The Punjab Police (abbreviated as PP) is the police agency responsible for law enforcement and investigations within the state of Punjab, India. The Punjab Police has a broad array of specialised services, including the prevention and detection of crime, maintenance of law and order and the enforcement of the Constitution of India. Its headquarters are located at Jan Marg, Chandigarh. On 7 September 2011, Punjab Police started a video conferencing service to redress problems of NRIs. [4] The present DGP of the Punjab Police is Gaurav Yadav. [5] [6] He is an Indian Police Service (IPS) officer of the 1992 batch.
After the Indian independence, the Punjab police was initially responsible for the protection of the Indo-Pakistan border as well as the Indo-Chinese borders before the BSF and ITBP were created. [7]
Punjab is the first state of India to have a Rapid Rural Police Response System which provides City PCR-like response service in rural areas. [8] As the Punjab Police adopted the Computer-Aided-Dispatch (CAD) system for Dial 112 system, 289 four-wheelers and 724 GPS fitted motorcycles are being used. [9] [10]
The Punjab Police has a global positioning system (GPS) tracker and a vehicle registration search device, equipped with highway patrol vehicles. [11]
The Crime Investigation Agency or CIA staff is a special branch of the Punjab Police. The crucial or unsolved criminal cases like smuggling, kidnapping, narcotics, terrorism and murder are handed over to them. This branch of the police is known for its ways of interrogating the culprit who committed the crime.
Punjab is the first state in the country to launch a night policing scheme with an independent cadre, command and structure of a 4,000 strong police force [12] for prevention of offences at night time. [13]
The Punjab Bureau of Investigation was set up in 2019 with 4521 dedicated new posts. [14] [15] [16] Punjab is the first state of India to form a Bureau of Investigation, and separated law and order duties from investigation functions by bringing all investigation staff of 7,772 under a unified wing command. The headquarters of the Punjab Armed Police are located at Jalandhar while the India Reserve Battalions are stationed at Sangrur, Amritsar, Patiala, Ludhiana and Jalandhar and the Punjab Commando Police at Bahadurgarh (Patiala) and S.A.S. Nagar (Mohali).
The Punjab Police was equipped with the .303 rifles, AK-47, AK-56 and 561 Sten guns, but modernisation with advanced weapons is now taking place. [21]
The Punjab Police has 3083 vehicles [3] and patrol cars like the Mahindra Scorpio Getaways [22] [23] and Maruti Gypsys. [24] The PP also has motorcycles equipped with GPS and multi-utility vehicles equipped with GPS and CCTV cameras. [25]
The Punjab Police has a dedicated cybercrime cell to deal with cybercrime in the state headed by an ADGP-ranked police officer, having an office in Phase 4, S.A.S Nagar.
The Punjab Police Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) team was formed in 2010. [26] [27] The officers are usually tasked with protection duties. [28] They are highly trained on the lines of the National Security Guard by Israel's Mossad [29] through private company Athena Security, deployed by the Punjab Government. [30] All the commandos are under 28 years of age, thus making them fit and capable of tasks meant for commandos. Their main work is to fight against any terrorist attack if it occurs in Punjab. They have been trained exclusively in Krav Maga, room intervention, close and open techniques and other secret tactics. [31]

The Punjab SWAT handled counter-terrorism operation at Dina Nagar [33] Police Station in a 2015 Gurdaspur attack [34] [35] by killing all three suspected Lashkar-e-Taiba terrorists. [36]

