Radio City Music Hall of the Air was a weekly American radio program broadcast on the NBC Blue Network from 1932 through 1942 that featured a range of classical music programming extending from symphonies and other kinds of orchestral works to operas, oratorios, chamber music, choral works and other kinds of classical music literature. The program was usually broadcast live on Sunday afternoons at noon from Radio City Music Hall (RCMH) in front of a live audience in the theatre. Broadcasts featured the RCMH symphony orchestra under conductor Ernö Rapée. The program was typically an hour long, although occasionally the program's running time would be extended to a lengthier time block if they were performing a complete masterwork such as an opera.
From 1932 through 1942 the hour-long Radio City Music Hall of the Air radio program was broadcast on the NBC Blue Network. [1] [2] The program was usually broadcast live on Sunday afternoons at noon from Radio City Music Hall (RCMH) in programs featuring the RCMH symphony orchestra under conductor Ernö Rapée, but with occasional time deviations to later starting time like 12:15 or 12:30 in the afternoon. [2] Rapée was director of the program from its inception in December 1932 until the program ceased broadcasting in the autumn of 1942. [3]
The Radio City Music Hall of the Air program was one of the more prominent "radio symphony series" programs of its era. [4] It was dedicated to performing classical music masterworks, and featured a wide range of literature from symphonies, concerti, and other orchestral literature to operas, oratorios, chamber works, and choral music. [5] The program was noted not only for programming music by standard European composers like Mozart, Beethoven, Brahms, Stravinsky, and Prokofiev, but also featuring American composers at a time when American-made classical music was just beginning to find its foothold in the national and international concert stage. Some American composers who were featured on the program included Aaron Copland, George Gershwin, Roy Harris, and Edgar Stillman Kelley. [5] In 1938 the program was the recipient of a Medal of Merit award from Radio Guide magazine for excellence in radio programming. [6]
In 1937 the program drew particular acclaim for its ambitious programming of the complete cycle of Jean Sibelius's seven symphonies. [2] On October 8, 1939, the program presented the world premiere of Eugene Zador's opera Christopher Columbus ; a work written by its Jewish composer while fleeing persecution from Nazi Germany by sailing across the Atlantic. [7] On December 3, 1939, the program featured the United States premiere of Erich Ziesel's "Little Symphony"; a work whose four movements were each based on a different painting by the Austrian artist Roswitha Bitterlich. [8]
In 1940 The New York Times described the program as the "oldest and longest sustained [program] of its kind in radio"; highlighting the fact the program had employed approximately 10,000 musicians and featured a wide range of top soloists, including sopranos Kirsten Flagstad and Viola Philo; contraltos Edwina Eustis Dick and Bruna Castagna; baritones John Charles Thomas and Robert Weede; violinists Mischa Elman, Jascha Heifetz, and Ossy Renardy; and pianists Josef Hofmann, José Iturbi and Henrietta Schumann. [5] RCMH impresario Samuel Roxy was credited with discovering the American tenor Jan Peerce who became a regular performer on the program from its earliest broadcasts in 1932. [9] [10] The program also regularly featured the Stradivarius Quartet of New York; [2] an ensemble founded by the violinist Alfred Pochon whose members also included violinist Wolfe Wolfinsohn, violist Nicolas Moldavan, and cellist Gerald Warburg. Also of note were the opportunities afforded to some African-American performers who were at that time barred from the opera stage due to racial prejudice. For example, bass-baritone Lawrence Winters performed in six broadcasts on the program during his early singing career. [11]
In Rapée's 1945 obituary in The New York Times the paper stated that the pinnacle of his artistic success as a conductor was achieved on the occasion of the 500th broadcast of Radio City Music Hall of the Air program on April 12, 1942, with a masterful performance of Gustav Mahler's Symphony No. 8 . [3] This performance employed 400 performers; including a chorus of 300 voices. [12]
Leonard Bernstein was an American conductor, composer, pianist, music educator, author, and humanitarian. Considered to be one of the most important conductors of his time, he was the first American-born conductor to receive international acclaim. Bernstein was "one of the most prodigiously talented and successful musicians in American history" according to music critic Donal Henahan. Bernstein's honors and accolades include seven Emmy Awards, two Tony Awards, and 16 Grammy Awards as well as an Academy Award nomination. He received the Kennedy Center Honor in 1981.
The New York Philharmonic is an American symphony orchestra based in New York City. Known officially as the Philharmonic-Symphony Society of New York, Inc., and globally known as the New York Philharmonic Orchestra (NYPO) or the New York Philharmonic-Symphony Orchestra, it is one of the leading American orchestras popularly called the "Big Five". The Philharmonic's home is David Geffen Hall, at New York's Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts.
The San Francisco Symphony, founded in 1911, is an American orchestra based in San Francisco, California. Since 1980 the orchestra has been resident at the Louise M. Davies Symphony Hall in the city's Hayes Valley neighborhood. The San Francisco Symphony Youth Orchestra and the San Francisco Symphony Chorus (1972) are part of the organization. Michael Tilson Thomas became the orchestra's music director in 1995, and concluded his tenure in 2020 when Esa-Pekka Salonen took over the position.
The Columbia Symphony Orchestra was an orchestra formed by Columbia Records for the purpose of making recordings. In the 1950s, it provided a vehicle for some of Columbia's better known conductors and recording artists to record using only company resources. The musicians in the orchestra were contracted as needed for individual sessions and consisted of free-lance artists and often members of either the New York Philharmonic or the Los Angeles Philharmonic, depending on whether the recording was being made in Columbia's East Coast or West Coast studios.
The Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra (PSO) is an American orchestra based in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The orchestra is resident at Heinz Hall, located in Pittsburgh's Cultural District. He also published books and essays on musical matters.
The Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra is an American symphony orchestra located in Buffalo, New York led by Music Director JoAnn Falletta. Its primary performing venue is Kleinhans Music Hall, which is a National Historic Landmark. Each season it presents over 120 classical series, pops, rock, youth, and family concerts. During the summer months, the orchestra performs at parks and outdoor venues across Western New York.

