Its western origin is the R36 between Waterval Boven and Mashishing (Lydenburg), at the Chom se Hoogte Pass. It runs east through De Beersnek Pass, Patatanek, and Schoemanskloof pass [2] to join the N4. The R539 is cosigned with the N4 through the Montrose pass, but it leaves the N4 on the eastern side, heading north-east to end at the R37 between Sabie and Nelspruit. [1]

Lydenburg, also known as Mashishing, is a town in Thaba Chweu Local Municipality, on the Mpumalanga highveld, South Africa. It is situated on the Sterkspruit/Dorps River tributary of the Lepelle River at the summit of the Long Tom Pass. It has a long, rich history, ranging from AD 500 to the present. The name is derived from the Dutch Lijdenburg, or "Town of Suffering", and is named for the experiences of the white settlers. In Northern Sotho, Mashishing means "long green grass." Lydenburg has become the centre of the South African fly-fishing industry and is an agricultural, tourism and mining hub.
Machadodorp, also known by its official name eNtokozweni, is a small town situated on the N4 national highway, near the edge of the escarpment in the Mpumalanga province of South Africa. The Elands River runs through the town. There is a natural radioactive spring here that is reputed to have powerful healing qualities.
The R36 is a provincial route in South Africa that connects the N1 at Bandelierkop with Ermelo, via Tzaneen and Lydenburg. It is co-signed with the N4 for 8 kilometres between Machadodorp and Patattanek, with a tollgate on this section. It used to extend further south past Ermelo to Amersfoort, but that section is now designated as part of the N11.
