The PyeongChang Organizing Committee for the 2018 Olympic & Paralympic Winter Games (POCOG) is an organisation that oversees the planning and development of the 2018 Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games. POCOG's headquarters is located in the host city of PyeongChang with two offices in Gangneung and Seoul.
Kim Jin-sun was appointed as the first president of POCOG. A former Governor of the Gangwon Province, he was Special Ambassador for the Pyeongchang's Olympic Bid.
The second president of POCOG, Cho Yang-ho, is Chairman of Hanjin Group. [1] President Cho had enjoyed a long-standing relationship with the Olympic movement and was active in Pyeongchang's bid for the Olympic Winter Games. On May 3, 2016, President Cho resigned on the ground of returning to focus on his company, Hanjin Group.
On May 3, 2016, the government announced Lee Hee-beom, a former Minister of Trade, Industry, and Energy, as the third president to head POCOG. [2] Last October,[ when? ] with the consideration of lack of promotion and ticket sales of Winter Olympic Games, Organizing Committee nominated Kim Joo-ho, President of Collabo K and Master at Cheil Worldwide (Samsung), as Executive Vice President of Games Planning and Communications. Kim Jae-youl, President of the Korea Skating Union (KSU) and President of Cheil Communications joined POCOG as Executive Vice President of International Relations.
POCOG comprises Advisory Committee, whose members include the Prime Minister, Chairman of the National Assembly, IOC Member Lee Kun-hee, Chairman of the Federation of the Korean Industries, six Vice Chairmen, Executive Board, and Advisory Group. The Secretariat is led by Secretary-General and three Vice Secretaries-General.
The 2018 Winter Olympics, officially the XXIII Olympic Winter Games and also known as PyeongChang 2018, were an international winter multi-sport event held between 9 and 25 February 2018 in Pyeongchang, South Korea, with the opening rounds for certain events held on 8 February, a day before the opening ceremony.

The cities of Annecy, France, in the French Alps, Munich, Germany, and Pyeongchang, South Korea, a two-time previous bidder, competed for the hosting rights to the event. This was the lowest number of bidding cities since the 1988 Summer Olympics, coincidentally also won by South Korea. The winning bid was announced on July 6, 2011, at the 123rd IOC Session in Durban, South Africa by IOC President Jacques Rogge at 5.22 pm local time Pyeongchang beat Munich and Annecy in the first round of votes with 63 of the 95 total votes.
The 2018 Winter Paralympics, the 12th Paralympic Winter Games, and also more generally known as the PyeongChang 2018 Paralympic Winter Games, were an international multi-sport event for athletes with disabilities governed by the International Paralympic Committee (IPC), that was held in Pyeongchang, South Korea, from 9 to 18 March 2018. They were the second Paralympics to be held in South Korea, following the 1988 Summer Paralympics in Seoul.

Soohorang is the official mascot of the 2018 Winter Olympics, and Bandabi is the official mascot of the 2018 Winter Paralympics. Both events were held in Pyeongchang, Gangwon, South Korea. Soohorang is a white tiger and Bandabi is an Asiatic black bear. The mascots were selected through a national tender process held in 2014 and were approved of by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) on June 2, 2016.

North Korea competed in the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea. Pair skaters Ryom Tae-ok and Kim Ju-sik qualified for the Games, but the North Korean National Olympic Committee failed to enter them by the 30 October 2017 deadline. On 9 January 2018, North Korea agreed in negotiations with South Korea to send both athletes and a delegation to the Winter Olympics.
South Korea competed at the 2018 Winter Paralympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea, from 9–18 March 2018, as the host nation. In February 2018, the IPC had recommended North Korea to participate, and so North Korea made its Winter Paralympic debut. Teams representing South Korea and North Korea had planned to enter the Opening Ceremony marching under the Korean Unification Flag, however talks between the two teams failed to do so, and they entered separately in the opening ceremony under their own respective flags.
