Ralph Chapman (born February 5,1951) is a former Green member of the Maine House of Representatives. He represented the 133rd district,which covers parts of Hancock County. Originally elected as a Democrat,he later became an independent and finally a Green under the Maine Green Independent Party since September 22,2017.
Chapman graduated from Tufts University in 1973. He worked as the principal and technical director of LEO Engineering from 1987 until 1993 and was consultant and owner of Ralph Chapman Consulting from 2000 until 2003. Beginning in 2003,he served as coordinator and instructor of United Technologies Center. [1]
Chapman was first elected to the House in 2010,and reelected in 2012,2014,and 2016. On May 26,2017,Chapman,along with fellow representative Denise Harlow,unenrolled from the Democratic Party and became an independent. [2] [3] Both were speculated to have unenrolled due to their opposition to a bill which would allow open-pit mining in the state of Maine. [4] On September 22,2017,Chapman became a member of the Maine Green Independent Party. [5] [6] He is the first Green Party legislator in Maine since John Eder,who served from 2003 until 2007 and the first Green Party state legislator in the country since Fred Smith of Arkansas,who was elected as a Green but became a Democrat in 2014. Chapman was term-limited in 2018 and left office in January 2019.

For the 2016 United States presidential election,Chapman endorsed Bernie Sanders. [8] He also is an advocate of environmental issues. [9]

The Green Party of the United States (GPUS) is a federation of Green state political parties in the United States. The party promotes green politics,specifically environmentalism;nonviolence;social justice;participatory democracy;grassroots democracy;anti-war;anti-racism;eco-socialism. On the political spectrum,the party is generally seen as left-wing. As of 2023,it is the fourth-largest political party in the United States by voter registration,behind the Libertarian Party.
Bernard Sanders is an American politician and activist who is the senior United States senator from Vermont. Sanders is the longest-serving independent in U.S. congressional history but has a close relationship with the Democratic Party,having caucused with House and Senate Democrats for most of his congressional career and sought the party's presidential nomination in 2016 and 2020,coming second in both campaigns. He is often seen as a leader of the U.S. progressive movement.
The Maine House of Representatives is the lower house of the Maine Legislature. The House consists of 151 voting members and three nonvoting members. The voting members represent an equal number of districts across the state and are elected via plurality voting. The nonvoting members represent three of Maine's Native American tribes,though two tribes have declined to send representatives. Each voting member of the House represents around 9,000 citizens of the state. Because it is a part-time position,members of the Maine House of Representatives usually have outside employment as well. Members are limited to four consecutive terms of two years each,but may run again after two years.
John Eder is an American activist and politician from Maine. Eder,a Republican,lives in Waterboro. He is a former member of the Maine Green Independent Party and the Maine Democratic Party. He served in the Maine House of Representatives as the legislature's first member of the Green Party for two terms and was elected in 2002 and re-elected in 2004. Until his defeat in 2006 Eder was one of only a handful of independent or third party state legislators in the country and was the highest-ranking elected Green official in the United States. Eder ran for Mayor of Portland,Maine in 2011. In 2014,Eder won a race for an at-large seat on the Portland Board of Education.
The Maine Green Independent Party is a state-level political party affiliated with the Green Party of the United States. It is the oldest state green party in the United States. It was founded following an informal meeting of 17 environmental advocates,including Bowdoin College professor John Rensenbrink and others in Augusta,Maine in January 1984. From 1994 to 2006,the party's gubernatorial nominees received between 6% and 10% of the vote.

In the 2016 presidential campaign,Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders sought the Democratic Party's nomination in a field of six major candidates and was the runner up with 46% of the pledged delegates behind former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton,who won the contest with 54%. Sanders,the junior United States senator and former Representative from Vermont,began with an informal announcement on April 30,2015,and a formal announcement that he planned to seek the Democratic Party's nomination for President of the United States on May 26,2015,in Burlington,Vermont. Sanders had been considered a potential candidate for president since at least September 2014. Though he had previously run as an independent,he routinely caucused with the Democratic Party,as many of his views align with Democrats. Running as a Democrat made it easier to participate in debates and get his name on state ballots.

Maine has four electoral votes in the Electoral College. Unlike all other states except Nebraska,Maine awards two electoral votes based on the statewide vote,and one vote for each congressional district. The last time it did so was in 1828.

The incumbent senator,Democrat Patrick Leahy,announced on November 15,2021,that he would not seek re-election to a ninth term,leaving the seat open for the first time since 1974.
The 2018 United States House of Representatives elections in Iowa were held on November 6,2018,to elect the four U.S. representatives from the State of Iowa,one from each of the state's four congressional districts. The 2020 Maine Democratic presidential primary took place on March 3,2020,as one of 15 contests scheduled on Super Tuesday in the Democratic Party primaries for the 2020 presidential election,following the South Carolina primary the weekend before. The Maine primary,the first in the state since 2000,was a closed primary,meaning that only registered Democrats could vote in this primary,but unenrolled voters were permitted to enroll in a party at the polls with same day registration. The state awarded 32 delegates towards the 2020 Democratic National Convention,24 of which were pledged delegates allocated based on the results of the primary. The primary election coincided with a people's veto referendum to reject changes to Maine's vaccination laws.
