Prem Kumar Mani (born 25 July 1953) is a writer, thinker and a political activist from Bihar India. He is well-known for his writings, both fiction and non-fiction, meant for the upliftment of the lower strata of society. He also worked as a journalist in the past. [1] [2] [3] [4]

Early life

Mani was born to Valmiki Mani, a freedom fighter of Bihar. During the initial part of his life, he came in the contact of Buddhist monk Jagdish Kashyap and spent some time getting baptism at Nalanda Mahavihar, a notable Budhhist site. Later, he started his career as a journalist with his first work as Manusmriti, ek pratikriya. Mani is married to Mamta Mani and is a father of three. [1]

Writer

Prem Kumar Mani started writing short stories from 1977. His four short story collections are Andhere Me Akele (1990), Ghas Ke Gehne (1993), Khos Thatha Anya Kahaniyan (2000), and Upsanhar (2000). He also wrote a novel titled Dhalan in 2000. [5] [6]

Thinker

As a social and political thinker Mani has written more than 500 articles on contemporary issues with a deep sense of commitment to social justice. His writings have influenced the people at large in society. [4]

One of his articles titled Why this celebration of Death published in an online magazine named Countercurrents became a topic of intense debate in the Indian Parliament. [7]

He has compiled a work on the life and time of social reformer Jyotiba Phule. [1]

Awards

Mani has been awarded with Srikant verma smriti puruskar for his essays as well as with Vishesh Sahitya Seva Samman (in 1993) by Government of Bihar. [1] He received the first Satrachi Puraskar in 2021 for his writings dedicated to social justice by Satrachi Foundation. [4]

Political career

Mani was nominated to the Bihar legislative council as a member of Janata Dal (United) in 2006 and was ousted from the party for anti-party activities in 2011. In the meantime, he was suspended from the Bihar legislative council by the sitting chairman. Mani however filed a suit challenging the council chairman's jurisdiction over his suspension order. [8] Mani was ousted from the party following the complaint from JD (U) chief whip on the charge of collusion with Upendra Kushwaha, a rebel leader of JD (U) who assumed several high positions in the party. [9] Following Mani's suspension the party suspended him along with other senior leaders such as Lalan Singh for criticising the policy of chief minister Nitish Kumar. [10] Mani was close to Nitish Kumar since the formation of Samata Party and was among the policy formulators of the party until he was ousted in 2011. After joining Rashtriya Janata Dal he was elevated to the position of vice president of the party in 2021 as a part of RJD's Luv-Kush response to those of JD (U)'s. [11]

Mani resigned from all the offices of the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) in 2022, accusing Lalu Prasad Yadav of weakening the organizational structure of the party on various occasions. Prior to his resignation, he was also the editor of the official mouthpiece of RJD. [12] [13]

Upendra Kumar Singh, commonly known as Upendra Kushwaha is an Indian politician, and a former Member of Bihar Legislative Council and Bihar Legislative Assembly. He has also served as Minister of State for Human Resources and Development in the Government of India. Kushwaha is a former Member of Parliament (MP) from the Karakat constituency in Rohtas district, Bihar, and a former member of the Rajya Sabha. He was the leader of Rashtriya Samata Party (RSP), his own party, which merged into Janata Dal (United) (JDU) in 2009. Later, he formed Rashtriya Lok Samata Party (RLSP), which also merged with JD(U) in 2021. On 20 February 2023, Kushwaha resigned from all positions in Janata Dal (United) and formed his own party called Rashtriya Lok Morcha due to his political problems with JD(U) and Nitish Kumar.

Syed Khurshid Mohammad Mohsin was an Indian politician who had served as a Member of the Bihar Legislative Council from May 7, 2018 till his death on January 12, 2019. He was elected by the Members of the Bihar Legislative Assembly with 11 other candidates including Ramchandra Purve.

Ramsewak Singh is an Indian politician and a member of the Janata Dal (United) political party. He served as a Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) in Bihar Legislative Assembly for four consecutive terms. Singh, who represented the Hathua Assembly constituency, became a minister for the first time in the Nitish government in 2019. Prior to this, he had held the post of Chief Whip of the ruling JD(U) for two terms. He is a resident of Asnand Tola village of Uchkagaon block. Sunil Kumar also called Sunil Kushwaha is a former Member of Bihar Legislative Assembly from Sitamarhi Assembly constituency. He was elected to Bihar Assembly from this constituency in 2015 Bihar Assembly elections, as a candidate of Rashtriya Janata Dal. In this election, he defeated the second runner-up, Sunil Kumar Pintu of Bhartiya Janata Party. In the 2015 elections, Kumar secured 81,557 votes, and the margin of his victory was nine percent votes more than his opponent. In 2020 Bihar Assembly elections, Kumar was pitted against Mithilesh Kumar of Bhartiya Janata Party; latter was able to defeat him with a margin of 11,475 votes. It was believed by the poll strategists that Kumar will get the votes from Other Backward Class and Muslims, while his opponent would be supported by Forward Castes. However, in the final counting of votes, Kumar was defeated.

Rajendra Prasad Yadav was an Indian politician who was elected as a member of Bihar Legislative Assembly from Atri constituency in 2005 and 2015 as the candidate of Rashtriya Janata Dal.

Surendra Ram is an Indian politician. He is a member of Rashtriya Janata Dal and a member of the Bihar Legislative Assembly from Garkha Assembly constituency
