Explanatory notes

  1. Abdul Fattah Ismail was critiqued by his opponent at an emergency session of YSP Central Committee on 20 April 1980. Not having the numbers in either the politburo or the Central Committee, Ismail voluntarily resigned from all his offices, was elected honorary chairman of the YSP Central Committee, and was sent into exile in the Soviet Union. [1]
  2. Muhammad Salih Mutia was an active participant in the removal of Abdul Fattah Ismail as YSP general secretary in April 1980, but by "late summer 1981" he had apparently been put under house arrest. This was not made public until February 1981. [5]
