Pocket God is a simulation game developed by Bolt Creative, [4] in which the player manipulates an island and its inhabitants. It was released for the iPad, iPhone, and iPod Touch on January 9, 2009, and released for Verizon Wireless on September 1, 2010, [2] Android on December 1, 2010, [3] and Windows Phone on December 4, 2010. The Facebook version was released December 23, 2010.
The player takes the role of an omnipotent being who rules over an island and controls everything. The primitive islanders, known as Pygmies, are subject to the player's god powers. These range from benevolent powers, such as giving the islanders a fishing rod, to destructive, such as summoning a hurricane, or simply entertaining, such as levitating the Pygmies. Built-in features of iOS, the iPad, and iPod Touch are used, such as the accelerometer to simulate gravity and earthquakes. Most of these features can be toggled on the game's menu bar. The "March of the Fire Ants" update also added a new feature known as OpenFeint, where players can access chat rooms, leaderboards, achievements, and announcements during gameplay.
One of the game's most notable features is the regular release of updates introducing additional content. The episodes A New Home, Dead Pygmy Walking, and The Pyg Chill added additional islands to the game, which can be toggled from the menu bar. The Fun n' Games until A Pygmy Gets Hurt update added mini-games for consecutive coconut bounces, consecutive shark snaps, underwater skewer, pygmy bowling, and hurricane zaps. The Ooga Jump update added the first crossover minigame, Ooga Jump, which was followed by a Harbor Master crossover. In the Idle Hands 2: Caught With Your Pants Down update more idle features were added to the Pygmies when they are not in use. Also, Buddy Challenges were implemented with OpenFeint. In the Good Will Haunting update, a downloadable content (DLC) store was added with changeable skins for the T-Rex. Other packs, such as the Halloween, holiday, and alien themes, have since been added.
Pocket God was updated often with new 'episodes', a themed update that adds new features to the Pocket God world, such as new islands, items, or minigames. In December 2012, it was announced Episode 47: Apocalypse Ow! would be the game's final major update. [5]
A bonus episode, Episode 48: Call of Booty, released to the App Store on November 27, 2014. [6]
A Facebook version of Pocket God was released on December 23, 2010, citing more features from the mobile versions of the game. It was co-developed by Frima studio and discontinued in 2015.

Pocket God was released for iOS devices on January 9, 2009. According to the official Pocket God blog, Bolt Creative have "about ten ideas for standalone Pocket God games". They also noted that even if sequels are developed, Pocket God will still receive updates, but at a slower rate. A digital comic-book tie-in is currently being published; the first issue was released on August 3, 2010, through iVerse and Ape Entertainment. [7]
Pocket God is slowly being released on non-Apple platforms. A version was released for Verizon Wireless cellphones on September 1, 2010. [2] An Android port (published by ngmoco) was released on December 1, 2010. [8] A Facebook port (co-developed by Frima studio) moved to closed Beta on the same day.
Pocket God is also on Windows Phone. [3] The creators stated that they would be releasing Pocket God: Journey to Uranus exclusively for the iPad, and that it would include minigames allowing the pygmies to travel to other planets, [9] it was scheduled for release in Fall 2010, but was since delayed. According to the developers regularly updated blog, [10] the app was released on December 16, 2010. JTU has since been updated in the episodic style of Pocket God, and now features four areas (Earth, space, Uranus, Mercury). In Episode 4: Quantum Entanglement, JTU was made compatible with all iOS devices.
Pocket God has received positive reviews. iTunes App Reviews gave the game 5 out of 5 stars. [11] AppStruck gave the game 5 out of 5 stars referring to the game as "endlessly amusing and is an easy way to completely lose track of time". [12] iPhone App Reviews gave the updated version of the game 4.8 out of 5 [13] having given the original version 3.92 out of 5. [14] Appvee gave the game 4 out of 5 after episode 11 was released, having originally given the game 1.8 out of 5. [15]
The game was subject to controversy when some Pacific Islanders and anthropologists protested to Apple Inc. claiming the game was racist. [16] [17] [18] The game's creators defended the game, saying "it depicts no specific race or nationality". Pocket God programmer Dave Castelnuovo got in touch with one of the original Pacific Islanders and came up with some compromises: The islanders would be called Oogs instead of Pygmies, and the Moai statue would be replaced with a statue of an Octopus God. [19] On May 27, 2009, Castelnuovo announced that the characters would no longer be called Oogs, as 'Pygmies' was a more suitable name, and did not actually cause any friction between Pacific Islanders. As part of the effort to promote Pocket God, the developers engaged in cross-promotion with a number of other developers. This promotion saw a number of updates where new themed features were added to "Pocket God" and in return the related apps added Pocket God themed updates.
