Engracia Domingos da Silva [3] (born 10 April 1992), known professionally as Pongo, is an Angolan-Portuguese singer and songwriter.
Born in Luanda, Angola, Pongo immigrated with her family to Lisboa, Portugal, escaping from the Angolan civil war. [4] In the new country, her mother worked as a maid and her father worked as a construction laborer. She lived in a shelter room for five years with the other four members of her family, sharing a bed with her two sisters. [5]
Her father was very strict and wouldn't let Pongo and her sisters have a social life. Finding it hard to endure these difficulties, at 12 years old she threw herself from the seventh floor of the building where she lived, sustaining injuries and breaking a leg. During the initial phases of her recovery, she couldn't walk and her father nicknamed her M'Pongo Love, after the name of a Congolese singer very well known in Angola who had endured a period where she couldn't walk because of an unsuccessful polio treatment. On her way to one of the physical therapy sessions across the city, in a neighborhood with African immigrants, Pongo saw for the first time the kuduro group Denon Squad performing on the street. After her recovery, she started dancing with the group and singing rap. She adopted the stage name Pongolove, later abbreviated to Pongo. [7]
Pongo's participation in Denon Squad led her to meet Buraka Som Sistema. She performed on a stage for the first time with them in 2008 in the Music Box concert venue in Lisbon. In the same year, she became known in Portugal for the song "Kalemba (Wegue Wegue)", written and recorded by her. This song was part of the soundtracks of the games Need for Speed: Shift and FIFA 10, and was extensively played on YouTube, with over ten million views. [2]
Pongo performed with Buraka Som Sistema for two years, then left the group for disputes relating to royalties of the song "Kalemba (Wegue Wegue)". [8] To help raise her sisters, Pongo worked in menial jobs after her father abandoned the family. One day, while working as a housecleaner, she heard "Wegue Wegue" playing on the radio and then decided to return to focusing on her career. [5]
Pongo's career recovery was accelerated in 2018 by the launch of her first EP, "Baia", and in 2019 by her participation in the French festival Fête de la musique, performing in the Élysée, official residence of the French presidency, being hosted by Emmanuel Macron, when she became known as the "Diva of Kuduro". [2] In 2020 she launched her second EP, "Uwa" (a word that means "step" in kimbundo, one of Angola's official languages). In 2020 Pongo won the Music Moves Europe Talent Award. [9]

Portuguese music includes many different styles and genres, as a result of its history. These can be broadly divided into classical music, traditional/folk music and popular music and all of them have produced internationally successful acts, with the country seeing a recent expansion in musical styles, especially in popular music.
The music of Angola has been shaped both by wider musical trends and by the political history of the country. while Angolan music has also influenced the music of the other Lusophone countries and Latin American countries. In turn, the music of Angola was instrumental in creating and reinforcing "angolanidade", the Angolan national identity. The capital and largest city of Angola — Luanda — is home to a diverse group of styles including kazukuta, semba, kizomba and kuduro. Just off the coast of Luanda is Ilha do Cabo, home to an accordion and harmonica-based style of music called rebita.
Kuduro is a type of music and dance from Angola. It is characterized as uptempo, energetic, and danceable. Kuduro was developed in Luanda, Angola in the late 1980s. Producers sampled traditional carnival music like soca and zouk béton from the Caribbean to Angola, techno and accordion playing from Europe and laid this around a fast four-to-the-floor beat.
Buraka Som Sistema was an electronic dance music project from Portugal, specializing in a fusion of techno beats with the African zouk and kuduro genre. It is generally credited with creating the "zouk bass" and "progressive kuduro" variant and has received an MTV European Music Award. In 2015 Buraka Som Sistema said they would be taking an hiatus starting in 2016, and on 1 July 2016 they performed live for the last time in Lisbon.
Black Diamond is Buraka Som Sistema's second album which was released in 2008. It was released in the United States on April 7, 2009.

"Danza Kuduro" is a Spanish/Portuguese song by Puerto Rican recording artist Don Omar and Portuguese–French singer Lucenzo from Don Omar's collaborative album Meet the Orphans. The song is an adaptation of Lucenzo's "Vem Dançar Kuduro", a Portuguese/English song. "Danza Kuduro" was released as the lead single from the album on August 15, 2010, through Machete, VI. It became a hit in most Latin American countries, and eventually all over Europe. "Danza Kuduro" was number one on the Hot Latin Songs, giving Don Omar his second US Billboard Hot Latin Songs number-one hit and Lucenzo his first. A remake of the song is also featured in the 2011 movie Fast Five as an ending song and is on the film's soundtrack album. "Danza Kuduro" ended up being the most successful song with a significant number of verses in European Portuguese of the 2010s. The track ranked 43 on Rolling Stone`s Greatest Latin Pop Songs.
"Bang" is a song and single by rapper/dancer Rye Rye featuring M.I.A. It was recorded in 2008 and appears on the deluxe version of her 2012 album Go! Pop! Bang!. It was released in 2009 on N.E.E.T. Recordings and Interscope Records. The single was released first, followed by an EP of remixes, Bang – The Remixes, which includes remixes by Buraka Som Sistema and DJ Sega. The song appears in the films Fast & Furious and Step Up 3D and in the episode "The Sorkin Notes" of the TV-series Entourage.
Rajiv Münch, better known by his stage name Munchi, is a Dutch producer and DJ of Dominican descent, born and raised in Rotterdam, Netherlands. He is credited to have made "the first truly original work" for moombahton, taking "the sound to the next level" and being the originator of moombahcore. Even though Munchi is credited mainly for moombahton, it was his versatility and unique production style that brought him into public attention. Notably producing a wide selection of genres and incorporating these elements in his music. This is best represented in the Murda Sound debut on T&A Records, consisting of a wide variety of genres doing Munchi's versatility justice. In December 2010 Munchi was featured with 3 tracks on M.I.A.'s Vicki Leekx mixtape, and in July 2012 on Azealia Banks' Fantasea mixtape, with the track "Esta Noche."

"Internet Connection" is a song by British recording artist M.I.A. from the deluxe edition of her third studio album, Maya (2010). The track was written and produced by Maya "M.I.A." Arulpragasam, and Blaqstarr. Originally titled "I'm Down Like Your Internet Connection", the song was inspired by the issues M.I.A. had with her own Internet connection and a lengthy phone call with Verizon tech support. She eventually asked one of the workers to sing the lyrics down the phone, and used the recording in the final track. The song was released as the seventh and final single from the album, on 11 January 2011 as a digital download, under license to XL Recordings and exclusive license to Interscope in the USA. The EP featured remixes by artists including Flux Pavilion, Buraka Som Sistema, Huoratron and Tony Senghore.
Enchufada is a Portuguese Independent Record Label based in Lisbon. It was founded in 2006 by Buraka Som Sistema band members Branko and Kalaf Ângelo, serving as a creative platform from which to release their early musical experiments fusing Angolan kuduro and European electronic music genres, an aesthetic that defined the early years of the imprint and set the stylistic tone for its future releases.
