Polanie II , also known as KnightShift and Once Upon a Knight, is a real-time strategy and role-playing video game hybrid developed by Reality Pump Studios and released by Topware Interactive for the PC Windows and OS X in 2003. [1] The game is a follow-up to Polanie , published by USER in 1996. [2] KnightShift (Director's Cut Special Edition) was released for Windows later in 2003.

Real-time strategy (RTS) is a sub-genre of strategy video games in which the game does not progress incrementally in turns. This is distinguished from turn-based strategy (TBS), in which all players take turns when playing.

A role-playing video game is a video game genre where the player controls the actions of a character immersed in some well-defined world. Many role-playing video games have origins in tabletop role-playing games and use much of the same terminology, settings and game mechanics. Other major similarities with pen-and-paper games include developed story-telling and narrative elements, player character development, complexity, as well as replayability and immersion. The electronic medium removes the necessity for a gamemaster and increases combat resolution speed. RPGs have evolved from simple text-based console-window games into visually rich 3D experiences.

A sequel, Polanie 3 or KnightShift 2: Curse of Souls, was announced in 2004. [3] [4] A playable demo was already available in 2004, with plans for a release in 2005. It was supposed to be a computer rpg-type game, abandoning its real-time strategy roots. [5] [6] The game was supposed to be available for the PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 platforms. [7] [8] The game was never released under that name. [4] However, it eventually lost all of its RTS elements and morphed into a computer role-playing game released in 2007 as Two Worlds . [9]
