Pittsburg, North Carolina, is an unincorporated community in Scotch Irish Township, Rowan County, North Carolina. It was named for the industrial heritage of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. It is located at 35°49′30″N80°42′01″W / 35.82500°N 80.70028°W with an elevation of 865 feet (264 m). It was first noted in an 1882 map of North Carolina by W.C. Kerr. The Yadkin River is one of the longest rivers in the US state of North Carolina, flowing 215 miles (346 km). It rises in the northwestern portion of the state near the Blue Ridge Parkway's Thunder Hill Overlook. Several parts of the river are impounded by dams for water, power, and flood control.
