R. Thyagarajan (died 1 July 2018) was an Indian writer, producer and director who worked in Tamil cinema.
Thyagarajan grew up in Pollachi in an extended family of 23 people, and had four sisters and four brothers. After studying in Pollachi, he went on to study chemistry in Peelamedu, with the intention of becoming a chemist. After his marriage in 1966, he began to work on the productions of his father-in-law, Sandow M. M. A. Chinnappa Thevar of Devar Films. He initially worked on the story-discussion panel teams in 1968 and progressed to the editing department. [1] In the late 1960s, he worked as an assistant director and as an associate editor in the films, Haathi Mere Saathi (1971) and Nalla Neram (1972). [2] [3]
His first directorial venture was Vellikizhamai Viratham (1974), which portrayed the bond between the female protagonist and her deity, the Naga-Devatha. The film starring Sivakumar, performed well at the box office and was later remade in Hindi and Telugu. [2] Over the course of his career, he was closely associated with Devar Films, eventually going on to make over 30 films. He made 11 films with Rajinikanth in the lead role, including the Tamil-Telugu bilinguals Annai Oru Aalayam (1979) and Anbukku Naan Adimai (1980), the crime drama Ranga (1982), and the Hindi film Bewafai (1985). [2] Several of the films produced under the Devar Films banner featured animals such as lions, snakes and elephants in pivotal scenes, and Thyagarajan became renowned for handling the shoot. [4]
In 1966, Thyagarajan married T. Subbulakshmi. He subsequently became the son-in-law of Sandow M. M. A. Chinnappa Thevar. He had two children, son Vel Muruga and daughter Shanmugha Vadivu. [5]
Thyagarajan died on 1 July 2018 following a heart attack. [6] [7]

Thevar Magan is a 1992 Indian Tamil-language drama film directed by Bharathan, and written and produced by Kamal Haasan. It stars Sivaji Ganesan, Haasan, Revathi, Gautami and Nassar; with Kallapart Natarajan, Kaka Radhakrishnan, Sangili Murugan and Vadivelu in supporting roles. The film's story involves a respected village chieftain's son who wants to open a business but his father wants him to help the villagers.
Haathi Mere Saathi is a 1971 Indian Hindi-language drama film, directed by M. A. Thirumugam, with screenplay written by Salim–Javed and dialogues by Inder Raj Anand. The movie has a Disneyesque appeal with an Indian twist. Haathi Mere Saathi was the biggest hit of 1971 going by box office collections, and was also critically acclaimed. The film stars Rajesh Khanna and Tanuja. The film at that point in time was the biggest hit ever made by a South Indian producer in Hindi.
Bairavi is a 1978 Indian Tamil-language film directed by M. Bhaskar, and produced by Kalaignanam, who also wrote the story and dialogues. It stars Srikanth, Rajinikanth and Sripriya. Geetha was introduced in this film and plays the title character. Srikanth played the antagonist. Sudheer, Manorama and Suruli Rajan played other major roles. The film was released on 8 June 1978.
Thai Meethu Sathiyam is a 1978 Indian Tamil-language Curry Western film directed by R. Thyagarajan and produced by Sandow M. M. A. Chinnappa Thevar. The film stars Rajinikanth and Sripriya, with Mohan Babu, Prabhakar, Suruli Rajan, Sundararajan, A. V. M. Rajan, S. A. Ashokan, Nagesh, Ambareesh, Jayamalini and Sukumari in supporting roles. It focuses on a shepherd who vows to avenge his parents by killing the murderers.
Anbukku Naan Adimai is a 1980 Indian Tamil-language action drama film directed by R. Thyagarajan and produced under the Devar Films banner by C. Dhandayuthapani. It stars Rajinikanth, Vijayan, Surulirajan, Thengai Srinivasan, Asokan, Sundarrajan, Sujatha, Rathi, Ramaprabha and Jayamalini. The film was simultaneously made in Telugu as Mayadari Krishnudu, with Sreedhar replacing Vijayan and a slightly different supporting cast that included Satyanarayana, Mohan Babu, and Allu Rama Lingaiah. It was remade in Hindi as Thanedaar (1990).
Ranga is a 1982 Indian Tamil-language action film directed by R. Thyagarajan, produced by C. Dhandayudhapani under Thevar Films and stars Rajinikanth in the titular role, alongside Radhika Sarathkumar and K. R. Vijaya. The film marks Rajinikanth's 75th film as an actor.
Aadu Puli Aattam is a 1977 Indian Tamil-language action film directed by S. P. Muthuraman, starring Kamal Haasan, Rajinikanth, Sangeetha and Sripriya. Later in 1978, S. P. Muthuraman remade the film in Telugu as Yetthuku Pai Yetthu. A few scenes were remade in Telugu with Telugu actors like Satyanarayana and Allu Ramalingaiah and the rest of the film was dubbed.
Thayai Katha Thanayan is a 1962 Indian Tamil-language film, directed by M. A. Thirumugam and produced by Sandow M. M. A. Chinnappa Thevar. The film stars M. G. Ramachandran, M. R. Radha and B. Saroja Devi. It was released on 13 April 1962.
Vettaikkaran (transl. Hunter) is a 1964 Indian Tamil-language action drama film directed by M. A. Thirumugam and produced by Sandow M. M. A. Chinnappa Thevar. The film stars M. G. Ramachandran and Savitri Ganesh, with M. R. Radha, M. N. Nambiar, S. A. Ashokan, Thai Nagesh, M. V. Rajamma, Manorama and Baby Shakila in supporting roles. It revolves around an estate hunter whose penchant for hunting displeases his family, and a plunderer who lusts for his wealth.
Nalla Neram is a 1972 Indian Tamil-language film, directed by M. A. Thirumugam and produced by Sandow M. M. A. Chinnappa Thevar. The film stars M. G. Ramachandran and K. R. Vijaya. It is a remake of the 1971 Hindi film Haathi Mere Saathi. All three versions were produced by Thevar. The film was released on 10 March 1972. It emerged a major success, running for more than 100 days in theatres.
"Sandow"Marudur Marudachalamurthy Ayyavoo Chinnappa Thevar was a producer of Tamil films in the mid-1950s through the 1960s and 1970s. He is best known for his films featuring animals, and has produced numerous movies with M. G. Ramachandran as lead actor.
Aattukara Alamelu is a 1977 Indian Tamil-language film directed by R. Thyagarajan and produced by Sandow M. M. A. Chinnappa Thevar. The film stars Sivakumar and Sripriya. It was released on 10 November 1977 and became a silver jubilee hit. The film was remade in Telugu as Pottelu Punnamma and in Hindi as Mera Rakshak.
M. Bhaskar was an Indian filmmaker who worked mainly in the Tamil film industry. Bhaskar started his film career as an assistant to director C. V. Sridhar. After relieving from his mentor and guru C. V. Sridhar, he was working under Sundaram's Modern Theaters, Chinnappa Thevar along with S. P. Muthuraman, Panju Arunachalam, Thuyavan, Uthiripookkal Balakrishnan and others. He also worked as a second unit Director for 20th Century Fox, during their production in Goa, India.

The film stars Sivakumar, Jayachitra and Jayasudha, along with Nagesh, Sundarrajan, Srikanth and Sasikumar as supporting actors. It was released on 12 April 1974. The film was remade in Telugu as Nomu (1974) and in Hindi as Shubh Din (1974).
M. A. Thirumugam was an Indian film director and editor. He was the younger brother of the film producer Sandow M. M. A. Chinnappa Thevar.
