Puakena Boreham (born 18 December 1970) is an anaesthetist who became a Tuvaluan politician,when she was elected to represent Nui in the 2015 Tuvaluan general election. [2] [3] [4] She was not re-elected in the 2024 Tuvaluan general election. [5] [6]
Dr Boreham studied at the Fiji School of Medicine and graduated in 1998. She has worked for the Tuvaluan Ministry of Health at the Princess Margaret Hospital as an anaesthetist and as the Medical Superintendent. [7] [8] In 2014 she carried out post-graduate study at the Australian National University in global health diplomacy,global health and foreign policy. [9]
She was appointed as the Minister of Works and Natural Resources in August 2016; [10] and served as the minister during the Sopoaga Ministry. She was re-elected in the 2019 general election. [11]
Dr Boreham was the third woman to be elected to the Parliament of Tuvalu: [12] following Naama Maheu Latasi (1989 to 1997); [13] and Pelenike Isaia (2011 to 2015). [14]
In July 2020,Dr. Boreham was appointed to the Constitutional Review Parliamentary Select Committee. [15] The Final Report of the Constitutional Review Parliamentary Select Committee was published on 12 December 2022. [15] The work of the committee resulted in the Constitution of Tuvalu Act 2023, [16] which amended the Constitution of Tuvalu. [16]
The politics of Tuvalu takes place in a framework of a parliamentary representative democratic monarchy,whereby the monarch is the head of state,represented by the governor-general,while the prime minister is the head of government. Executive power is exercised by the government.
Nui is an atoll and one of nine districts of the Pacific Ocean state of Tuvalu. It has a land area of 3.37 km2 and a population of 610.
Tuvalu elects a legislature on a national level. The Parliament of Tuvalu has 16 members,elected for a four-year term in 8 double-seat constituencies. Tuvalu is a de facto non-partisan democracy since it does not have political parties. The political system is based on personal alliances and loyalties derived from clan and family connections. It does tend to have both a distinct government and a distinct opposition. The 16 members of the current parliament are elected from eight two-seat constituencies via plurality block voting.
The Parliament of Tuvalu is the unicameral national legislature of Tuvalu. The place at which the parliament sits is called the Vaiaku maneapa. The maneapa on each island is an open meeting place where the chiefs and elders deliberate and make decisions.
Sir Kamuta Latasi is a political figure from the Pacific nation of Tuvalu from Funafuti atoll. He was elected to the Parliament of Tuvalu in 1992. Latasi served as the 4th prime minister,and foreign minister,from 1993 until 1996. He has served as the Speaker of parliament from 2006 to September 2010 and again from December 2010 to March 2014.
Sir Iakoba Taeia Italeli is a Tuvaluan politician who was the governor-general of Tuvalu from 16 April 2010,until 22 August 2019,when he resigned to contest in the 2019 general election. He was not successful in that election,however he was elected as a member of parliament in the 2024 Tuvaluan general election.

He is the son of Sir Fiatau Penitala Teo who was appointed as the first Governor General of Tuvalu (1978–1986) following independence from Great Britain. Samuelu Teo himself served as the Acting Governor-General of Tuvalu from January until 28 September 2021. He had succeeded Acting Governor-General Teniku Talesi and remained in office until the Rev. Tofiga Vaevalu Falani was sworn in as the 10th Governor-General in September 2021.
