The Pine Mountain Regional Library System is a group of seven public libraries that serve Meriwether, Upson, Talbot, and Taylor Counties in Georgia. The library regional headquarters is located in Manchester, Georgia.
A public library is a library that is accessible by the general public and is usually funded from public sources, such as taxes. It is operated by librarians and library paraprofessionals, who are also civil servants.
Meriwether County is a county located in the west central portion of the U.S. state of Georgia. As of the 2010 census, the population was 21,992. The county seat is Greenville, home of the Meriwether County Courthouse. The county was formed on December 14, 1827 as the 73rd county in Georgia. It was named for David Meriwether, a general in the American Revolutionary War and member of Congress from Georgia.
Upson County is a county located in the west central Piedmont portion of the U.S. state of Georgia. As of the 2010 census, the population was 27,153. The county seat is Thomaston. The county was created on December 15, 1824.
Pine Mountain Library is a member of PINES, a program of the Georgia Public Library Service that covers 53 library systems in 143 counties of Georgia. [2] Any resident in a PINES supported library system has access to the system's collection of 10.6 million books. [3] The library is also serviced by GALILEO, a program of the University System of Georgia which stands for "GeorgiA LIbrary LEarning Online". This program offers residents in supported libraries access to over 100 databases indexing thousands of periodicals and scholarly journals. It also boasts over 10,000 journal titles in full text. [4]
The Public Information Network for Electronic Services is the nearly statewide library consortium and its online library catalog of the Georgia Public Library Service. By June 2017, the catalog consisted of books from 284 library facilities in 143 counties across the U.S. state of Georgia with a collection size of 10.6 million items, all of which are searchable by anyone with a PINES library card which can be obtained free of charge from any PINES-participating library.
The Georgia Public Library Service (GPLS) is the state agency for libraries in the State of Georgia and a unit of the University System of Georgia. The service was initially founded in 1996 after the inception of the Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA), and in July 2000 moved from the Georgia Department of Technical and Adult Education (DTAE) to the Georgia Board of Regents and University System of Georgia. Julie Walker is the current State Librarian.
The first library in the region was started in 1938 in Manchester, Georgia and was sponsored by both the Woman's Club of Manchester as well as the city. Initially this library was located at the police station and housed 100 volumes that were borrowed from the state of Georgia. [5]
In Meriwether County, the first library was chartered in 1950. The following year neighboring counties Talbot and Upson agreed to add their collections to the growing collection of Meriwether and thus formed a regional library system. With the addition of Taylor County in 1958 the name of the library was changed to its present form. [5]
In 1972 a need for new buildings arose and three new libraries were constructed in Butler, Talbotton, and Greenville. By the next year another library branch opened in Thomaston. This branch moved in 1980 and was rededicated as the Hightower Memorial Library. [5]
In 1994 the Butler and Greenville libraries each received their own new buildings. The headquarters library, which was previously moved to the basement of the county community building, received a renovation and enlargement of its own in 1995. The newest library finished construction in 2002 in Yatesville. [5]
