Ravi S. Rajan is an American artist and academic administrator working as the fourth president of the California Institute of the Arts.
The son of immigrants from India,Rajan was born in Seattle and raised in Norman,Oklahoma. His father,a physicist working for the Atomic Energy Establishment in Mumbai,quit his job and came to the U.S. to study atmospheric sciences at Colorado State University then the University of Washington,eventually bringing his wife and eldest daughter. His mother,who was initially not allowed to finish High School,stayed in Mumbai taking care of their two daughters,the younger of which became quite ill and died. After her death,she brought her daughter to Colorado to once again have the family live together. She then worked to support the family,and eventually taught herself to become a computer programmer for the City of Norman and the State of Oklahoma before retiring. Rajan attended the Norman Public Schools and graduated from Norman High,then earned a Bachelor’s degree in music education from the University of Oklahoma and a Master’s in Music from Yale University. Rajan began his career as a music teacher in the Norman Public Schools. After graduating from Yale,Rajan moved to New York City,where he worked as a designer for Rockefeller University,performed in Broadway shows,and offered private trumpet lessons. [2]
As a trumpet player,Rajan has performed in various musical ensembles in large orchestral,big band,and chamber settings,as well as for theatre on and off Broadway. He was a member of the Tony Awards Nominating Committee. [3]
Rajan was previously dean of the school of the arts,and before that,director of Art+Design and associate dean of the arts at State University of New York at Purchase. [4]
As a producer and designer of large-scale projects and installations,he has worked in major museums,biennials,theaters,festivals,galleries,and venues around the world,for artists including Alfredo Jaar,Stephen Petronio,and Laura Poitras.
In 2010,Rajan was elected a fellow of the Royal Society of Arts. As the fourth president of CalArts,Rajan succeeded Steven Lavine,who served as president for 29 years. [5]
Rajan is and has been a volunteer leader for many causes that support the arts,education,and social justice including Americans for the Arts;Asian American Arts Alliance;American Brass Chamber Music Association (ABQ);the National Association of Independent Colleges and Universities;the Association of Independent California Colleges and Universities;the Association of Independent Colleges of Art and Design;the National Association of Schools of Art and Design;the American Theater Wing;and Yale University.
Ravi Shankar was an Indian sitarist and composer. A sitar virtuoso,he became the world's best-known expert of North Indian classical music in the second half of the 20th century,and influenced many musicians in India and throughout the world. Shankar was awarded India's highest civilian honour,the Bharat Ratna,in 1999. He is also the father of American singer Norah Jones.

It was incorporated in 1961 as the first degree-granting institution of higher learning in the US created specifically for students of both the visual and performing arts. The University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma (USAO) is a public liberal arts college in Chickasha,Oklahoma. It is the only public college in Oklahoma with a strictly liberal arts–focused curriculum and is a member of the Council of Public Liberal Arts Colleges. USAO is an undergraduate-only institution and grants bachelor's degrees in a variety of subject areas. The school was founded in 1908 as a school for women and from 1912 to 1965 was known as Oklahoma College for Women. It became coeducational in 1965 and today educates approximately 800 students. George Mesrop Avakian was an American record producer,artist manager,writer,educator and executive. Best known for his work from 1939 to the early 1960s at Decca Records,Columbia Records,World Pacific Records,Warner Bros. Records,and RCA Records,he was a major force in the expansion and development of the U.S. recording industry. Norman High School is a four-year public high school in Norman,Oklahoma,with a steady enrollment of approximately 2,000 students. It is accredited by North Central Association,the Oklahoma State Department of Education and the Oklahoma Secondary School Activities Association. The school year consists of two 15-week semesters with a 6 class flexible schedule,consisting of 52 minute periods. He was the author of numerous books and articles principally regarding the fields of speech–language pathology,music education,and the psychology of music and art. He served as Dean of the Graduate College of University of Iowa from 1908–1937. He is most commonly associated with the development of the Seashore Tests of Musical Ability.
Peter Salovey is an American social psychologist and former academic administrator. He served as the 23rd president of Yale University from 2013 to 2024. He previously served as provost of Yale University from 2008 to 2013,dean of Yale College from 2004 to 2008,and dean of Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences from 2003 to 2004. Salovey is one of the early pioneers in emotional intelligence.
The Herb Alpert Award in the Arts was established in the 1994 by The Herb Alpert Foundation in collaboration with the California Institute of the Arts. The Herb Alpert Foundation,which included then-present Kip Cohen,and benefactors Herbert and Lani Alpert,approached then-CalArts president Steven Lavine with the proposition of providing young artists studying at the institute opportunities to engage with current American artists. This would be a forum to provide them with the best possible professional training. CalArts previously established a relationship with Herb Alpert from his support of the jazz program at the School of Music.

The Tulsa Youth Symphony Orchestra (TYS) is an Oklahoma nonprofit arts organization founded in 1963 to provide advanced orchestral training and performance experience for young musicians in Northeastern Oklahoma. As of 2016,more than 200 students,ages 8 to 18,participate in the program’s two orchestras. The orchestra is composed of students from northeast Oklahoma communities and schools including Tulsa,Bartlesville,Owasso,Sapulpa,Sand Springs,Broken Arrow,Bixby,Coweta,Grove,Oologah,Jenks,and Holland Hall,as well as home schooled children.
Anna Lewis (1885–1961) was a noted teacher,historian and writer,who specialized in American history,and particularly the history of the Southwest. Born in what was then Indian Territory to a family of mixed Choctaw and European ancestry,she earned doctoral degrees from University of California,Berkeley (1915) and University of Oklahoma (1930). She was the first woman to receive a Ph. D. at the University of Oklahoma. Lewis spent her educational career at the Oklahoma College for Women. She wrote two books and numerous articles for publications in her area of interest before retiring in 1956 to a home she had built in southern Oklahoma. She died in 1961.
Steven D. Lavine is an American academic administrator who was the president of the California Institute of the Arts. He stepped down from that position in June 2017,after 29 years in the post.
