Polaris is an unincorporated community in Beaverhead County, Montana, United States. [1] Polaris has a post office with a ZIP code 59746. [2] Polaris lies in the Grasshopper Valley, along the Pioneer Mountain Scenic Byway, southeast of Wisdom. This community takes its name from the Polaris Mine, which operated as a silver mine from 1885 until 1922. [3]

Attractions to the Polaris area include Maverick Mountain Ski Area, Montana High Country Tours Lodge, the Grasshopper Inn, Elkhorn Hotsprings, Bannack State Park, and Crystal Park. [4] Polaris is minutes from blue ribbon trout streams, hundreds of snowmobile and cross-country ski trails, and trail heads to mountain lakes.

Hay, horse, and cattle production are among the major industries in Polaris, along with a rise in tourism and recreation. Originally, Polaris was a mining town with a general store, post office, and saloon. Hundreds of miners lived north of Polaris and worked the Elkhorn Mine and Coolidge Mine, among other smaller mines. Mail delivered to the Grasshopper Valley was processed at the Polaris post office and still is today.

Climate

According to the Köppen Climate Classification system, Polaris has a semi-arid climate, abbreviated "BSk" on climate maps. [5] The average snowfall is 49 inches.

Education

Polaris provides elementary education. [6] High school is at Beaverhead County High School.

The Beaverhead–Deerlodge National Forest is the largest of the National Forests in Montana, United States. Covering 3.36 million acres (13,600 km2), the forest is broken into nine separate sections and stretches across eight counties in the southwestern area of the state. President Theodore Roosevelt named the two forests in 1908 and they were merged in 1996. Forest headquarters are located in Dillon, Montana. In Roosevelt's original legislation, the Deerlodge National Forest was called the Big Hole Forest Reserve. He created this reserve because the Anaconda Copper Mining Company, based in Butte, Montana, had begun to clearcut the upper Big Hole River watershed. The subsequent erosion, exacerbated by smoke pollution from the Anaconda smelter, was devastating the region. Maverick Mountain is a census-designated place (CDP) in Beaverhead County, Montana, United States, consisting of residences in the valley of Grasshopper Creek at the base of Maverick Mountain Ski Area. It is in the northern part of the county, along the Pioneer Mountains Scenic Byway, 4 miles (6 km) north of Polaris, the nearest post office, and 35 miles (56 km) northwest of Interstate 15 at Dillon, the Beaverhead county seat. Maverick Mountain, for which the CDP and the ski area are named, rises to a summit elevation of 8,722 feet (2,658 m) to the northwest. The scenic byway continues north 34 miles (55 km) to the town of Wise River in the Big Hole River valley.
