History

The race has assumed the history of the Port Adelaide Cup after the closure of Cheltenham Park Racecourse in 2009.

The race was the principal long distance race of the Port Adelaide Racing Club. It was held initially in the Christmas holiday period. However, after the demise of the club in 1975 and later the closure of the track where the race was predominantly held the race had lost its prestige when it was downgraded to a Listed race in 2003. [2] The current SAJC has had less stability with the scheduling of the race having it run in February several times in the last 10 years.[ when? ][ citation needed ]

King's Cup / Queen's Cup

The King's Cup was a national race, first run in 1927 in Flemington Racecourse, Melbourne, in, inaugurated by the King of the United Kingdom and Dominions, King George V. [39] The conditions of the race stated that the race should be run in a different state in rotation each year, and hosted by the state's jockey club. The rotation was to be hosted in this order: Victoria, New South Wales, Queensland, South Australia, Western Australia, and Tasmania, with the first race in Victoria. The first SAJC King's Cup race was staged in 1930, during the 1930 Adelaide Cup Carnival, held in May at the time, when it was won by Australian champion Phar Lap. [40] [41] [42]

In 1936 Donaster won the race. [43] After the World War II the race was renewed in 1948 when Valcurl was victorious. [44]

The cup was renamed Queen's Cup in 1954, when it was run by the SAJC at Morphettville in the presence of the Queen and Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, and won by Sir Coral. [45] [46]

In 1990, the Queen's Cup at Cheltenham Racecourse was referred to as "a new race in Adelaide called the Queen's Cup". [47] In 1990, 2003, and 2008 the race was held at Cheltenham Park. [48] The 1996 December race was run over a distance of 2,000 m (1.2 mi) [49] and in 2008 the distance was 2,414 m (1.500 mi). [50]

As of 2022 the last winner of the Queen's Cup in Adelaide was Tayllaroo in 2008. [51] [52]
