Phoenix Military Academy is a public military high school in Chicago Illinois, United States.

History

Phoenix Military Academy, (Commonly abbreviated as PMA) was founded in 2004 and originally located in the same building as Orr Academy High School. It has since been moved to Grant Campus or the older location of Orr.

Academics

All students are required to attain 24 credits to graduate. In addition to usual core subjects such as English and the sciences, students also take two years of foreign language, Two years of the arts and are mandated to take classes to prepare for ROTC. [1]

In June 2015, it was announced that PMA was awarded a $6 million DOD grant for a new STEM and Leadership Academy Pilot Program. [2] [3]

Phoenix Military Academy is rated a 6 out of 10 by GreatSchools.org, a national school quality information site. [4] GreatSchools’ Summary Rating is based on four of the school’s themed ratings: the Test Score Rating, Student or Academic Progress Rating, College Readiness Rating, and Equity Rating and flags for discipline and attendance disparities at a school.

Urban Prep Academies is a nonprofit organization that operated three free open-enrollment public all-male college-preparatory high schools in Chicago. Founded in 2002, and receiving its first charter approval from Chicago Public Schools in 2005, it operates the first all-male public charter high school in the United States. The network opened a second campus in 2009 and a third in August 2010. From 2010 to 2019, 100% of the seniors in the school's graduating classes were admitted to four-year colleges or universities. In 2023 its charter was revoked over misconduct allegations and Chicago Public Schools moved to take over its campuses. The decision is controversial and is being contested in court.
