Sri R. Swaminatha Merkondar was an Indian politician. He represented the Tiruvaiyaru constituency in the Madras Assembly from 1957-62. [1] [2]

Early life

Merkondar was born in Koonampatti village of Thanjavur district. He is zamindar of Koonampatti and grandchild of S. Kumarasamy Merkondar (son in-law of Madukkur zamindar). [3] Koonampatti zamindars are descendants of forest king Meicondan. [4] In the last century Pudupatti, Thanjavur, Sengipatti belongs to Koonampatti Jameen Merkondar family. Koonampatti village was part of Korkai Nadu during the Chola period. [5] [6] [7]

Career

R. Swaminatha Merkondar was a member of the Indian National Congress party and represented the Tiruvaiyaru constituency in the Madras Assembly from 1957-62. He served as a chairman of Budalur. [8]

Maravar are a Tamil community in the state of Tamil Nadu. These people are one of the three branches of the Mukkulathor confederacy. Members of the Maravar community often use the honorific title Thevar. They are classified as an Other Backward Class or a Denotified Tribe in Tamil Nadu, depending on the district.

The Mukkulathor people, who are also collectively known as Thevar, are a community or group of communities native to the central and southern districts of Tamil Nadu, India. They comprise the Agamudayar, Kallar and Maravar communities that share a common myth of origin and claim to have once been members of various ancient South Indian dynasties.

The Ramnad riots or the Mudukulathur riots were a series of violent clashes that occurred between July and September 1957 in the Ramnad district and in southern Tamil Nadu, India. The violence was between Thevars supporting the Forward Bloc, and pro-Congress Dalit Pallars, and was triggered by a by-election held in the aftermath of the Madras Legislative Assembly elections of earlier that year. 42 Dalits were killed during the riots.

Thanjavur Marathi people, are a Thanjavur Marathi-speaking ethno-linguistic group, who reside in the central and northern parts of the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. They are the descendants of Marathi administrators, soldiers and noblemen who migrated to this region during the rule of the Thanjavur Maratha kingdom. Thanjavur was a Maratha kingdom in Tamil Country, until the British East India Company dethroned the last Thanjavur Maratha king, Shivaji of Thanjavur. Thai Meethu Sathiyam is a 1978 Indian Tamil-language Curry Western film directed by R. Thyagarajan and produced by Sandow M. M. A. Chinnappa Thevar. The film stars Rajinikanth and Sripriya, with Mohan Babu, Prabhakar, Suruli Rajan, Sundararajan, A. V. M. Rajan, S. A. Ashokan, Nagesh, Ambareesh, Jayamalini and Sukumari in supporting roles. It focuses on a shepherd who vows to avenge his parents by killing the murderers. The film is notable for being the first masala action film in Rajinikanth's career.

P. K. Mookiah Thevar (1923–1979) was an Indian politician.

Shanmugha Rajeswara Sethupathi or Naganatha Sethupathi was an Indian politician of the Justice Party and later, the Indian National Congress and head of the zamindari of Ramnad or Ramnad kingdom from 1929 to 1967. He was a member of the Madras Legislative Assembly from 1951 to 1967 and served as a minister in C. Rajagopalachari and K. Kamaraj's cabinets. He was popular as the main political opponent of U. Muthuramalingam Thevar.

Maha vidhwan Thirumaaligai Appan Narayana Iyengar was born to Thirumaaligai Appan Iyengar and Shenkamalavalli Ammal on 31 Oct 1861 in EthirkOtai near Srivilliputhur. He was a great literary scholar of his time and was well versed in both Tamil and Sanskrit languages. He has done many works in these languages and has won many accolades for his works and for the development of these languages. He also worked tirelessly for the development of the Tamil language and was instrumental in its spread through his publication of the Senthamizh magazine as part of the Madurai Tamil Sangam and through his other educational efforts. After having learnt the basics of Tamil literature and grammar from his father Appan Iyengar and other scholars near his home town during his formative years, he moved to Ramanathapuram and then to Madurai when the Madurai Tamil Sangam was established in 1901.

Piramalai Kallars is a sub caste of the Kallars and thus are part of the Mukkulathor community that also includes the Maravar and Agamudayar castes. They belong to Other Backward class/Denotified class in Tamil nadu.
