Rachel Hood (born September 1953 [1] ) is an English classic-winning [2] thoroughbred racehorse owner and politician.
Hood has owned numerous race horses,including St. Leger Stakes winner Arctic Cosmos, [3] Cheshire Oaks winner [4] Gertrude Bell and Nichols Canyon.
She is an English and American-qualified attorney,and practiced in the State of California. She is currently Chairwoman of the Racehorse Owners Association.
She currently serves as a Conservative Party councillor in Newmarket. [5] [6]
She met her husband,racehorse trainer John Gosden,whilst they were both students at the University of Cambridge. She has four children,Sebastian,Serena,Theodora and Thaddeus. [7] ,and lives in Newmarket,Suffolk.
Newmarket is a market town and civil parish in the West Suffolk district of Suffolk,England,Located 14 miles west of Bury St Edmunds and 14 miles northeast of Cambridge. It is considered the birthplace and global centre of thoroughbred horse racing. It is a major local business cluster,with annual investment rivalling that of the Cambridge Science Park,the other major cluster in the region. It is the largest racehorse training centre in Britain,the largest racehorse breeding centre in the country,home to most major British horseracing institutions,and a key global centre for horse health. Two Classic races,and an additional three British Champions Series races are held at Newmarket every year. The town has had close royal connections since the time of James I,who built a palace there,and was also a base for Charles I,Charles II,and most monarchs since. Elizabeth II visited the town often to see her horses in training.
North Light was a retired Thoroughbred racehorse,and active sire,bred in Ireland but trained in the United Kingdom. He was best known as the winner of The Derby in 2004.
Pommern (1912–1935) was a British bred Thoroughbred racehorse and sire. In a racing career which lasted from 1914 to June 1916 he ran ten times and won seven races. As a three-year-old in 1915 he won the 2000 Guineas at Newmarket and the wartime substitutes for The Derby and the St. Leger Stakes to win a version of the English Triple Crown. After winning his only race as a four-year-old in 1916,he was retired to stud where he had limited success.
Watling Street (1939–1953) was a British Thoroughbred racehorse and sire. In a career which lasted from spring 1941 to September 1942 he ran nine times and won four races. Having been rated the third best British two-year-old of his generation he went on to greater success as a three-year-old the following year when he won a wartime substitute version of The Derby and finished second in both the 2000 Guineas and the "New" St Leger. At the end of 1942 he was retired to a stud career of limited importance. He was eventually exported to the United States where he died in 1953.

Arctic Cosmos is an American-bred,British-trained racehorse and sire best known as the winner of the 2010 St. Leger Stakes.
Silvio (1874–1890) was a British Thoroughbred racehorse and sire. In a career that lasted from 1874 to 1877 he ran eight times and won three races. In 1877 he won The Derby and the St Leger. At the end of the 1877 season he was retired to stud where he had success both in England and France.
Tracery (1909–1924) was an American-bred,British-trained Thoroughbred racehorse and sire,best known for winning the St. Leger Stakes in 1912. In a career which lasted from June 1912 until October 1913 he ran nine times and won six races. After finishing third on his debut in the 1912 Epsom Derby Tracery never lost another completed race at level weights. He won the St. James's Palace Stakes,Sussex Stakes and St. Leger Stakes in 1912 and the Eclipse Stakes and Champion Stakes as a four-year-old in 1913. He was brought down by a protester in the 1913 Ascot Gold Cup. After his retirement from racing he became a highly successful breeding stallion in Britain and Argentina.
Herringbone was a British Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare,best known for winning two Classics in 1943. The filly won four times from ten races in a track career which lasted from spring 1942 until September 1943. As a two-year-old in 1942 she won twice from five starts but was not among the best of her generation. After being beaten on her three-year-old debut she won the 1000 Guineas over one mile at and finished fourth in the Oaks over one and a half miles a month later. In September she beat a field which included the Derby winner Straight Deal to win the St Leger Stakes over one and three quarter miles. All three of the races took place at Newmarket's July Course. After her second classic win she was retired to stud,where she became a successful broodmare.

