The politics of Guyana takes place in a framework of a representative democratic assembly-independent republic,whereby the President of Guyana is the head of government and of a multi-party system. Executive power is exercised by the President,advised by a cabinet. Legislative power is vested in both the President and the National Assembly of Guyana. The judiciary is independent of the executive and the legislature.
The history of Guyana begins about 35,000 years ago with the arrival of humans coming from Eurasia. These migrants became the Carib and Arawak tribes,who met Alonso de Ojeda's first expedition from Spain in 1499 at the Essequibo River. In the ensuing colonial era,Guyana's government was defined by the successive policies of Spanish,French,Dutch,and British settlers.
British Guiana was a British colony,part of the mainland British West Indies,which resides on the northern coast of South America. Since 1966 it has been known as the independent nation of Guyana.
Cheddi Berret Jagan was a Guyanese politician and dentist who was first elected Chief Minister in 1953 and later Premier of British Guiana from 1961 to 1964. She previously served as the first female Prime Minister of Guyana from March 17,1997,to December 19,1997. The wife of Cheddi Jagan,whom she succeeded as president,she was awarded Guyana's highest national award,the Order of Excellence,in 1993,and the UNESCO Mahatma Gandhi Gold Medal for Women's Rights in 1998.
Linden Forbes Sampson Burnham was a Guyanese politician and the leader of the Co-operative Republic of Guyana from 1964 until his death in 1985. He served as Premier of British Guiana from 1964 to 1966,Prime Minister of Guyana from 1964 to 1980 and then as the first Executive President of Guyana from 1980 to 1985. He is often regarded as a strongman who embraced his own version of socialism.

The People's Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) is a democratic socialist,left-wing populist political party in Guyana. As of 2020,the party holds 33 of the 65 seats in the National Assembly and forms the government. It has been the ruling party in the past as well,most recently between 1992 and 2015. In Guyana's ethnically divided political landscape,the PPP/C is a multi-ethnic organization that is supported primarily by Indo-Guyanese people.

Martin Wylde Carter was a Guyanese poet and political activist. Widely regarded as the greatest Guyanese poet,and one of the most important poets of the Caribbean region,Carter is best known for his poems of protest,resistance and revolution. He played an active role in Guyanese politics,particularly in the years leading up Independence in 1966 and those immediately following. He was famously imprisoned by the British government in Guyana in October 1953 under allegations of "spreading dissension",and again in June 1954 for taking part in a People's Progressive Party (PPP) procession. Shortly after being released from prison the first time,he published his best-known poetry collection,Poems of Resistance from British Guiana (1954).
The Progressive Youth Organisation of Guyana is a youth organisation in Guyana,the youth wing of the People's Progressive Party. The membership of Progressive Youth Organisation (PYO) is predominantly Indo-Guyanese,like its mother party.
Balram Singh Rai was a Guyanese politician. He served as Minister of Community Development and Education from 1959 to 1961,then the first Minister of Home Affairs from 1961 to 1962.
Winifred Gaskin,CCH,OD was an Afro-Guyanese educator,journalist and civil servant who entered politics. After a career in public service,she was appointed as the first high commissioner of Guyana to the Commonwealth Caribbean Countries organization. Her dedication to public service was honored with the Jamaican Order of Distinction and the Cacique's Crown of Honour,Guyana's second highest service award.
Socialism has been mentioned in several liberal democratic constitutions. It is referenced either in the form of denunciation or in form of construction,namely that the state in question seeks to establish a socialist society. In these cases,the intended meaning of the term socialism can vary widely and sometimes the constitutional references to socialism are left over from a previous period in the country's history.
Bishwaishwar 'Cammie' Ramsaroop was a Guyanese politician from People's National Congress. Prior to his political career,he was a teacher and minister in the Forbes Burnham administration. From October 1980 to September 1984 he was one of the Vice Presidents. Ramsaroop played a pivotal role in the establishment of Trinidad and Tobago's first diplomatic mission with the creation of the Guyana High Commission on Alexandra Street,Port-of-Spain in February 2020.
Asgar Ally is a former Guyanese politician. He served as Minister of Finance from 1992 to 1995.
William Arthur Watkin Strachan was a leading British communist,pioneer of black civil rights in Britain,human rights and anti-colonial activist,charity worker,newspaper editor,and British legal expert. He is most noted for his wartime achievements as a bomber pilot with the Royal Air Force (RAF) during the Second World War,and for his reputation as a highly influential figure within Britain's black communities.
Caribbean News (1952–1956) was a Black British newspaper,notable for being one of the first Black British newspapers in the United Kingdom. Caribbean News was founded and published by the London branch of the Caribbean Labour Congress under the guidance of Black British civil rights leader and communist activist Billy Strachan,and existed between 1952 and 1956.