In Canada, classical music includes a range of musical styles rooted in the traditions of Western or European classical music that European settlers brought to the country from the 17th century and onwards. As well, it includes musical styles brought by other ethnic communities from the 19th century and onwards, such as Indian classical music and Chinese classical music. Since Canada's emergence as a nation in 1867, the country has produced its own composers, musicians and ensembles. As well, it has developed a music infrastructure that includes training institutions, conservatories, performance halls, and a public radio broadcaster, CBC, which programs a moderate amount of Classical music. There is a high level of public interest in classical music and education.
The Adelaide Symphony Orchestra (ASO) is a South Australian orchestra based in Adelaide, established in 1936. The orchestra's primary performance venue is the Adelaide Town Hall, but the ASO also performs in other venues. It provides the orchestral support for all productions of the State Opera of South Australia and all Adelaide performances of the Australian Ballet. It also features regularly at the Adelaide Festival, and has performed at the Adelaide Cabaret Festival, WOMAdelaide and several other festivals in Adelaide.
Walter Johannes Damrosch was a Prussian-born American conductor and composer. He was the director of the New York Symphony Orchestra and conducted the world premiere performances of various works, including Aaron Copland's Symphony for Organ and Orchestra, George Gershwin's Piano Concerto in F and An American in Paris, and Jean Sibelius' Tapiola. Damrosch was also instrumental in the founding of Carnegie Hall. He also conducted the first performance of Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No. 3 with the composer himself as soloist.

His most famous tenure was as the head conductor of the Radio City Symphony Orchestra, the resident orchestra of the Radio City Music Hall, whose music was also heard by millions over the air on the radio program Radio City Music Hall of the Air.

General Motors Concerts, offering classical music on the radio, were heard in different formats on the NBC Red and NBC Blue networks between 1929 and 1937. The concerts began 1929-31 as a 30-minute series on the Red Network with Frank Black as the musical conductor on Mondays at 9:30pm. It also aired as General Motors Family Party.
Charles Previn was an American film composer who was active at Universal in Hollywood during the 1940s and 1950s. Before being based in Hollywood, Previn arranged music for over 100 Broadway productions.
Martha Lipton was an American operatic mezzo-soprano and music educator who is best known for her career performing at the Metropolitan Opera from 1944-1961. A native of New York City, she began her training as a vocalist with her mother who had a brief career as a concert soprano under the name Estelle Laiken. She later studied both privately and at the School of Musicianship for Singers, Inc and the Juilliard School. She made her professional concert debut while still a student in 1933 at Carnegie Hall, performing in a concert of light opera excerpts with the New York Light Opera Guild. In 1936 she began working as a church vocalist at both Riverside Church and Temple Emanu-El of New York.
Josepha Chekova, sometimes given as Josefa Chekova and also known by her married name Josepha Domansky, was a Czech-American soprano. She began her career in vaudeville as early as 1924, and was a contracted singer with WRNY radio in 1926–1927. After appearing in a musical revue in Chicago, she won a vocal competition in 1927 which provided her with a scholarship to train as an opera singer at the Bel Canto Studio, Inc. of New York. She later studied singing further in New York City with Estelle Liebling. She made her opera debut at the Prague State Opera prior to becoming a leading soprano with the New York Opera Company in 1933. She was a leading soprano at Radio City Music Hall in 1930s, and toured with the San Carlo Opera Company in 1935–1936. She worked regularly with the Steel Pier Opera Company in Atlantic City from the mid 1930s into the early 1940s, and also appeared as a guest artist with opera companies in Washington D.C., Cincinnati, and Chicago. From 1940 to 1942 she toured with Armand Bagarozy's Columbia Opera Company, and in 1948 she gave a concert tour of Czechoslovakia.
Christopher Columbus is an opera in one act by composer Eugene Zador with a German-language libretto by Archduke Joseph Francis of Austria. Zador, a Hungarian Jew, wrote the opera while voyaging across the Atlantic Ocean in 1939 to flee persecution from Nazi Germany. The work depicts the first voyage of Christopher Columbus to America in 1492. Soprano Josepha Chekova wrote an English-language translation to the work for its world premiere on October 8, 1939. Her translation has been used several times for performances of the work in the United States, including on a recording made by the American Symphony Orchestra in 1975. The opera is approximately one hour in length.