Three apps have featured the game as a direct result of cross-promotion. The addition of Doodler to Pocket God resulted in a new version of Doodle Jump being released on May 22, 2009, which allowed users to play as a Pygmy from Pocket God. To unlock the Pygmy, players must change the high score name to one of the characters from Pocket God: Ooga, Booga, Nooby, Dooby, Klik or Klak. [21]
The second crossover was with Harbor Master on August 8, 2009, where Pygmies replaced the normal boats in the path drawing game. [22]
The final cross promotion saw a new test added to "Moron Test" with a Pocket God theme to it, which characters from the Moron Test were featured on a new island and minigame within the Pocket God universe.
There are reports of seeing a pygmy in the app uggles as a playable character.
Two other apps have featured the famous Pocket God characters within their games. The Creeps released an update allowing pygmies as characters. [23] Also Trenches added to their "Zombie Horde" mode by allowing Zombie Pygmies to replace the Zombie Germans as the antagonists within the game. [24]
Announced in 2015 was the spin-off game Pocket God vs Desert Ashes. [25]
Pocket Tanks, often abbreviated as PTanks or simply as PT, is a 1- and 2-player computer game and mobile game developed by Michael P. Welch from Blitwise Productions. It was originally released for Windows and Mac OS X in 2001 and was later released for iOS in 2009 and Android in 2012. It is available as shareware as well as a premium version known as Pocket Tanks Deluxe, which includes the content from all 30 expansion packs.
Internet Explorer Mobile was a mobile version of Internet Explorer developed by Microsoft, based on versions of the MSHTML (Trident) layout engine. IE Mobile comes loaded by default with Windows Phone and Windows CE. Later versions of Internet Explorer Mobile are based on the desktop version of Internet Explorer. Edgeworks Entertainment is a machinima and new media production company founded by Alexander Winn and cofounded by Lacey Hannan. The company first gained recognition for their machinima series including The Codex Series, Vox Populi, Forsaken and Radical. Edgeworks is also known for hit terraforming game TerraGenesis, which has over 20 million downloads.
Sonic Jump is a 2005 vertical platform game developed by AirPlay and Sonic Team, and published by Sega for the digital distribution service Sonic Cafe, initially only available in Japan for mobile phones before being ported to iOS and Android and released in other regions in 2007. Unlike other games in the series, Sonic Jump doesn't involve running from left to right, but instead, Sonic automatically jumps up the screen, with the player needing to tilt the phone to move him from left to right. The original game's graphical style is based on the Sonic Advance series, which had ended shortly before Jump's release.
Fieldrunners is a tower defense video game developed for several platforms. Originally released on 1 October 2008 as an exclusive iOS title, the game was later ported to Nintendo DSi, PlayStation Portable, PlayStation 3, and mobile phones. It was released on the Android platform in July 2011, on the Amazon Appstore and Android Market, then on 25 October, where it was ported to HTML5 by Gradient Studios and Bocoup and released on the Chrome Web Store with the first level, Grasslands, playable for free. It is the first release of developer Subatomic Studios.
Flight Control is a time management video game for iOS, Wii, Nintendo DS, Android, and Windows Phone 7 developed by Firemint and first released for iOS on March 5, 2009. The app was a number one bestseller on the App Store in 19 countries simultaneously on April 6, 2009 and has sold over 3.8 million copies. The development and publishing of Flight Control on non-Apple mobile phones is being handled by Namco under license.
Zenonia is an action role-playing game created, developed, and published by Gamevil for iOS, Android, PlayStation Portable, Nintendo DSi, Zeebo and Windows Mobile. It was released on the App Store on May 24, 2009 and on the Google Play Store on March 27, 2010. It was released for the PlayStation Portable on October 12, 2010.
Doodle Jump is a 2009 platformer video game developed and published by Igor and Marko Pušenjak, who make up the Croatian studio Lima Sky. The game was released for Windows Phone, iOS, BlackBerry, Android, Java Mobile, Nokia Symbian, and Xbox 360 for the Kinect. It was released worldwide for iOS on April 6, 2009, Android and Blackberry on March 2, 2010, Symbian on May 1, 2010, Windows Phone 7 on June 1, 2011, the iPad on September 1, 2011, and Windows Phone 8 on August 21, 2013. Since its release, the game has been generally well received.