It has used armed attacks, assassinations and bombings in aid of that goal, and is deemed to be a terrorist entity by various governments. Besides India, it operates in North America and Europe, including Scandinavia.
Tamil Nadu Police is the primary law enforcement agency of the state of Tamil Nadu, India. It is over 150 years old and is the fifth largest state police force in India. Tamil Nadu has a police-population ratio of 1:632. The Director General of the Tamil Nadu police is Shankar Jiwal.
The Khalistan Liberation Force (KLF) is a Khalistani militant organisation operating in the Punjab with prominent members based in Canada, United Kingdom and Pakistan. Its objective is the creation of a sovereign Sikh nation‐state of Khalistan through armed struggle. It is responsible for numerous assassinations, abductions, and military engagements with the Indian Armed Forces during the Insurgency in Punjab. The KLF is also listed as a designated terrorist group by India.
The Bangalore City Police (BCP), officially Bengaluru City Police, is the law-enforcement agency of the South Indian city of Bangalore. The BCP works under the Karnataka State Police jurisdiction and is headed by the Commissioner of Police, Bangalore City, currently B.Dayananda, IPS is the Police Commissioner.
The West Bengal Police is one of the two police forces of the Indian state of West Bengal. The other being the Kolkata Police, which has a separate jurisdiction across Kolkata.
Jathedar Sukhdev Singh Babbar was a was an Indian militant, Sikh separatist, and co-leader of Babbar Khalsa (BK), a Sikh militant organisation involved in the pursuit of creating a Sikh nation named as "Khalistan" and generally believed responsible for the 1985 bombing of Air India Flight 182, although Sukhdev was never named as being involved. BK was founded by Talwinder Singh Parmar, himself, and Amarjit Kaur. He commanded BK continuously for 14 years until he was killed in 1992. He was a member of the AKJ.
The Delhi Police (DP) is the law enforcement agency for the National Capital Territory of Delhi. Delhi Police comes under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India. In 2024, sanctioned strength of Delhi Police was 83,762 (including I.R. Battalions) making it one of the largest metropolitan police forces in the world. Tripura Police is the law enforcement agency of the state of Tripura which organizes and is responsible for policing activities in the state of Tripura, Northeast India. It was formed in the year 1965. Currently Shri Amitabh Ranjan, IPS is DGP of Tripura.

The Bihar Police is the law enforcement agency for the state of Bihar, India, with its headquarters in Patna. It has a sanctioned strength of 111,000 personnel, and as of 2017, employs 77,000 personnel.
The State Armed Police Forces of India are the police units established for dealing with serious law and order situations requiring a higher level of armed expertise than normal. The State Armed Police Forces exist in addition to the ordinary police services of the various states.
Bhai Gurjant Singh Budhsinghwala was a Sikh separatist and the third Jathedar of the Khalistan Liberation Force. Budhsinghwala's organization, KLF, was one of the most active and main Sikh separatist groups during the insurgency in Punjab, India. Budhsinghwala had KLF join the Sohan Singh Panthic Committee and partnered with Khalistan Commando Force (Panjwar), Babbar Khalsa, Bhindranwale Tiger Force (Sangha), and Sikh Student Federation (Bittu) in militant actions.
Patna Police is the police service responsible for law enforcement within Patna district, including the capital city of Patna in an Indian state of Bihar. Patna Police is the largest police service in the state. Its headquarters are at Gandhi Maidan Marg in Patna. The present SSP of Patna Police is Rajeev Mishra (IPS).
Mehal Singh Bhullar is a retired Indian Police Service officer who has served as the director general of the Punjab Police from 2002-2003. He is accredited to lead the anti-insurgency operations in Punjab during the 1980-1990 period and is noted for facilitating unconditional surrender of several militants as Inspector General of Police, Border Range (Punjab). DGP Bhullar has also served in the Indian Army through an emergency (war) service commission with the 13th Punjab Regiment ranking as a Major and has participated in the Sino-Indian War, the Indo-Pakistan war of 1965, and serving in Mizoram counter insurgency operations in the 1960s. His usage of military knowledge in the Punjab anti-insurgency operations gained him valuable recognition. He spent many years of his service with the Punjab Armed Police where he promoted a sports culture. He played a seminal role in the establishment of the P.A.P. complex in Jalandhar along with the Police D.A.V. School of Jalandhar. Bhullar is accredited with facilitating many sportspersons in the Punjab Police including the WWE wrestler Daleep Singh popularly known as Khali. The Punjab Armed Police Indoor stadium in Jalandhar is named in his honour.
On 27 July 2015, three gunmen dressed in army uniforms opened fire on a bus and then attacked the Dina Nagar police station in Gurdaspur district of Punjab, India. The attack resulted in the death of three civilians and four policemen, including a superintendent of police; fifteen others were injured. In addition, five bombs were found planted on the Amritsar–Pathankot line on a rail-bridge near Parmanand railway station, five kilometers from the site of the attack. All three attackers were killed in the operation, which lasted almost 12 hours.
The Punjab Police SWAT Team is the Police Tactical Unit of the Punjab Police.
The COVID-19 pandemic was confirmed to have spread to the Indian state Punjab on 9 March 2020, when an Indian man returning from Italy was tested positive. As of 31 March 2021, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has confirmed a total of 2,39,734 cases, including 6,868 deaths and 2,09,034 recoveries in Punjab. The economy of Punjab has been severely effected by the COVID-19 pandemic.