Hycilla was a British Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare,who raced during World War II and was best known for winning the classic Oaks Stakes in 1944. Unraced as a juvenile,she finished second on her three-year-old debut before winning the Oaks,which was run that year at Newmarket Racecourse. She was beaten when favourite for St Leger but ended her year with a win in the Champion Stakes. In the following year,she failed to win but ran well in defeat when third in a strongly-contested Coronation Cup. She retired to become a broodmare in the United States but made little impact,producing four minor stakes winners.
Tehran (1941–1966) was a British Thoroughbred racehorse and sire,who raced during World War II and was best known for winning the classic St Leger in 1944. After showing little ability as a two-year-old he improved in the following spring to win the Culford Stakes on his three-year-old debut. He ran third in the 2000 Guineas and was narrowly beaten into second place in the Derby Stakes. After winning the Whepstead Stakes he recorded his biggest win when defeating a strong field in a substitute St Leger. He won his first three races in 1945 and finished second in the Ascot Gold Cup. He later became a successful breeding stallion,siring several major winners including Tulyar.
Turkhan was a British Thoroughbred racehorse and sire,who raced during World War II and was best known for winning the classic St Leger in 1940. He showed good form as a two-year-old,winning the Coventry Stakes at Royal Ascot. In the following year he finished second in the rescheduled New Derby and won the Irish Derby before taking a substitute Yorkshire St Leger at Thirsk Racecourse in November. He was then retired to stud where he made little impact as a breeding stallion.
Quiff is a British Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. Bred and owned by Khalid Abdulla and trained by Michael Stoute,she was lightly campaigned and ran only six times in three seasons. After finishing fifth on her only appearance as a two-year-old she won on her debut at three in 2004 and then appeared unlucky when beaten in the Ribblesdale Stakes. She then recorded her biggest success when winning the Group One Yorkshire Oaks by eleven lengths. On her fourth and final race as a three-year-old she was narrowly beaten in the St Leger Stakes. Her performances led to her being rated the best filly of her generation in the world over staying distances. After running poorly on her only start in 2005 she was retired from racing and has had some success as a broodmare.
Ginevra was a British Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare best known for winning the 1972 Epsom Oaks. After winning two minor races as a two-year-old she improved in 1972 to win the Ladbrokes Oaks Trial before taking the Oaks. She went on to finish third in the Yorkshire Oaks and the St Leger. At the end of the year she was sold to a Japanese breeding syndicate and exported to Japan. Ginevra did not produce any notable offspring,although two of her daughters had some success as broodmares.
Snow Marten was a British thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. She showed promise as a two-year-old in 1914 when she won once and finished second three times from six starts. In the following year she finished unplaced in the 1000 Guineas but then recorded an upset win in the Oaks Stakes. She was placed in wartime substitute races for the Ascot Gold Cup and the St Leger and ended her racing career by finishing third in the Cesarewitch. As a broodmare,she had her biggest influence through her daughter Martha Snow who was exported to the United States.
Tranquil was a British Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. She showed considerable promise as a two-year-old when she won one race and finished second in the Gimcrack Stakes. In the following season she was one of the best horses in Britain,scoring classic victories in the 1000 Guineas and St Leger Stakes as well as winning four other races including the Jockey Club Cup and Newmarket Oaks. She won once in 1924 before her racing career was ended by injury. She made no impact as a broodmare.
Keysoe (1916–1929) was a British Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. Bred and owned by the 17th Earl of Derby she was the product of a mating between two St Leger winners and won the race herself in 1919. She was unraced as a juvenile but developed into a top-class stayer at three,winning the Gratwicke Stakes and the Nassau Stakes at Goodwood Racecourse before taking the St Leger and later winning the Newmarket Oaks. She failed to win as a four-year-old in 1920 although she was placed in all of her races. After her retirement from racing,she had considerable success as a broodmare despite producing very few foals.
Logician is a British Thoroughbred racehorse. He was unraced as a two-year-old in 2018 but in the following year he established himself as a top-class performer as he won all five of his races including the Great Voltigeur Stakes and the St Leger Stakes. He recovered from a life-threatening bout of peritonitis in December 2019 and won one minor race before sustaining his first defeat in the Cumberland Lodge Stakes.
