R.W. Buzzard is an American jurist who, as of 2019, is a judge of the District Court of Lewis County, a rural county in the state of Washington.
R.W. Buzzard is the son of Steve Buzzard, a former judge of the municipal court of Chehalis, Washington, and Missy Buzzard, the town's former mayor. [1] He graduated from Centralia High School and Eastern Washington University, and later earned a Juris Doctor cum laude from the Seattle University School of Law. He also has a Master of Business Administration from City University of Seattle. [2]
R.W. Buzzard was admitted to the bar in 2000. [2] In 2003, he was appointed to the municipal court of Centralia, Washington and, the following year, was elected to the bench of the Lewis County District Court. [1]
Buzzard was the subject of criticism in 2018 by a former court employee who accused him of drinking alcohol in his judge's chambers, and for leaving his firearm in an unlocked drawer of his desk. [3] According to Buzzard, he kept the firearm for personal protection as one of his judicial duties was to ride circuit to the remote town of Morton, Washington. [3] A former judicial colleague did not agree with Buzzard's concerns about courthouse security and did not think he needed a firearm to protect himself. Judge Buzzard stated that he carried his gun mainly for the walk from the parking lot to the courthouse building. He did not carry it on the bench and was "not roaming the halls with it." [3] Buzzard later began keeping his firearm in safe at the courthouse. [3]
Buzzard has criticized the lack of security in the judicial facilities of Washington which have a high rate of courtroom violence; the state has the eighth greatest number of annual courtroom security incidents in the United States, eclipsing even that of New York despite the latter state having three times Washington's population. In April 2018, Buzzard personally intervened in a fight that erupted in his courtroom after a civil defendant punched an attorney. Buzzard responded to the assault by descending from the bench and physically restraining the man. [5] Later that October, Buzzard again descended from the bench to give chase after two criminal suspects attempted to escape his courtroom. [6] When the two men fled, Buzzard ripped off his judicial robe and pursued the suspects through the courthouse, ultimately grappling and restraining one of the two. The second man was later apprehended by deputies of the Lewis County Sheriff. [7]
Buzzard is a member of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks and is Methodist. [2] He is married with two children. [1]

Brian Gene Nichols is a convicted murderer known for his escape and killing spree in the Fulton County Courthouse in Atlanta, Georgia, on March 11, 2005. Nichols was on trial for rape when he escaped custody and murdered Rowland Barnes, the judge presiding over his trial, a court reporter, a Fulton County Sheriff's deputy, and later an ICE special agent. Twenty-six hours after a large-scale manhunt was launched in the metropolitan Atlanta area, Nichols was taken into custody. The prosecution charged him with committing 54 crimes during the escape; he was found guilty on all counts on November 7, 2008, and was subsequently sentenced to life in prison.

United States v. Shelley M. Richmond Joseph and Wesley MacGregor (2019) was the federal criminal prosecution of a Massachusetts state court judge (Joseph) and court officer (MacGregor) for helping a state court defendant evade federal immigration authorities by allowing him to leave a court hearing through a rear door of the courthouse. Both were charged with conspiracy to obstruct justice, aiding and abetting obstruction of justice, and aiding and abetting obstruction of a federal proceeding; MacGregor was also charged with perjury during grand jury proceedings. Joseph faced 20 years in prison; MacGregor, 30 years. Both could have been fined $250,000. On September 22, 2022, the case concluded with an announcement by federal prosecutors that the obstruction charges against both Joseph and MacGregor would be dismissed and that prosecution of the perjury charge against MacGregor would be deferred. As part of the resolution, Joseph agreed to submit to disciplinary proceedings before the Massachusetts Commission on Judicial Conduct. In December 2024, the Commission filed formal charges against Joseph with the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court, alleging that her conduct was "unbecoming a judicial officer." The Commission accused Joseph of violating the Massachusetts Code of Judicial Conduct by failing to comply with the law, and alleged that she engaged in conduct "prejudicial to the administration of justice."
