Port Colborne High School, commonly known as Port High, is a high school in Port Colborne, just north of the eastern edge of Lake Erie, Ontario, Canada. It is part of the District School Board of Niagara and has been serving the communities of Wainfleet and Port Colborne since the 1920s. [1] The school serves students from communities in Wainfleet, Dunnville, Dain City, and Port Colborne. [2]

Port High is a composite high school from which students successfully graduate to attend universities and colleges across Canada. The school offers 5 Specialist High Skills Major programs in Arts and Culture, Manufacturing, Hospitality and Tourism, Health and Wellness and Automotive Technology. The school also offers a specialty cosmetology program with a full service salon on campus. Students have the opportunity to participate in a full range of sporting and cultural activities.

Port High has a highly respected technology department. The school also offers a wide range of academic and arts programs that prepare students for university, college, and the world of work. The school has a student population of just under 600 students.

History

The History of Port Colborne High School dates back to 1920, when the town of Port Colborne became a focal point of many new industries. The arrival of the International Nickel Company of Canada (INCO) in 1918, the prospering businesses of Canada Furnace, Maple Leaf Mills and Canada Cement along with the building of the fourth Welland Canal brought many new residents and their families to the town. A need for an educational institution was realized. In 1920, the Port Colborne School Board purchased four acres of land from Dewitt Carter on the corner of Steele and Elgin Streets. Building started in 1920 and in 1921 the Port Colborne Continuation School opened its doors for the first time with four classrooms, a science lab, and a gymnasium (currently the theatre). This school offered students in Port Colborne grades 9-11. If a student wanted to further their education after grade 11 they needed to travel to Welland, via trolley, to complete their fourth and fifth terms (Grade 12 and 13).

In 1922, an application was made to the Ontario Government for High School status, which was granted in 1923. The first graduates of Port High received their diplomas on December 20, 1923. The school board then consisted of 6 members, and there were only 5 teachers at Port High to teach 100 students.

In 1926, the first of many additions were built to accommodate the growing student population by adding four classrooms to the back of the existing building. Since that time there have been four other major renovations; in 1938, 6 classes, a gym, a shop class, and a home economics class room was added; in the 1960s another gym, science classes and a technical wing was built; in 1989 saw the improvement of the library and main office area, as well as many stairwells closed to make the building more energy efficient; and the latest addition being the new entrance way and foyer built in 2008.

During the late 1960s, the school housed over 1600 students with 90 teachers. The school was bursting at the seams and a new school for Port Colborne was needed. A shift system was put into place with Port High students attending school in the morning and future Lockview Park students attending in the afternoon. In February 1970 the new school, located on Janet Street, opened its doors to over 600 students. Many of these students would return to Port High for grade 13 since Lockview was had only grades 9-12.

Welland Canal

The Welland Canal is a ship canal in Ontario, Canada, connecting Lake Ontario and Lake Erie. It forms a key section of the St. Lawrence Seaway and Great Lakes Waterway. Traversing the Niagara Peninsula from Port Weller in St. Catharines to Port Colborne, it enables ships to ascend and descend the Niagara Escarpment and bypass Niagara Falls. The name currently refers to the fourth such canal, three earlier and much smaller canals servicing the same route are also known as the Welland.

King's Highway 58, commonly referred to as Highway 58, is a provincially maintained highway in the Canadian province of Ontario. The route is divided into two segments with a combined length of 15.5 km (9.6 mi). The southern segment travels from Niagara Regional Road 3, formerly Highway 3, in Port Colborne, to the Highway 58A junction in the southern end of Welland, a distance of 7.2 km (4.5 mi). The northern segment begins at Highway 20 near Allanburg and travels north and west to a large junction with Highway 406 at the St. Catharines – Thorold boundary, a distance of 8.3 km (5.2 mi). King's Highway 3, commonly referred to as Highway 3, is a provincially maintained highway in the Canadian province of Ontario which travels parallel to the northern shoreline of Lake Erie. It has three segments, the first of which travels from the Ambassador Bridge in Windsor to Highway 77 in Leamington. The second portion begins at Talbotville Royal outside of St. Thomas at Highway 4, and travels to the western city limits of Port Colborne. The road is regionally maintained within Port Colborne as Niagara Regional Road 3, but regains its provincial designation at Highway 140. Its third and final terminus is at Edgewood Park, within the Fort Erie town limits. From there, the road continues as Niagara Regional Road 3 to the Peace Bridge, where drivers can cross to the United States. The total length of Highway 3 is 259.2 km (161.1 mi), consisting of 50.2 km (31.2 mi) from Windsor to Leamington, 187.9 km (116.8 mi) from Talbotville Royal to Port Colborne and 21.1 km (13.1 mi) from Port Colborne to Edgewood Park.

Welland Centennial Secondary School (WCSS) is a public high school located in Welland, Ontario, Canada. It was founded in 1966 and offers Secondary School education for grades nine to twelve, as well as the extended French certificate program. The school mascot is the Cougar and the school colours are Blue, Orange and White . Welland Centennial Secondary School has varsity Soccer, as well as Senior and Junior Football, which the Junior Football team won a championship in 2013 with Derek Peters being the mvp for that game; Basketball, Curling, Volleyball, Badminton, and Tennis. Welland Centennial also offers intramural programs during lunch hours. WCSS is well known for their arts programs, including Drama, Dance, Vocal Music and Instrumental Music. The drama department is responsible for a large-scale dramatic performance each year. The performances, which include Canadian plays and broadway musicals, are often accompanied by the instrumental departments accompaniment band. Additionally, the school has two instrumental bands: The Cats Band which is the Jazz band of the school is a Jazz big-band with a full vocal section; and The Concert Band is a classic concert band with Woodwind, Brass, Percussion and small String sections. The school is home to students from around southern Niagara because of the extended French program. These students are transported to and from school, by bus, as far as Wainfleet and Port Colborne.
