The Rabdan Academy is a government-owned education institution in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. [4] [5]

History

The Rabdan Academy was officially established under Law No. 7 for 2013, issued by President His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan in his capacity as Ruler of Abu Dhabi. It is accredited by the UAE's Commission for Academic Accreditation (CAA) of the Ministry of Education. [6] [1] [7]

Programs

The Rabdan Academy offers programs at the Diploma and Higher Diploma levels and Associate, Bachelor and master's degree levels in the disciples of safety, security, defence, emergency preparedness and crisis management. [8] The people it trains include firefighters. [9]

Initiatives

In 2014, the Rabdan Academy signed Memoranda of Understanding with the General Headquarters of the United Arab Emirates Armed Forces, the Ministry of Interior, and Tawazun Safety, Security and Disaster Management City (Jaheziya) for academic and training support. [10]

The Rabdan Academy is involved in the establishment of the new Zayed Military University and will provide its academic elements. [11]

Notable people

Rabdan Academy's president and CEO is Rear Admiral James Morse, a retired British senior Royal Navy officer who served as Assistant Chief of the Naval Staff (Capability) and Controller of the Navy. He was also the Commandant of the Joint Services Command and Staff College. [12] He became president and CEO of the Rabdan Academy in August 2016. [13] [14] Morse told Gulf News that: "The idea is to prepare young people of the country for the challenges of the future. Not just training them for today, but for the coming four to five years when they have to take charge in intelligence, police and security sectors of the country. So educating young generation is key." [1]

Among its faculty is Joel Hayward, a professor of strategic thought. The daily newspaper Al Khaleej called Hayward "a world authority on international conflict and strategy". [15] The National newspaper called Hayward “eminent” and a “distinguished historian of warfare and military strategy”. [16] Kirkus Reviews said that Hayward "is undeniably one of academia’s most visible Islamic thinkers". [17] He is considered to be one of "the world’s five hundred most influential Muslims," with his listing in the 2023 and 2024 editions of The Muslim 500 stating that "he weaves together classical Islamic knowledge and methodologies and the source-critical Western historical method to make innovative yet carefully reasoned sense of complex historical issues that are still important in today’s world." [18] Hayward's seventeenth book, The Leadership of Muhammad was awarded the prize of Best International Non-Fiction Book at the 2021 Sharjah International Book Awards. [19]

Zayed served as the governor of Eastern Region from 1946 until he succeeded Sheikh Shakhbut as the ruler of Abu Dhabi in 1966, and then as the first president of the United Arab Emirates while he retained his position as Abu Dhabi's ruler from 1971 until his death in 2004. He is revered in the United Arab Emirates as the Waalid al-Ummah, credited for being the principal driving force behind uniting the seven Trucial States to found the Union of the United Arab Emirates.

Tahnoun bin Zayed Al Nahyan is the son of Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the founder of the United Arab Emirates. Since 2016 he has served as the National Security Advisor of UAE. At the same time he manages a business portfolio, which supports national security interests and the UAE's opaque corporate sector. He chairs G42. The 2021 Pandora Papers revealed how he and his wife use shell companies to conceal their wealth.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Tourism in the United Arab Emirates</span>

Tourism in the United Arab Emirates is an important part of the Emirati economy. In 2023, the tourism sector employed 809,300 people and contributed 220 billion dirham to the national gross domestic product (GDP), accounting for 12% of it. In 2024, the UAE was the 6th destination globally by international tourism receipts according to the World Tourism rankings, and it ranked 18th globally in the Travel and Tourism Development Index.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Jouan Salem Al Dhaheri</span> Emirati politician

Jouan Salem Al Dhaheri was an Emirati politician. He served as the secretary general and member of the Supreme Petroleum Council alongside both the crown prince of Abu Dhabi and the president of United Arab Emirates. He served on the Board of Etihad Airways and National Bank of Abu Dhabi. He was also the bank’s chairman of the Executive Committee and member of Risk Management Committee. Al Dhaheri was also a board member, director of the Abu Dhabi Investment Authority.
