Porter Block is an American, New York-based power pop band, formed by Peter Block and Caleb Sherman. Since 2006, the band has released five albums and one EP, including several collaborations with Mike Viola. [1]
Porter Block formed in the early 2000s. Peter Block met Caleb Sherman in 2003 while playing in the band Tripasaurus vs. Blockhead. During recording sessions at the Engine Room Audio in New York City, Block and Sherman formed Porter Block. The group's influences drew from 1960s British Invasion bands to ‘70s acts such as Neil Young and The Eagles. [2]
Porter Block's debut album, Suburban Sprawl, was released in 2006 by Engine Room Recordings, a label founded by Block and Engine Room Audio owner Mark Christensen. [3] All Music Guide wrote, "Buoyant pop tunes filled with harmonies and hooks … a promising start." [4]
In 2007, the band released the Solitary Hotel EP and contributed two songs to the first volume of the Guilt By Association covers compilation series. In 2008, Porter Block released their second full-length album, Off Our Shoulders. PopMatters called it "a pleasantly infectious 36-minute spread of over 10 catchy pop missives that wash over you like a cool summer breeze without ever outstaying their welcome." [5]
The band's third full-length, Pueblo A Go Go, was released in February 2009. It was self-produced by Block, with Sherman adding performance and mixing credits. Steve Holley, whose resume includes Paul McCartney, Elton John, and Ian Hunter's Rant Band, guested on drums. Guitarist Garrett Alarcon lent a hand both in the studio and on the live dates that followed with Mike Doughty. [2]
Touring partners from 2006 to 2009 included Deep Blue Something, Mike Viola, The Samples, and Mike Doughty.
When Sherman moved his studio to Nashville in 2009, Block reached out to 11 songwriters he admired, some he had never met, and invited them to his studio near the Gowanus Canal in Brooklyn. The songwriting group included Terry Radigan, Casey Shea, Jeff Jacobson, and Angela McCluskey. The resulting album was called The Gowanus Yacht Club, released August 2009. Short And Sweet NYC called it, "A fine blend of well-crafted songs that is a summation of a rather interesting songwriting ‘experiment’." [6]
In 2010, Porter Block released Peter Block, a solo-centric album dealing with subjects of illness and divorce. Mike Viola produced, played on and co-wrote the album, which also featured collaborations with Tracy Bonham, Dan Miller of They Might Be Giants, Michael Flynn of Slow Runner, and Aaron Lee Tasjan. Edge Media remarked, "Want something that will have you bobbing your head instantly? Peter Block's self-titled fifth album will do it for you." [7]
In April 2010, Peter was diagnosed with a neurological viral condition called Parsonage-Turner Syndrome, which partially-paralyzed his arms and hands. After recovering, Block helped create the non-profit Music and Medicine Program at Weill Cornell Medical College, which encourages its students to continue pursuing music courses and performance while studying medicine. Porter Block will release a new LP, Hard To See Beautiful, on August 8, 2016. Sherman's credits include co-producer, co-writer, vocalist and player. Mike Viola contributed as co-producer, co-writer, acoustic guitarist and backup vocalist on three songs. Hard To See Beautiful was recorded digitally at Sherman's Cygnus Sound studio in Nashville, Tennessee and analog at The Carriage House in Los Angeles, by studio owner/ace engineer and producer, Sheldon Gomberg (Ben Harper, Warpaint, Joseph Arthur). Guitars were performed by Block, Sherman, Viola, Steven Elliot (Dawes, Norah Jones) and Terry Radigan. Keyboard duties were split between Block, Sherman, and Larry Goldings (James Taylor, John Mayer). Drums were done by Brandon Barnes and longtime Elvis Costello collaborator, Pete Thomas. Bass tracks were handled by Sherman and another Costello bandmate, Davey Faragher. [9] A song recorded during the Hard To See Beautiful sessions, a cover of The Kinks’ “Dead End Street,” was released in July 2016.
Hard To See Beautiful was released by Team Mensch, a brand new label started by Peter and fellow music enthusiast, Darren Paltrowitz. [10] Tour dates in support of the album were performed alongside Lucy Woodward and Tim Easton.

The Waterboys are a British-Irish folk rock band formed in London in 1983 by Scottish musician and songwriter Mike Scott. The band's membership, past and present, has been composed mainly of musicians from Scotland, Ireland, Wales and England. Mike Scott has remained the only constant member throughout the band's career. They have explored a number of different styles, but their music is mainly a mix of folk music with rock and roll. They dissolved in 1993 when Scott departed to pursue a solo career. The group reformed in 2000, and continue to release albums and to tour worldwide. Scott emphasises a continuity between the Waterboys and his solo work, saying that "To me there's no difference between Mike Scott and the Waterboys; they both mean the same thing. They mean myself and whoever are my current travelling musical companions."

