Randy Simms is a former politician and radio host. He was mayor of Mount Pearl, Newfoundland and Labrador from 2007 to 2017. Simms was also host of Open Line, a call-in radio talk show that airs weekday mornings on the VOCM/CFCB radio network, and a political commentator for The Telegram and CBC News.

Municipal politics

Simms became mayor of Mount Pearl in 2007, when the previous mayor, Steve Kent stepped down to represent the district of Mount Pearl North in the House of Assembly. [1] He was re-elected by acclaimation in the 2009 [1] and 2013 elections. [2] [3] Simms announced in May 2017 announced that he will not seek another term in the 2017 election. [4]

Provincial politics

Simms' first foray into provincial politics was in the 1993 provincial election, representing the Progressive Conservative Party in the electoral district of Harbour Main. [5] He came in second to Don Whelan, receiving 3141 votes to Whelan's 3310. [6]

In 2014, Simms joined the Liberal Office of the Official Opposition as an advisor. [7] Following the Liberals forming government in the 2015 election, Simms was appointed as a researcher in the government members' office until being laid-off in 2017. [8]

In 2015, Simms announced he would seek the Liberal Party nomination in the district of Mount Pearl North. [9] He was subsequently acclaimed as the party's candidate for the 2015 provincial election. [10] On November 30, 2015, Simms was defeated by Progressive Conservative incumbent Steve Kent. [11] [12]

Kevin George O'Brien MHA, is a Canadian businessman, pharmacist and politician in Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. He served as the province's Minister of Advanced Education and Skills. O'Brien was elected to the Newfoundland and Labrador House of Assembly as a member of the Progressive Conservative Party (PC) in 2003, representing the district of Gander until his resignation in 2015. He resigned his provincial seat on July 3, 2015 to run federally in the 2015 federal election.

The Liberal Party of Newfoundland and Labrador leadership election, August 2011 was prompted by Yvonne Jones' announcement that she would be stepping down as Liberal leader, once her successor was chosen, due to health reasons. Her announcement came 62 days before the October 2011 provincial election.

The Liberal Party of Newfoundland and Labrador leadership election of 2013 was triggered by Kevin Aylward's announcement on October 26, 2011, that he would resign as leader following the party's result in the 2011 provincial election. It was announced on December 15, 2011, that Humber Valley MHA Dwight Ball would start serving as interim leader of the party on January 3, 2012. In May 2012, the party announced the leadership convention would take place between November 15–17, 2013. It was won by Dwight Ball, who had stepped down as interim leader in July 2013 to run.

The Progressive Conservative Party which had governed since 2003 election, was defeated by the Liberal Party, which won a majority in the new assembly.

2019 Newfoundland and Labrador general election

The 2019 Newfoundland and Labrador general election was held on May 16, 2019, to elect members of the 49th General Assembly of Newfoundland and Labrador.

The Progressive Conservative Party of Newfoundland and Labrador leadership election, 2018 was held on April 27–29, 2018, to select a successor to Paul Davis who announced on October 11, 2016, that he planned to step down as leader once his replacement was elected. St. John's lawyer Ches Crosbie defeated former Health Authority CEO Tony Wakeham to become the new leader. 11,000 members joined the party during this leadership election, of which, just over 4,000 cast their ballots.

Jim Lester is a Canadian politician who served as the Newfoundland and Labrador Member of the House of Assembly for Mount Pearl North from 2017 to 2021.

2021 Newfoundland and Labrador general election Election in Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada

The 2021 Newfoundland and Labrador general election was held on March 25, 2021, to elect members of the 50th General Assembly of Newfoundland and Labrador.

A by-election was held in the federal riding of Bonavista—Burin—Trinity in Newfoundland and Labrador on December 11, 2017 following the resignation of Liberal MP Judy Foote. The seat was held for the Liberals by Churence Rogers.

Lucy S. Stoyles is a Canadian politician, who was elected to the Newfoundland and Labrador House of Assembly in the 2021 provincial election. She represents the electoral district of Mount Pearl North as a member of the Liberal Party of Newfoundland and Labrador.
