Manayunk is a neighborhood in the section of Lower Northwest Philadelphia in the state of Pennsylvania. Located adjacent to the neighborhoods of Roxborough and Wissahickon and also on the banks of the Schuylkill River, Manayunk contains the first canal begun in the United States. The area's name is derived from the language of the Lenape Indians. In 1686-dated papers between William Penn and the Lenape, the Lenape referred to the Schuylkill River as "Manaiung", their word for "river", which literally translates as "place to drink"; the word was later altered and adopted as the town's name.

The Schuylkill Canal, or Schuylkill Navigation, was a system of interconnected canals and slack-water pools along the Schuylkill River in the U.S. state of Pennsylvania, built as a commercial waterway in the early 19th-century. Chartered in 1815, the navigation opened in 1825 to provide transportation and water power. At the time, the river was the least expensive and most efficient method of transporting bulk cargo, and the eastern seaboard cities of the U.S. were experiencing an energy crisis due to deforestation. It fostered the mining of anthracite coal as the major source of industry between Pottsville and eastern markets. Along the tow-paths, mules pulled barges of coal from Port Carbon through the water gaps to Pottsville; locally to the port and markets of Philadelphia; and some then by ship or through additional New Jersey waterways, to New York City markets.
Northwest Philadelphia is a section of the city of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The official boundary is Stenton Avenue to the north, the Schuylkill River to the southwest, Northwestern Avenue to the northwest, Roosevelt Boulevard to the south, and Wister Street and Stenton Avenue to the east. The Manayunk Wall is a steep road in Northwest Philadelphia used by the Philadelphia International Cycling Championship, in 1985, and every year subsequently. The road, a combination of Levering Street and Lyceum Avenue, was located by Jerry Casale and David Chauner and named by Chauner. It begins at Main Street and Levering Street in Manayunk, proceeds on worn stone-paved Cresson Street under the railway, then back on to Levering Street. While most of the Wall is part of Levering Street, it becomes Lyceum Avenue at Tower Street. The steepest section, 17 per cent, starts after a slight left turn at the intersection with Tower Street, and ends at Fleming Street. It becomes less steep as it crosses Manayunk Avenue and enters Roxborough. It nearly flattens and ends at Pechin Street in Roxborough, where news crews broadcast the race. Venice Island is a piece of land formed by the Schuylkill Canal and the Schuylkill River, near Manayunk, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. A mill site in the 19th century, it has recently become the site of a somewhat controversial urban development in a flood plain. The island is now home to the Venice Island Performing Arts and Recreation Center, a multiuse recreational facility with amenities such as an outdoor basketball and volleyball court, children's spraypark, intimate 250 seat capacity theater, as well as a multimillion gallon storage basin used to manage stormwater, carried out by the Philadelphia Water Department. VIPARC is managed by the Philadelphia Parks & Recreation.
Wissahickon is a neighborhood in the section of Lower Northwest Philadelphia in the state of Pennsylvania. Wissahickon is located adjacent to the neighborhoods of Roxborough and Manayunk, and it is bounded by the Wissahickon Valley Park, Ridge Avenue, Hermit Street, and Henry Avenue. The name of the neighborhood comes from the Lenni Lenape word wisameckham, for "catfish creek", a reference to the fish that were once plentiful in the Wissahickon Creek.
Established in 1872 in Philadelphia, the Association for Public Art is the United States' first private, nonprofit public art organization dedicated to integrating public art and urban planning. The Association for Public Art (aPA) commissions, preserves, promotes and interprets public art in Philadelphia, and it is largely due to the work of the aPA that Philadelphia has one of the largest public art collections in the country. The aPA has acquired and commissioned works by many famous sculptors ; supported city planning projects; established an outdoor sculpture conservation program; and sponsored numerous publications, exhibitions, and educational programs. The aPA interprets and preserves more than 200 works of art throughout Philadelphia – working closely with the city's Public Art Office, Fairmount Park, and other organizations and agencies responsible for placing and caring for outdoor sculpture in Philadelphia – and maintains an inventory of all of the city's public art.
Chief Justice John Marshall is a bronze sculpture of John Marshall, by American sculptor William Wetmore Story. It is located at the Supreme Court, 1 First Street, Northeast, Washington, D.C. It was dedicated on May 10, 1884, by Morrison Waite. It was relocated from the West Terrace, of the United States Capitol.
The Ideal Scout, also known as The Boy Scout, is the most famous work by Canadian sculptor R. Tait McKenzie (1867–1938). The original statue stood in front of the Cradle of Liberty Council at 22nd and Winter Streets in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, from 1937 to 2013. Replicas can be found at Boy Scouts of America councils across the United States, as well as at Gilwell Park in London, England, and at Scouts Canada's national office in Ottawa. The Smithsonian American Art Museum's database lists 18 copies.

The Manayunk Canal Towpath is a trail that runs along the Schuylkill River Canal in Manayunk, Pennsylvania, a northwest section of Philadelphia. The Towpath parallels the Manayunk Canal and the Schuylkill River. The Towpath is accessible from Fairmount Park to the East and from the Schuylkill River Trail to the West. As the Towpath runs through heavy industry and rural-like settings, its surface varies between boardwalk, gravel, and pavement. This makes the Towpath ideal for running, walking, and cycling. Fishing in the Schuylkill Canal along the Manayunk Towpath is a favorite past time for visitors and residents alike. Visible along the Towpath are rail lines, old canal locks, ruins of the lock tender's house and old textile mills. Plentiful wildlife thrives along the Manayunk Canal Towpath including many species of birds, fish, turtles, and native plants. The Manayunk Development Corporation is currently organizing a full restoration of the Manayunk Canal; once the restoration is complete, it will be possible for canoes and small boats to sail through the Manayunk Canal Towpath as they make their way down the Schuylkill River.
St. John the Baptist Church is a Roman Catholic church located in the Manayunk section of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The parish was established in 1831 and is the Tenth Oldest Parish in the Archdiocese of Philadelphia. The current Neo Gothic church was dedicated on April 1, 1894 and is the spiritual home for Roman Catholics living in the Manayunk, Roxborough, and Wissahickon neighborhoods of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
