Qasımlı (also, Kasymly and Kasumly) is a village and municipality in the Masally Rayon of Azerbaijan. It has a population of 2,079.

Azerbaijan, officially the Republic of Azerbaijan, is a country in the South Caucasus region of Eurasia at the crossroads of Eastern Europe and Western Asia. Kasym Khan was a son of Janibek Khan and the fourth Khan of Kazakh Khanate from about 1511 to 1521. He is viewed as the first leader who united the Kazakh tribes. Although, Burunduk Khan was the Khan of the Kazakhs, the control of the government was in the hands of Kasym Khan. Eventually, he sent Burunduk Khan into exile who died in Samarkand. Kazakh Khanate former country

The Kazakh Khanate was a successor of the Golden Horde existing from the 15th to 19th century, located roughly on the territory of the present-day Republic of Kazakhstan. At its height, the khanate ruled from eastern Cumania to most of Uzbekistan, Karakalpakstan and the Syr Darya river with military confrontation as far as Astrakhan and Khorasan Province, which are now in Russia and Iran, respectively. The Khanate was later weakened by a series of Oirat and Dzungar invasions, devastating raids and warfare. These resulted in a decline and further disintegration into three Jüz-es, which gradually lost their sovereignty and were incorporated to the expanding Russian Empire. Its establishment marked the beginning of Kazakh statehood whose 550th anniversary was celebrated in 2015.

The Gift to Stalin is a 2008 Kazakhstani film that tells the story of a little boy named Sasha who is sent to Kazakhstan. He is saved from death by an old Kazakh man, Kasym, who takes the boy into his home. The film is set in 1949. The title, The Gift to Stalin, has significance in two ways. First, in 1949, the Soviet government carried out a nuclear test on the anniversary of Joseph Stalin’s 70th birthday. Many innocent people fell victim to the nuclear test. The other significance is concerns Sasha’s dream. He hopes that if he gives Stalin a gift, he will be able to see his parents again, not knowing that they have been killed.

Nemet Yusif oghlu Qasimov, Ashik, Doctor of Philosophy in Philology, is a modern Azerbaijani ashik and Meritorious Cultural Worker of Azerbaijan. He is featured in the UNESCO video on “The Art of Azerbaijani Ashik” documenting the inclusion of the ashik profession into UNESCO’s Intangible Heritage of Humanity Registry in 2009.
