in January 2017, [10] with two additional tracks: an acoustic version of "Take it Home", and an English-French bilingual version of "Can't Stop Now".
At a studio run by Sheldon Gomberg, he recorded a second album, Break the Cycle, with some of the musicians who tour with him in the United States as "Racing Alone". [16] The name of the group echos his conviction that people focus too much on competition, whereas the competition that matters is with oneself, to be better tomorrow than yesterday. [17] He made a second European tour of 28 dates in January–February 2017, concentrated in France, but also including Belgium, England, Spain, and Switzerland. [10] [14] [18] The tour was organized in conjunction with the Surfrider Foundation Europe, for which he formally became an ambassador. [16] Break the Cycle was released in April. [19]
Richard Anthony Monsour, known professionally as Dick Dale, was an American rock guitarist. He was a pioneer of surf music, drawing on Middle Eastern music scales and experimenting with reverb. Dale was known as "The King of the Surf Guitar", which was also the title of his second studio album.
Robert Kelly Slater is an American professional surfer, best known for being crowned World Surf League champion a record 11 times. Slater is widely regarded as the greatest professional surfer of all time, and holds 56 Championship Tour victories. Slater is also the oldest surfer still active on the World Surf League, winning his 8th Billabong Pipeline Masters title at age 49.
Jack Hody Johnson is an American singer-songwriter, filmmaker, and former professional surfer. Johnson is known primarily for his work in the soft rock and acoustic pop genres. In 2001, he achieved commercial success after the release of his debut album, Brushfire Fairytales. Johnson has reached number one on the Billboard 200 chart with his albums Sing-A-Longs and Lullabies for the Film Curious George in 2006, Sleep Through the Static in 2008, To the Sea in 2010 and From Here to Now to You in 2013. His album In Between Dreams peaked at number two on the chart in 2005 and again in 2013.
David Perry Lindley was an American musician who founded the rock band El Rayo-X and worked with many other performers including Jackson Browne, Linda Ronstadt, Ry Cooder, Bonnie Raitt, Warren Zevon, Curtis Mayfield and Dolly Parton. He mastered such a wide variety of instruments that Acoustic Guitar magazine referred to him not as a multi-instrumentalist but instead as a "maxi-instrumentalist." On stage, Lindley was known for wearing garishly colored polyester shirts with clashing pants, gaining the nickname the Prince of Polyester.
James William Lindberg is an American singer and guitarist. Active since the 1980s, when he played in local bands in his early career, he is best known as the songwriter and lead singer of the punk rock band Pennywise, which he fronted from 1988 to 2009, and has again since 2012. He also founded The Black Pacific, who released a debut album in 2010.
Tom Freund is an American singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist. Freund's music consists of elements of folk rock, americana and alternative rock. Freund met Ben Harper when he was attending Pitzer College in Claremont, California. In 1992 the duo released an album, Pleasure and Pain. Not long after, he joined the alternative country group The Silos as their bassist, and moved to Austin, Texas. He released his debut solo album, North American Long Weekend, in 1998 and has released albums on his own Surf Road Records since 2000. While releasing his own music, Tom has also contributed to albums by artists including Graham Parker, Mandy Moore, and Josh Kelley. Some of his work, including "Copper Moon", appeared on the TV program One Tree Hill, while other songs have appeared on Dawson's Creek and Parenthood.
Shaun Tomson is a South African professional surfer and former world champion, environmentalist, actor, author, and businessman. He has been listed among the top 10 surfers of the century, and was the 1977 World Surfing Champion.
Surf culture includes the people, language, fashion, and lifestyle surrounding the sport of surfing. The history of surfing began with the ancient Polynesians. That initial culture directly influenced modern surfing, which began to flourish and evolve in the early 20th century, with its popularity peaking during the 1950s and 1960s. It has affected music, fashion, literature, film, art, and youth jargon in popular culture. The number of surfers throughout the world continues to increase as the culture spreads.
The Surfrider Foundation USA is a U.S. 501(c)(3) grassroots non-profit environmental organization that works to protect and preserve the world's oceans, waves and beaches. It focuses on water quality, beach access, beach and surf spot preservation, and sustaining marine and coastal ecosystems.
Spirit of Surfing is a low-key initiative started in 1995 by longtime surfer, Peter Cuming, surf elders Rob Conneelly, and Nat Young, and surf artist Roscoe Kermode. Spirit of Surfing was established to promote the traditions of free surfing; respect for the ocean, the land, and indigenous and local cultures wherever surfers are and travel; fostering community spirit; and an harmonious relationship with the natural environment. These key messages are shared and encouraged in the water amongst surfers and through other opportunities such as festivals, forums, gatherings and local surfing communities. It was first presented to the Angourie Boardriders in late 1995, at Yamba, in NSW. They adopted the general Spirit of Surfing (SoS) principles in their approach to their activities including a stronger focus on active beach restoration work as part of their regular surfing sessions and competitions. Peter Cuming liaised with Nat Young, past world short and longboard surfing champion, who supported the aims, and raised the concept in his working relationship with the World Longboard Championship Tour to engage in adopting the principles.
Lo Presher is an American rock band formed in 1992 in Brevard County, Florida. The band released three studio albums and toured extensively, including performances on the Vans Warped Tour. The band is usually classified under Surf Rock, but fans are credited with labeling their style as Tribal Alternative, a musical movement popular in the U.S. underground independent scene of the late nineties, of which the band is credited for influencing. They are best known for their work on musical soundtracks for extreme sports videos and for their live, theatrical percussion performances in which they play homemade instruments. The band's name is sometimes credited as Lo Pressure or Low Pressure
Mark Massara is an American surfer, attorney, and environmental conservationist. He first gained a reputation in the surfing and environmental communities when he won a $5.6 million Clean Water Act violation, the second largest ever collected. Since that case, he has assisted nonprofit organizations, including Surfrider Foundation and Sierra Club, government agencies, and private sector enterprises in several high-profile coastal and ocean protection, restoration, education and development campaigns that highlight and achieve coastal conservation and amenities for wildlife and future generations.
International Surfing Day, held annually on the third Saturday of June, is an unofficial, environmentally conscious sports-centered holiday that celebrates the sport of surfing, surfing lifestyle, and the sustainability of ocean resources. Contests and prizes are also part of the celebration, with surfing-related industries donating prizes such as surfboards and wetsuits. Another purpose of the celebration is to promote the popularity of surfing and to attract new participants.

To the Sea is the fifth studio album by singer-songwriter Jack Johnson, released on May 26, 2010, in Japan, May 31, 2010 in the United Kingdom and June 1, 2010, in the United States, through Universal Republic Records and Brushfire Music Group. The album debuted at number 1 in the United States, selling 243,000 copies in its first week.
A Brokedown Melody is a 2004 documentary surf film from Woodshed Films directed by singer/songwriter Jack Johnson and his film school friend Chris Malloy. Presented as a special screening to benefit the Kōkua Hawai'i Foundation at the Hawaii Theatre in Honolulu on August 11, 2004, the film had premieres during the fall of 2004 at the Malibu International Film Festival (MIFF) on September 16, 2004, at the Laguna Beach Festival of Arts during the 2nd annual Moonshine Festival on October 9, 2004, at the Arlington Theater in Santa Barbara in October, 2004, and at the Hawai'i International Film Festival (HIFF) in Honolulu in October, 2004. It is the fourth of The Moonshine Conspiracy films.

Christopher Lloyd Darrow was an American multi-instrumentalist and singer-songwriter. He was considered to be a pioneer of country rock music in the late-1960s and performed and recorded with numerous groups, including Kaleidoscope and the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band.
