Scientific research suggests that most, if not all, are atmospheric reflections, automobile headlights or campfires.

The Trans-Pecos, as originally defined in 1887 by the Texas geologist Robert T. Hill, is the distinct portion of Texas that lies west of the Pecos River. The term is considered synonymous with Far West Texas, a subdivision of West Texas. The Trans-Pecos is part of the Chihuahuan Desert, the largest desert in North America. It is the most mountainous and arid portion of the state, and most of its vast area is sparsely populated. Among the nine counties in the region are the five largest counties by area in Texas and eight of the eleven largest in the state. The area is known for the natural environment of the Big Bend and the gorge of the Rio Grande, part of which has been designated a National Wild and Scenic Rivers System. However, most of the region's population reside in the El Paso metropolitan area. Shafter is a ghost town in Presidio County, Texas. The Texas Attorney General's Office gives a population of 11 as of the 2000 Census. It was named in honor of General William R. Shafter, who at one point commanded the nearby Fort Davis. As of 2012, at least one silver mine, La Mina Grande, has been reopened by Aurcana Corporation.
The Presidio County Courthouse is located in Marfa, Presidio County in the U.S. state of Texas. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1977. It was designated a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark in 1964.
Marfa Girl is a 2012 drama film written and directed by Larry Clark, and released on his website. The film follows a group of youngsters living in the West Texas town of Marfa. It won the Marcus Aurelius Award for Best Film at the 2012 Rome Film Festival.
The Blackwell School was a segregrated school in Marfa, Texas, that served the city's Hispanic population from its construction in 1909 until the end of school segration in 1965. On October 17, 2022, President Joe Biden signed legislation authorizing the establishment of Blackwell School National Historic Site as a unit of the National Park Service upon federal acquisition of the property. The site memorializes the history of supposedly "separate but equal" practices in Texas and elsewhere, as well as the role of education in Mexican American culture and the Marfa community.