The Moron Test is a mobile brain teasing game developed and published by American studio DistinctDev, Inc. for the iOS and Android platforms, and is one of the best selling iPhone applications of all-time. The Moron Test was initially released on April 20, 2009 for iOS and was released for Android on May 13, 2010. Its format is inspired by IQ tests that pose seemingly simple questions in order to extrapolate broad indices of intelligence. Upon its initial release on iTunes, The Moron Test became the #1 top selling app in the U.S. App Store. The app has repeatedly reached a Top 10 Overall ranking and has been in the Top 100 Overall apps for over 450 consecutive days in the US App Store. On September 10, 2010, DistinctDev released The Moron Test: Section 1, a free version of the game on iOS, offering the "Old School" section. Two months after the Android platform launch, the free version received more than 700,000 downloads, the paid version became the 9th most downloaded paid game with over 65,000 downloads on the Android market. The Moron Test has seven sections: Old School, Late Registration, Winter Break, Food Fight, Skip Day, Tricky Treat, and Ooga School. The latest iOS version of includes an in-app purchase for the Extra Credit section, Flying Colors.
Bloons Tower Defense is a series of tower defense games under the Bloons series created and produced by Ninja Kiwi. The game was initially developed as a browser game, built upon the Adobe Flash platform and released in mid 2007. Later games in the series expanded to support various mobile platforms, including Android, iOS, Windows Phone, PlayStation Portable, Nintendo DSi, Windows, Linux and MacOS. Games in the Bloons series older than Bloons TD 6 are available through the Ninja Kiwi Archive on Steam.
MiKandi is a defunct mobile adult software applications store. Developed by MiKandi LLC, a formerly Seattle-based company, MiKandi was the world's first mobile porn app store. The store sought to get around restrictions placed on adult content by Apple Inc. by releasing the third-party application store on Google's Android open-source operating system and offering an HTML5 web-based application for all touch devices.
N.O.V.A. Near Orbit Vanguard Alliance is an action-adventure video game for the iPad and other Apple products made for Apple by Gameloft. It was released on December 17, 2009, for iOS, WebOS and is one of the games containing the Gameloft Live online gaming service. It was later released on the PlayStation Network for the PlayStation Portable and PlayStation 3 on December 21, 2010, just five days after the release of N.O.V.A. 2. N.O.V.A Legacy, a remaster of the original N.O.V.A. developed by Gameloft Madrid, was also released for Android on the Google Play Store in 2017 and on iOS App Store in 2018.

Angry Birds, also retrospectively known as Angry Birds Classic, is a 2009 physics-based casual puzzle video game developed by Finnish video game developer Rovio Entertainment, and the first of the Angry Birds series. Inspired primarily by a sketch of stylized wingless birds, the game was originally released for iOS and Maemo mobile devices starting in December 2009, utlising touchscreen controls. By October 2010, 12 million copies of the game had been purchased from the Apple App Store and Nokia Ovi Store, prompting Rovio to port Angry Birds to various other mobile devices as well as to home game consoles, personal computers and others by 2011.
Pocket Frogs is a life simulation video game developed and published by NimbleBit for the iOS App Store and Google Play Store. It was released as a free game with additional in-app purchases. The aim is to complete the 'Froggydex' by earning money to breed and sell virtual frogs.

Angry Birds Rio was a 2011 puzzle video game developed and published by Rovio Entertainment, and is the third installment in the Angry Birds series. The game was released on March 22, 2011 and promoted as a marketing tie-in with the 20th Century Fox and Blue Sky Studios co-produced animated film Rio. While utilizing the same basic gameplay as Angry Birds (2009), Angry Birds Rio added a number of new elements, most notably the first use of boss levels. Angry Birds Rio was discontinued on February 3, 2020 along with Angry Birds Star Wars (2012), and Angry Birds Star Wars II (2013), with the games also being delisted from Google Play and the iOS App Store.
Sonic Dash is a 2013 endless runner mobile game developed by Hardlight and published by Japanese game studio Sega. It is Hardlight's second Sonic the Hedgehog game, the first being 2012's Sonic Jump. The game was released in March 2013 for iOS, November 2013 for Android, and December 2014 for Windows Phone and Windows, along with an arcade release in November 2015 as Sonic Dash Extreme. It was initially released as a paid application, but was made free-to-play a month after its iOS release.
Hugo Troll Race is a free-to-play endless runner video game in the Hugo franchise, developed by Danish studio Hugo Games and published by Krea Medie in 2012. Its sequel and spin-off were released in 2015.
