Ranjitsinh Disale is an Indian teacher from Maharashtra. He is the winner of $1 million annual Global Teacher Prize 2020 which was announced on 3 December 2020. [1] The Global Teacher Prize, which has been referred to by journalists as the Nobel Prize for teaching, highlights and celebrates the profession while giving greater recognition to the work of teachers all over the world. Disale said in his winning speech that he would share with his nine fellow finalists half of the prize money, meaning they would receive $55,000 each. [2] [3] He also works with the World Bank as Advisor for their educational programs. [4] [5] He was selected by the US Government to join Fulbright Program. [6] [7]

Early life and education

Disale hails from Paritewadi Village in the Solapur District of Maharashtra. At the beginning, he decided to be an IT engineer and had enrolled in an engineering college. But when things didn't fit for him, his father convinced him to take up the teacher's training programme. While Disale was initially reluctant about the decision, his time at the college of teacher training made him realize that the real change-makers in the world are the teachers. [8]

Career

Disale is well known for his innovative teaching works, including demonstrating scientific experiments from the science lab built by him and adding QR codes to primary category books so that his students can get links to audio poems, video lectures, assignments and stories. His idea of incorporating QR codes into textbooks was adopted by National Council of Educational Research and Training. [8] [9]

In his village, he also campaigned to eliminate adolescent marriages and encourage the education of girls. [8]

He submitted his resignation letter in July 2022 to join Fulbright Program in USA. The Education Ministry approved study leave and allowed him to participate in the program without resignation. [10] Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and Deputy Minister Devendra Fadnavis assured him that Maharashtra government will support him. [11] [12]

Although a parliamentary democracy, Indian politics has increasing become dynastic, possibly due to the absence of a party organization, independent civil society associations that mobilize support for the party, and centralized financing of elections. Family members have also led the Congress party for most of the period since 1978 when Indira Gandhi floated the then Congress(I) faction of the party. It also is fairly common in many political parties in Maharashtra. The dynastic phenomenon is seen from national level down to district level and even village level.The three-tier structure of Panchayati Raj created in the 1960s also helped to create and consolidate this phenomenon in rural areas. Apart from government,political families also control cooperative institutions, mainly cooperative sugar factories, district cooperative banks in the state, and since the 1980s private for profit colleges. The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party also features several senior leaders who are dynasts. In Maharashtra, the NCP has particularly high level of dynasticism.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Second Fadnavis ministry</span>

Devendra Fadnavis was sworn in as the chief minister of Maharashtra for the second time on 23 November 2019. Alongside Fadnavis, Ajit Pawar was sworn in as the deputy chief minister. Before a Supreme Court-ordered no confidence motion could take place, Pawar resigned on 26 November. Fadnavis resigned shortly thereafter, making his second ministry the shortest Maharashtra ministry, surpassing P. K. Sawant's 1963 interim government, that had lasted for nine days.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Maha Vikas Aghadi</span> Indian political alliance

The Maha Vikas Aghadi or Maharashtra Vikas Aghadi, abbreviated as MVA, is a state-level political coalition formed after the 2019 Maharashtra Legislative Assembly election under the leadership of Uddhav Thackeray of Shiv Sena, Sharad Pawar of the NCP and Sonia Gandhi of the INC, along with the support from the Samajwadi Party, PWPI, Prahar Janshakti Party, CPI(M) and several other political parties including Independent MLAs. MVA is currently the largest alliance in Maharashtra Legislative Council, and also the official opposition in Maharashtra Legislative Assembly.

The 2022 Maharashtra political crisis began on 21 June 2022 in the Indian state of Maharashtra when Eknath Shinde, along with several other MLAs of the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) coalition moved to Surat in the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-governed Gujarat, throwing the coalition into a crisis. The group later moved to Guwahati in another BJP-governed state, Assam. Shiv Sena leader Sanjay Raut accused BJP of causing the revolt within Shiv Sena and attempting to topple the MVA-coalition government, implicitly mentioned later in a remark by BJP's Sushil Modi. Eknath Shinde led a revolt against Uddhav Thackeray because he disagreed with Thackeray's decision not to end the alliance with Maha Vikas Aaghadi, despite requests from two-thirds of elected Shiv Sena members. Shinde's faction ultimately succeeded in taking control of the party and forming a new government in Maharashtra with the support of the BJP. On 29 June, Uddhav Thackeray, Chief Minister of Maharashtra, resigned from the post as well as a MLC member while speaking live on social media ahead of a no-confidence motion on 29 June 2022. The resignation of Thackeray saw the cancellation of the floor test, with Shinde taking stake of the government as the Chief Minister and Devendra Fadnavis as the Deputy Chief Minister on 30 June.
