Pioneer Pacific College was a private for-profit college with its main campus in Beaverton, Oregon. Founded in 1981, it primarily offered Associate degrees and certificate programs.

History

Pioneer Pacific College began in 1981 as an electronics school in Corvallis, Oregon, named Skilltronics. [1] Founded by Irene and James Childers, the training school was moved to Wilsonville in 1983. [2] Pacific Education Corporation purchased Skilltronics in 1989 and changed the name to Pioneer Pacific College with accreditation coming in 1995. [1] Former Oregon legislator Kelly Clark co-owned the college in the early 1990s. [3]

In 1999, the college added a campus in Clackamas and the next year moved the main campus to a larger facility. [2] For the 2001 to 2002 academic year the school granted 108 associate degrees. [4] Pioneer Pacific started a criminal justice program in 2002 that offered an associate degree at its Wilsonville campus. [5] Also in 2002, the school established a campus in Lane County adjacent to the University of Oregon, [6] with the campus relocating the next year to Springfield. [7]

Bachelor's degrees were added in 2004, first with information technology and then others in 2005. [1] In 2004, the college added the Health Career Institute, followed by a culinary arts program in 2006. [2] For the 2005 to 2006 academic year the school's criminal justice program ranked 41st in the United States for most associate degrees granted in that field. [8] As of 2007, the school had 1,287 students with 250 graduating each year. [1] In 2012 Pioneer Pacific College was granted approval by the American Bar Associationton to offer the Bachelor of Science Degree in Legal Studies. 2014, In 2014 Springfield campus was granted preliminary approval by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCert) to offer its Associate of Science Degree in Radiologic Technology program. In 2015, Beaverton learning site was opened and granted approval to begin classes from ACICS. [2]

The college announced plans to close its campuses in Portland, Beaverton, and Springfield as well as the Oregon Culinary Institute at the end of July 2020. The college already had plans to fire 131 faculty and staff members due to lowered enrollment it attributed to the COVID-19 pandemic. [9] [10] [11]

Pioneer Pacific College had three campus locations in the Portland Metro and surrounding areas including Beaverton, and Springfield, in addition to a facility for culinary arts in downtown Portland. Pioneer Pacific's main campus was in Beaverton.The Beaverton, OR campus offered courses in legal studies and healthcare. The campus location was opened in August 2015 and granted approval by the ACICS. The Lane County campus was located in Springfield's Gateway District on Sports Way and was housed in a two-story building with 20,000 square feet (1,900 m2) of space. [7] The culinary arts program was taught at the Oregon Culinary Institute in Downtown Portland. The culinary school offered programs in Culinary Management Associate of Applied Science Degree, Culinary Arts, Baking and Pastry Management Associate of Applied Science Degree (AAS), and Baking and Pastry Diploma. [12] Seventy-three percent of students attended full-time and the school employed 119 teachers, of which 41% were full-time faculty members. [13]

Academics

Pioneer Pacific College offered several degree and diploma programs in the healthcare, business, and legal fields. Online/Hybrid Courses were also available through an online platform. The school was accredited by the Accrediting Council for Independent Colleges and Schools since 1995. [14] [15]

Closure

Pioneer Pacific College in Springfield, Beaverton, and Portland, including Oregon Culinary Institute in Portland, closed on approximately July 31, 2020. [16]

The institution was founded in 1887 as the University of Oregon Medical Department and later became the University of Oregon Medical School. In 1974, the campus became an independent, self-governed institution called the University of Oregon Health Sciences Center, combining state dentistry, medicine, nursing, and public health programs into a single center. It was renamed Oregon Health Sciences University in 1981 and took its current name in 2001, as part of a merger with the Oregon Graduate Institute (OGI), in Hillsboro. The university has several partnership programs including a joint PharmD Pharmacy program with Oregon State University in Corvallis.

Beaverton Transit Center is a multimodal transport hub in Beaverton, Oregon, United States. Owned and operated by TriMet, it is served by bus, commuter rail, and light rail. The transit center is MAX Light Rail's 15th station eastbound on the Blue Line and 11th station eastbound on the Red Line. It is also the northern terminus of WES Commuter Rail and a hub for bus routes mostly serving the westside communities of the Portland metropolitan area. Beaverton Transit Center is situated on Southwest Lombard Avenue, just north of Southwest Canyon Road in central Beaverton, connected by walkway to Canyon Place Shopping Center. It recorded 9,709 average weekday boardings for all modes in fall 2018, making it TriMet's busiest transit center.

The Westside Express Service (WES) is a commuter rail line in the U.S. state of Oregon serving parts of Washington and Clackamas counties in the Portland metropolitan area. Owned by TriMet and operated by Portland & Western Railroad (P&W), the line is 14.7 miles (23.7 km) long and travels north–south from Beaverton to Wilsonville along a route just west of Oregon Highway 217 and Interstate 5 (I-5). WES consists of five stations and connects with MAX Light Rail at Beaverton Transit Center. Service operates on a 45-minute headway on weekdays during the morning and evening rush hours. In Spring 2022, WES saw a daily ridership of 420 passengers or about 109,000 riders annually.

The Beaverton Academy of Science and Engineering (BASE) is a public school in the U.S. state of Oregon. Part of the Beaverton School District (BSD), the school offers grades 6 through 12. Opened in 2007, the school was housed in the Capital Center at NE 185th Avenue and Walker Road in Hillsboro, then named the Health and Science School (HS2). From 2016 to 2021, the school is directly adjacent to another BSD option school, the School of Science & Technology (SST), with the relocation of that school to the Capital Center at the end of 2015. The school hosts a HOSA-Future Health Professionals chapter. Oregon Culinary Institute (OCI) was a privately owned, for-profit, accredited trade school located in Portland, Oregon, United States that was part of the Pioneer Pacific College system. It offered programs in culinary arts, baking and pastry, and restaurant management, with a curriculum to prepare graduates for the food-service industry. OCI's campus was located in the Goose Hollow neighborhood of southwest Portland, and included a restaurant staffed by students. Their slogan was "Training Kitchen People".

YTI Career Institute is a private for-profit career college with campuses in Altoona, Lancaster, and York, Pennsylvania. It was established in 1967 and serves a population of approximately 1750 students. YTI Career Institute is accredited by the Accrediting Commission of Career Schools and Colleges.

Oregon Center for Advanced Technology Education (OCATE) was a school in Hillsboro, Oregon, created by the state of Oregon to improve technology education. Established in 1985, the program was a collaboration of most of Oregon’s public universities. OCATE later was absorbed by Portland State University and discontinued in 2006.

It offers bachelor's and master's degrees in the fields of Clinical Laboratory Science and Paramedic Science in partnership with OHSU, and engineering, technology and management degrees in electrical and renewable energy engineering, electronics, embedded systems, manufacturing, mechanical, software engineering, computer science, information technology, operations management, and geomatics. Oregon Tech is also affiliated with the Oregon Manufacturing Innovation Center in Scappoose, Oregon.
