Poland competed at the 2009 World Championships in Athletics from 15 to 23 August. A team of over 40 athletes was announced in preparation for the competition. [1] Selected athletes have achieved one of the competition's qualifying standards. The squad includes both Polish athletes who were 2008 Olympics medalists: Tomasz Majewski (gold at shot put and 2009 world leaders), [2] and Piotr Małachowski (silver at discus throw). Anna Rogowska (third in 2004 Olympics at pole vault) and Szymon Ziółkowski (2000 Olympic champion in the hammer throw) also participated in the Championships. In the women's hammer throw, Anita Włodarczyk of Poland won gold medal with a distance of 77,96m, which is a new world record.

Contents

Poland won 8 medals in the Championships and was 4th rank among all participating countries Medal Table. It is the best result of Poland of all World Championships in Athletics.

Balázs Kiss is a retired Hungarian hammer thrower. He is the 1996 Olympic champion and the 1998 European Championships silver medalist, and has two fourth places from World Championships. His personal best throw was 83.00 metres, achieved during the 1998 Golden League circuit.

The men's hammer throw was a track and field athletics event held as part of the Athletics at the 1904 Summer Olympics programme. It was the second time the event was held. The competition was held on Monday, August 29, 1904. Six athletes from the United States competed. John Flanagan, the reigning champion, defended his gold medal and set a new Olympic record. John DeWitt took silver and Ralph Rose bronze. It was the second consecutive medal sweep for the United States in the event. Flanagan was the first man to earn multiple medals in the event; he would finish with three consecutive victories, a record not matched by anyone in the hammer throw.

Robert 'Bob' Boyd Weir is a male retired English athlete, best known as a discus thrower, who was a twelve-time national champion. Weir also achieved success in hammer throw, winning Commonwealth Games gold in 1982, and competed in strongman competitions.

The eight highest-ranked competitors after three rounds qualified for the final three throws to decide the medals. The qualification mark was set at 72.00 metres.

Kibwé Johnson is an American Olympic track and field athlete who specializes in the hammer throw. He has represented his country at the World Championships in Athletics three times. Competed in the 2012 London Olympics where he made the final and finished 9th. No American had made the final since 1996. Johnson competed in 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics.

Ivan Tsikhan of Belarus took silver, the 14th man to win multiple medals in the event in adding to his 2008 bronze. Bronze went to Wojciech Nowicki of Poland, the nation's first medal in the event since 2000.

Scott Neilson is a Canadian former track and field athlete who competed in the hammer throw. His personal best was 72.72 m, set in Seattle on 1 April 1978.

Algeria has competed at the IAAF World Athletics Championships on eighteen occasions, sending a delegation to every event since the 1983 edition. Its competing country code is ALG. The country has won six gold medals, two silver medals and three bronze medals at the competition. All eleven of its medals come from six athletes in distance track events. The competition format typically has one qualifying round contested by two groups of athletes, with all those clearing the automatic qualifying distance or placing in top twelve overall advancing to the final round.

Camryn Rogers is a Canadian athlete specializing in the hammer throw. She is the reigning Olympic and World champion in that discipline, in both cases the first Canadian woman to win that title, and only the second Canadian woman to win gold at the World Athletics Championships in any discipline. Her Olympic gold medal was the first for a Canadian woman in track and field in 96 years.
