5 Elementz was Proof's first group which consisted of three local Detroit rappers; himself, Thyme & Mudd. Also known as 5 Ela, the group worked with Proof a lot in his early career, featuring on three tracks on his 1996 vinyl single "Searchin'". Proof was heavily featured on their first three group projects before focusing more of his attention on D12. The group continued to release music after Proof's departure, their latest project "...Will Be Televised" was released in 2008. The group showed signs of a reunion before Proof's death in 2006. Mudd was featured on the track "Slum Elementz" from Proofs 2005 album Searching For Jerry Garcia and the group recently collaborated on the track "5 Ela Reunion" which was recorded for Time A Tell.

Tony Louis Cottrell, better known as Hi-Tek, is an American rapper and music producer from Cincinnati, Ohio. He is best known for his work with Talib Kweli. His father is singer Willie Cottrell of the Willie Cottrell Band, whom Hi-Tek featured on his second album, Hi-Teknology 2.
Obie Trice III is an American rapper. He signed with fellow Detroit rapper Eminem's Shady Records, an imprint of Interscope Records in 2000 to release his first two albums, Cheers (2003) and Second Round's on Me (2006). Both peaked within the top ten of the Billboard 200, while the former was supported by the singles "Got Some Teeth" and the Dr. Dre-produced "The Set Up ". Upon leaving the label, Trice formed his own record label, Black Market Entertainment to release his following albums, Bottoms Up (2012), The Hangover (2015) and The Fifth (2019).
D12 was an American hip hop collective from Detroit, Michigan. Formed in 1996, the group achieved mainstream success with its lineup of de facto leader Eminem, Proof, Bizarre, Mr. Porter, Kuniva and Swifty McVay.

Proof was often a hype man rapper at Eminem's concerts.

The album is named after Grateful Dead member Jerry Garcia, with its release date intentionally coinciding with the ten-year anniversary of Garcia's death.
