Peter John Hughes OBE (born 14 September 1953) [1] is a British diplomat. From 2013 to 2018 he was the British High Commissioner to Belize. [1] [2]

Hughes joined the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) in 1976 and served in Islamabad, Rome, Warsaw, Sydney, Castries, Colombo and Kabul before being appointed Ambassador to North Korea in 2008 where he served until 2011.

Andy Wigmore told : "BATSUB — which is British Army Training Support Unit—only came back a few years ago. It was out of the jurisdiction for about 10 years and if it was not for the wonderful ambassador there, a guy called Peter Hughes, and the ambassador previously, who lobbied Parliament to bring in BATSUB, the training and support unit, back into Belize" [3]

Honours

Hughes was appointed Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in the 2012 Birthday Honours. [4]

Controversy

Hughes sparked controversy in 2009 with a blog entry that described the "festive atmosphere" in Pyongyang. [5]

British Deputy High Commission, Chennai

The British Deputy High Commission, Chennai is the United Kingdom diplomatic mission with responsibility for southern India, namely, the states of Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Tamil Nadu and the union territory of Puducherry. The Deputy High Commissioner is equivalent to a Consul-General, and reports to the British High Commission. The current Deputy High Commissioner is Oliver Ballhatchet. He succeeds Jeremy Pilmore-Bedford.

Sir Peter James Lawler was an Australian senior public servant and diplomat. He served in senior roles under Prime Ministers Menzies, Holt, McEwen, Gorton, McMahon, Whitlam, Fraser and Hawke, and ended his career as Ambassador to Ireland and the Holy See.

British Army Training and Support Unit Belize

British Army Training Support Unit Belize (BATSUB), the successor of the former British Forces Belize, is the name given to the current (2018) British Army Garrison in Belize. The garrison is used primarily for jungle warfare training, with access to over 5,000 square miles of jungle terrain, provided by the Government of Belize.

Edney Cain

Sir Henry Edney Conrad Cain was a Belizean accountant who dedicated 51 years of his life as a public servant. He was knighted in 1986 by Queen Elizabeth II and received the award of "Order of Distinguished Service" in 2006. He is recognized as a renowned Belizean because of his contribution to the stabilizing of Belize's high liquidity and payment problems in 1987 through which he rebuilt Belize's foreign reserves.

Thorhilda Mary Vivia "Thorda" Abbott-Watt OBE is a British diplomat who currently serves as British High Commissioner to Tonga.

Catherine Arnold

Catherine Elizabeth Jane Arnold, is a British academic administrator and former diplomat. Since October 2019, she has been the Master of St Edmund's College, Cambridge: she is the fifteenth person to hold that post and the first woman. From May 2015 until 2018 she served as Her Majesty's Ambassador to Mongolia. After three degrees, she worked as a management consultant and then journalist. She had joined the Foreign and Commonwealth Office in 2006.

Jane Marriott is a British diplomat. Marriott was the Director of the Joint International Counter-Terrorism Unit. She was appointed the British High Commissioner to Kenya, and began her consular duties in the Summer of 2019.
