Prakash Chandra Sood (born 1928) is a nuclear physicist and professor of nuclear physics from Punjab, India. Sood is known for his tenure at the Banaras Hindu University(BHU), where he served as the head of Physics department in 1969 and later set up the first Van de Graffe Accelerator at BHU. In 2023, he was awarded one of India's highest civilian award Padma Shri for literature and education. [1] [2] [3]

Early life and education

Prakash Chandra Sood was born in 1928 in Jalandhar. He gained B.Sc. and M.Sc. degrees in 1952 from Punjab University. [2]

Career

After education, Sood joined his alma mater Punjab University as a teacher in 1960. In 1965, Sood went to Alberta University, Canada as a visiting professor. In 1968, he was appointed as a scientific officer in India's Bhabha Atomic Research Centre. In 1969, he joined University of California, United States. [2]

In 1969, Sood returned to India to join as the Head of Physics department at the Banaras Hindu University (BHU). Sood continued till 1991 at the BHU, where he trained several generations of nuclear scientists and researchers. He was the founder-director of the first computer centre at BHU and set up the first Van de Graffe Accelerator there among other new facilities. [2] [1]

Awards and honors

Prakash Chandra Sood is a fellow of The National Academy of Sciences (FNASc). [4]

In 2015, he was named the "Senior Most Active Nuclear Scientist of India" by the Department of Atomic Energy, Government of India. [1]

In 2023, Sood was awarded the Padma Shri, one of India's highest civilian awarded by the Government of India. [5] [6] [7]

Valangiman Subramanian Ramamurthy is an Indian nuclear physicist with a broad range of contributions from basic research to Science and Engineering administration.Prof.Ramamurthy started his career in Bhabha Atomic Research Centre, Mumbai in the year 1963. He made important research contributions in the area of nuclear fission, medium energy heavy ion reactions, statistical and thermodynamic properties of nuclei and low energy accelerator applications. During the period 1995-2006, Prof.Ramamurthy was fully involved in Science administration as Secretary to Government of India, Department of Science and Technology, (DST), New Delhi.Other important assignments held by him include Director, Institute of Physics, Bhubaneswar, (1989-1995), DAE Homi Bhabha Chair in the Inter-University Accelerator Centre, New Delhi (2006-2010), and Director of the National Institute of Advanced Studies, Bengaluru (2009-2014). Satinder Kumar Sikka was an Indian nuclear condensed matter physicist, crystallographer and a former Scientific Secretary to the Principal Scientific Advisor of the Government of India. He was known to have played a crucial role, along with Raja Ramanna, Rajagopala Chidambaram and Basanti Dulal Nagchaudhuri, in the design and development of a Hydrogen Bomb by India, which was tested at the Pokhran Test Range in May 1998, under the code name, Operation Shakthi. He was also involved in the Smiling Buddha tests, conducted in 1974. He was awarded the fourth highest civilian award of the Padma Shri, by the Government of India, in 1999.

Dilip Devidas Bhawalkar is an Indian optical physicist and the founder director of the Raja Ramanna Centre for Advanced Technology (CAT), an institute under the Department of Atomic Energy, serving as a centre for higher studies in the fields of lasers and particle accelerators. He is credited with pioneering research in optics and lasers in India and is reported to have contributed in making CAT a partner in the International Linear Collider and Large Hadron Collider experiments of the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN). He is a recipient of the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize, the highest Indian award in science and technology. The Government of India awarded him the fourth highest civilian award of the Padma Shri in 2000.

Tapan Kumar Lahiri is an Indian cardiothoracic surgeon, medical academic and writer from the state of Uttar Pradesh, India. He is a former professor at the Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery of the Institute of Medical Sciences, Banaras Hindu University. The Government of India awarded him the fourth highest civilian honour of the Padma Shri, in 2016, for his contributions to medicine.

Ram Harsh Singh is an Indian practitioner of the Ayurveda system of alternative medicine and the founder vice chancellor of Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan Rajasthan Ayurved University. An Emeritus Professor of Banaras Hindu University and a National Professor of the Ministry of AYUSH of the Government of India, he was conferred with the fourth highest civilian honour of Padma Shri, in 2016.

Onkar Nath Srivastava was an Indian material physicist, an Emeritus professor of Banaras Hindu University and the vice president for India and South Asia of the International Association for Hydrogen Energy, who was known for his contributions to the disciplines of nanotechnology and hydrogen energy. He was the author of two books and over 440 scientific papers and a recipient of several honors including Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize, the highest Indian award in the science and technology categories. The Government of India awarded him the fourth highest civilian honour of the Padma Shri, in 2016, for his contributions to science and engineering.

Maria Christopher Byrski is a polish diplomat, Indologist and Sanskrit scholar and Koodiyattam enthusiast. He was an Ambassador of Poland to India during 1993-96 and was awarded Padma Shri Award, one of the fourth highest civilian awards of India, by the Hon'ble President of India. Amb. Byrski has received the award for his contribution in the field of Literature and Education. He is a recipient of Dr. George Grierson Award of the Central Hindi Directorate of the Government of India in 1995. He has written more than 100 essays on Ancient India's Drama.
