Prime Media Holdings, Inc. (PMHI, commonly known as Prime Media) is a Philippine investment holding company based in Makati. Originally founded on February 6, 1963 as a development bank, the company has been changed to its current status since 2003. It is majority controlled by RYM Business Management Corporation, a business holding company associated with the Romualdez clan.

History

Early years

The company traced its origins on February 6, 1963 as the Private Development Corporation of the Philippines (PDCP), later renamed to PDCP Development Bank, Inc. (PDCP Bank) the same year. [1] Metro Pacific Corporation (later renamed Neo Oracle) acquired the company in 1992 and renamed as First e-Bank Corporation (1st e-Bank) in 2000, while the Bank of Commerce bought a stake in 2002. [2] However, in October of the same year, BDO Unibank acquired the operations of 1st e-Bank including its Smart Money Mastercard debit card issuer (which is a partnership with Smart Communications until 2017). [3]

On October 20, 2003, First e-Bank Corporation was renamed as Prime Media Holdings after selling its namesake business to BDO Unibank, leaving the company became dormant as it shifts to a holding investment.

Under new ownership

In 2013, RYM Business Management Corporation, owned by the family of politician Martin Romualdez, acquired the majority stake in Prime Media from Neo Oracle. [4]

In May 2021, Prime Media Holdings signed a share-for-share swap agreement with Philippine Collective Media Corporation (PCMC), also owned by the Romualdez, through a backdoor listing. Under the deal, PCMC shareholders will exchange their shares of common stock to take majority control of PRIM, which will acquire PCMC and will become the latter's subsidiary. [5] [6] [7] However, the memorandum was later revised following PCMC's shareholders created a holding firm Golden Peregrine Holdings (GPHI) which was already acquired PCMC, therefore GPHI became a direct subsidiary of PMHI with PCMC as its indirect subsidiary. [8]

On May 23, 2023, Prime Media announced a joint venture agreement with ABS-CBN Corporation. The new venture company will produce and supply various programs including news content to broadcasters and third-party entities, including PCMC. [9] Along with it are plans to operate a radio station on ABS-CBN's former frequency 630 kHz (previously known as DZMM), and managing the Filipino-language cable news channel TeleRadyo (which was originally intended to cease its broadcast on June 30, but was abruptly cancelled and reduced to closing out most of its old concurrent programs instead). [10] [11] On June 26, 2023, 630 kHz conducted a test broadcast under the DWPM callsign. [12] [13] The station and its TV counterpart had its soft launch on June 30 as Radyo 630 and TeleRadyo Serbisyo respectively and officially launched on July 17. [14] [15]

TV Patrol is a Philippine television news broadcasting show broadcast by ABS-CBN, Kapamilya Channel, A2Z and ALLTV. Originally anchored by Noli de Castro, Mel Tiangco and Robert Arevalo, it premiered on March 2, 1987, on the network's Primetime Bida line up replacing Balita Ngayon. De Castro, Karen Davila, Bernadette Sembrano and Alvin Elchico currently serve as the anchors. It is the longest running Filipino-language news program.

ABS-CBN News and Current Affairs, known on-air as ABS-CBN News, is the news and current affairs division of the Philippine media conglomerate ABS-CBN Corporation. The division is the country's largest international news gathering and broadcast organization, maintaining several foreign news bureaus and offices through ABS-CBN's Global division.

TeleRadyo Serbisyo is a Philippine pay television channel owned by Media Serbisyo Production Corporation, a joint venture between Prime Media Holdings and ABS-CBN Corporation, with ABS-CBN News as its main content provider, and is available on cable providers throughout the Philippines. TeleRadyo Serbisyo is also simulcasted via The Filipino Channel (TFC) and it can be heard and viewed online via its YouTube channel and iWantTFC. TeleRadyo was also included as a digital subchannel on digital terrestrial television seen via the ABS-CBN TVplus digital TV receivers and other digital TV boxes, until its discontinuation on November 1, 2022. However, on May 27, 2024, the channel resumed its digital free-to-air broadcast via Prime TV's feed. S.O.C.O.: Scene of the Crime Operatives is a Philippine television investigative docudrama show broadcast by ABS-CBN and Kapamilya Channel. Hosted by Gus Abelgas, it aired from November 23, 2005, to October 17, 2020, replacing Private I and was replaced by the third season of I Can See Your Voice in Kadenang Ginto: The Golden Comeback moved to afternoon timeslot. The program primarily aims to find answers to serious crimes with the help of forensic investigators and the local police. The show did not eventually return as Abelgas transferred to TV5 on July 13, 2023.

<i>Aksyon Ngayon</i> Filipino public service program, 1991–2016

Aksyon Ngayon was a public service program aired on DZMM. Originally hosted by Ted Failon and Korina Sanchez, It premiered on August 5, 1991, and the show concluded on December 30, 2016. Julius Babao, alongside Zaldy Naguit, served as the final host. The program was formerly aired every weekdays from 11:00am-12:00nn with simulcast on The Filipino Channel worldwide.

Alvin Elchico is a Filipino field reporter, newscaster, broadcast journalist and television host working for ABS-CBN and DZMM. A business reporter early in his career, he was the sole journalist able to report from inside the Oakwood Premier building during the Oakwood mutiny in July 2003. He is currently an anchor of ABS-CBN's evening news program TV Patrol and the morning news radio programs Gising Pilipinas and TeleRadyo Serbisyo Balita.

iWantTFC Philippine over-the-top content platform

iWantTFC is a Filipino over-the-top content platform and production company owned and operated by ABS-CBN Digital Media, a division of ABS-CBN Corporation, formed in 2020 through the merger of two streaming services iWant and TFC Online. In addition to offering on-demand contents of ABS-CBN, iWantTFC also live streams linear channels such as Kapamilya Channel, DWPM/TeleRadyo Serbisyo, ANC and Knowledge Channel.
