Prakashi Tomar (born 1 January 1937) [1] is an Indian sharpshooter from Johri village of Uttar Pradesh's Baghpat district. She is one of the oldest sharpshooters in the world. [2] She is an icon in the world of shooting. [3] [4] [5] [6]

Personal life

Prakashi Tomar was married to Jai Singh, and their daughter, Seema Tomar, is an international shooter. [7] [8] She is the sister in law of Chandro Tomar. Her granddaughter, Ruby, is deputed as an inspector in Punjab Police, while her second daughter, Rekha, retired as a shooter. [9] She lives in Johri village with her family, and has eight children and twenty grandchildren. [6]

Career

Her career began in 1999 at the age of 62. Her daughter, Seema Tomar, joined the Johri Rifle Club but was hesitant to go alone. Tomar decided to accompany her to the academy as an encouragement. [10] [11] At the academy, coach Farooq Pathan and others were shocked when she shot the target skillfully while trying to show Seema how to hold the gun. Pathan advised her to join the academy, and she has since won over 25 national and international championships. [12]

After two years of training, she entered a competition in which she had to compete against the Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Delhi Police, Dheeraj Singh. Tomar won the competition but the DIG refused to be photographed with her, and commented: "What photograph, I have been humiliated by a woman." [13]

Achievements

During her career, she received many awards, medal and trophies, along with social honours and the Stree Shakti Puraskar award conferred by then President of India Pranab Mukherjee. Tomar was selected in the #100Women_Achievers in India campaign launched in collaboration with Facebook, recognizing women who have contributed to their community and nation building. [14] As such, Tomar was felicitated by President Pranab Mukherjee at Rashtrapati Bhavan on 22 January 2016. She was also felicitated with the Icon Lady award by the Ministry of Women and Child Development in 2017. [15]

Saand Ki Aankh is a 2019 Indian biographical drama film directed by Tushar Hiranandani and produced by Anurag Kashyap, Reliance Entertainment and Nidhi Parmar. The film features Taapsee Pannu, Bhumi Pednekar and Prakash Jha in the lead roles, it also features Pawan Chopra, Kuldeep sareen, Vineet Kumar Singh and Shaad Randhawa in the supporting roles. It is based on the lives of sharpshooters Chandro and Prakashi Tomar. Filming began on 10 February 2019 in Baghpat. Some parts were filmed in Hastinapur and Mawana. It was released on 25 October 2019, coinciding with the Diwali festival.

Shabaash Mithu is a 2022 Indian Hindi-language biographical sports drama film directed by Srijit Mukherji and produced by Viacom18 Studios. The film based on the life of former Test and ODI captain of the India women's national cricket team, Mithali Raj, stars Taapsee Pannu in title role. It chronicles ups and downs and moments of glory of Mithali's life. The film was released on 15 July 2022. It received mixed to positive reviews from critics but was a major box-office disaster, grossing just under a tenth of its budget at the box office.

Afwaah (transl. Rumour) is a 2023 Indian Hindi-language mystery thriller film written and directed by Sudhir Mishra. Produced by Anubhav Sinha and Bhushan Kumar under their respective banners Benaras Media Works and T-Series Films, the film stars Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Bhumi Pednekar and Sumeet Vyas.
