The Austrian School is a heterodox school of economic thought that advocates strict adherence to methodological individualism, the concept that social phenomena result primarily from the motivations and actions of individuals and their self interest. Austrian school theorists hold that economic theory should be exclusively derived from basic principles of human action.

Rothbard was a central figure in the 20th-century American libertarian movement, particularly its right-wing strands, and was a founder and leading theoretician of anarcho-capitalism. The Cato Journal was a triannual peer-reviewed academic journal that covered public policy from an Austro-libertarian point of view. It was established in 1981 and published by the Cato Institute. It published articles discussing politics and economy. The journal was a "free-market, public policy journal ... for scholars concerned with questions of public policy, yet it is written and edited to be accessible to the interested lay reader". The final editor-in-chief was James A. Dorn. The final issue was released in 2021.

The Ludwig von Mises Institute then replaced the journal with the Quarterly Journal of Austrian Economics.