"Long Hard Road Out of Hell" is a song by American rock band Marilyn Manson and British trip hop band Sneaker Pimps. It was released as a single from the soundtrack to the 1997 motion picture Spawn. An arena rock and gothic rock song, "Long Hard Road Out of Hell" was written by Marilyn Manson and Twiggy Ramirez and produced by Manson and Sean Beavan. Its lyrics are about self-loathing and its title is derived from John Milton's Paradise Lost (1667). After the track was written, the Sneaker Pimps' Kelli Ali was recruited to perform background vocals on it, as the Spawn soundtrack featured collaborations between hard rock artists and electronic music artists. The Sneaker Pimps were dissatisfied with the final track and wanted a remix of it to be released as a single instead; conversely, Manson deemed it a personal favorite.

My Wicked Twin are a Canadian hard rock band from Kitchener, Ontario that formed in 2008. They have their genesis in an earlier band called Brent Doerner's Decibel. Revamped as My Wicked Twin, they now consist of Brent Doerner of Helix and his twin brother Brian Doerner. Brent and Brian Doerner have been playing music together since the age of 8. My Wicked Twin's first album Decibel Music released 2016 with 9 songs. In 2018 the band released Twin Turbo with 8 songs. New in 2020 the band released 3 Engines with 10 songs.

Barely Real is the 1992 extended play (EP) by the American indie rock band Codeine. After releasing their previous album Frigid Stars LP in 1990, the group accepted an invitation from the quartet Bastro to tour in Europe in 1991. Following the tour the group was invited to record a single for Sub Pop Singles Club and attempted to record their follow-up album The White Birch in 1992. The recording sessions proved to be disastrous for the group since it found themselves often with unusable tracks over several different studios. As Codeine could not record enough material for a full-length album, they decided to release what tracks they had as an EP.

Mark Christensen is the studio owner and Chief Mastering Engineer at Engine Room Audio in New York City. Christensen is currently known for mastering, producing, and mixing music in the genres of rock, pop, R&B, classical, and hip hop. Christensen has worked on hundreds of albums, seven of which have been nominated for Grammy Awards as of 2022, with two wins. Christensen has also mastered over thirty Billboard chart top ten hits, and has been involved with 50 projects that have been awarded platinum or gold status by the RIAA. He has mastered material by OK GO, The Killers, 98 Degrees, Boyz II Men, Fergie, Toni Braxton, Talib Kweli, Trey Songz, 50 Cent, Ryan Leslie and The Ting Tings, among others. Along with business partner Scott Lee, Mark opened the New York Audio Academy, an audio engineering school hosted at Engine Room Audio to teach and mentor students on how to record, mix, master and produce records that comply with the music industry's highest standards. Along with Scott Lee and Charles Farrar, he is one of the principals of Bond Street Artist Management. He also periodically chairs and moderates audio engineering panels at music industry events.
Jeremy Porter & The Tucos is an American rock and roll band from Detroit, Michigan. The band is composed of Jeremy Porter, Gabriel Doman, and Jake Riley. Their sound has been described as a combination of classic American powerpop and alternative-country with elements of punk and Rockabilly. The band is often compared to The Replacements, Cheap Trick, Uncle Tupelo and X.

Good Times! is the twelfth studio album by American pop rock band the Monkees. Produced primarily by Adam Schlesinger, the album was recorded to commemorate the band's 50th anniversary. It is the first Monkees studio album since Justus (1996), marking the longest gap between releases to date, and the first since the death of Davy Jones. The album features surviving Monkees Micky Dolenz, Michael Nesmith, and Peter Tork, as well as a posthumous contribution from Jones.
"Semi-Detached, Suburban Mr. James" is a song written by songwriters Geoff Stephens and John Carter, recorded by English pop group Manfred Mann in 1966. Stephens and Carter, who were writers for a publishing company on Denmark Street, London, wrote the song in a style different from their usual compositions, as love was not the prevalent theme. Introduced to the song by producer Shel Talmy, Manfred Mann recorded it at Philips Studio in August 1966. Released by Fontana Records on 21 October 1966, the song was backed by drummer Mike Hugg's composition "Morning After The Party" as the group's second single on the label. Keyboardist Manfred Mann plays the Mellotron on the recording; it was one of the earliest recordings featuring the instrument. Following a trend set by Bob Dylan, the song tackles the subject of life in British middle class suburbia from the perspective of a narrator, who laments the loss of a lover after her marriage to another man.
